The fungus in that franchise is actually a fictional species of this exact genus of fungus: cordyceps. So it’s exactly the same thing. There are hundreds of species of them in real life and each tends to target a single animal species to infect, but it’s usually invertebrates

Yeah luckily such fungus is many steps of evolution away from being compatible with our body heat. There are some fungi that can infect us, and those cases it spreads through the lungs and is basically impossible to get out; but all it does is clog us up, it doesn't zombify us like it can with small insects. We just got too many compartments and antibodies

@@Real69406luckily it doesn’t work on humans. Only on certain ant species and certain moths. Plus the fungus lives in deep, brushy, jungles far away from most human settlements/cities. And even if you did find a insect infected with it, it can’t harm you, or spread onto you in any way. It would mind its own business, looking for a more insect populated region, to spread its spore to. They’re not interested in traumatizing a human, accidentally.

Pin this if you want: If any of y’all didn’t already know, this fungus is known as Cordyceps. Yes, THAT Cordyceps. Anyways, another example of Cordyceps in insects is when an ant is affected. It looses brain control and leaves the colony to perch on a branch. After a sort incubation time, the fungus sprouts from the head and thorax spreading the spores. Usually the ant has died due to starvation before hand.

It's so scary that this fungus not only takes over the body of the insect, but then moved that insect to a high place to then be overgrown like this so that the speed will reach as many new insects as possible. 😬 😳

To my knowledge this kind of parasite is too weak to do anything to mammals let alone humans. And even if it could it would just pilot your body to the nearest tree to produce spores instead of running around. Rabies on the other hand is much closer to a zombie infection imo. There is no cure it causes you to bite people and it spreads through bodily fluids. So I guess the Re players should ready their rocket launchers and find the nearest typewriter

Fun fact A researcher recreated the fungus's structure using an x-ray and a 3d printer and discovered that the fungus does not damage the brain of the insect meaning the fungus just takes over the body below the head of the insect meaning while the fungus controls the insect may still be conscious but out of control of its body

Farmers use something similar for a certain type of bug, they put the fungus on/in a grain and get it on the field. Then the fungus will find the larva and destroy it before it can grow. (Pls don't say it's bad since these types of bug gets more and more every year and destroys the fields that are used for feeding animal and humans)
