When I go to the trouble of removing a sub frame, any sub frame, I spend that bit of extra time to remove surface rust, flaking paint and give it a coat of red oxide, and whatever hammerite I happen to have in stock.
@PetrolHeadRebuilds3 ай бұрын
+@stukyu I really wanted to do that, but time was against me on this one. I also had a lot of stuff packed ready for the house move.

Agreed. Once you’ve had a Mini in perfectly good mechanical condition fail it’s test because of excessive front subframe corrosion, you get a bit paranoid about this. Just had mine up on ramps and given it the full wire brush + rust converter + Hammerite + Waxoyl treatment 😂😂

Well a polybush kit could have been a choice . I would advise never using dish soap (especially fairy) as there are a number of unsuitable ingredients including a lot of salt ! Silicon spray is much friendlier . Every credit to you for saving a perfectly useable run about from the breakers and a useful vid for anyone tackling this job on a budget . Congrats and hope your view count continues upward 👍

I parked my 1975 Land Rover by a Mini the other day. The Mini was not so mini, being longer and wider than my Series 3 Land Rover 😂. Wow, new minis look so simple to work on. Not like the original ones which were so terribly overcomplicated and blew their own engines up at 60k 😂🤣😂. As others have suggested, poly bushes would have been the best way to go. They are just a slightly better material than the cheapy rubber ones you got, which are possibly made India anyway. Also there is no point in changing parts which don't need changing. They may already have been done recently and just look a bit old. Good luck in your new garage 👍

It's Mini's like this that I want to save from just being scrapped or broken for parts. Not so much about profits but more to keep them on the road. It looks like they are in the 90's dip of the classic Mini and rather than seeing them drop off the roads, I want to keep them on and loved. Electric blue too, great colour! If you need to remove the radiator at all (i.e. replace the shroud), check and test the low speed fan first. The resistor fails and the replacement needs the shroud off ideally.

I did mine too. Never touched the subframe though! Removed the wishbone and used a reciprocating saw to cut through the old rubber bushing. Replaced with a polybush and compressed it in using a special tool freely available on a major auction site. Bit fiddly to line up and compress but was doable.

They are mounted to the body. Just tied to the subframe to avoid torsional movement. So the subframe can be removed without having to support the engine.

Is possible to change arms without dropping subfame completely. Drop subframe a few inches enough to remove the long bolts .
@PetrolHeadRebuilds3 ай бұрын
I have seen some videos where you can drop the back to give access to do it but the bolts are very tight so it would depend on the access and the ability to get the bolts out. There is also the option to replace the bushes after doing that but you would need more tools to make it possible. I honestly think the cleanest way is to drop the subframe.

They look like a masterpiece of misguided engineering, from a maintenance point of view. An old aircraft engineer told me that the designers of these things should be made to strip and re-assemble their designs before every meal. That way you either get some really service friendly designs, or some very hungry engineers!

That would have been an ideal situation but the subframe was only slightly affected by surface rust so balancing out the time I had to get the work done versus completely revamping the subframe, I chose to get the job done. Very easy to find fault in what was ultimately a video showing how to fix an issue and keep a car on the road.

Missing your apprentice... Have you got an "ugger dugger" power impact driver and sockets? What about the other MOT advisories? When comparing with WBAC offers don't forget their admin/transaction "fees" which reduce the effective offer value. Remarkably rust free Mini - approaching classic car status - but it's had it's share of MOT defects over the years.

He has been busy with the house move and is now obssessed with the N64 I dug out from the loft.
