the saddest part (in my opinion) wasnt the fact that claus died. its the fact that he had done too much damage to others and what i think made him kill himself with a thunder omega was all of the guilt that he felt after hearing hinawa's voice. in fact not even that, hearing his DEAD mother's voice and not wanting to be given a second chance. all he ever wanted after her death was a chance to see her again knowing that he never would. but after porky brainwashed him to attack lucas and pull the pins there was nothing else he could've done but follow orders

I agree with the idea that he did an action that the brainwashing would allow that was still what he wanted, as a quiet defiance. But I don't think it was guilt and grief that led him to suicide. I just played this for the first time recently, but what made it hit home for me was the realization that the changes made to Claus's body and mind could not be undone, that a shred of him was still there, but that the brother you wanted to save through the whole game had been dead since chapter two. It made me feel like I was being forcibly torn from denial, like remembering a loved one is dead after you wake up in the morning and think to ask them a question. I'm not invalidating your interpretation, but I think that the idea that there was no going back makes more sense than self loathing and suicidality, given Claus did not choose to be changed.

And in the earthbound wiki, it said that it's quite unknown if he was dead this whole time/found dead in chapter 2 or knocked unconscious THEN brainwashed, but in claus' song the "the strong one" or natural cyborg killer I've forgotten, there's an inconsistent BPM, which would symbolise his heartbeat, but because its hard to find the beat, it also means that there's no heartbeat in claus, so that probably means he was being artificially programmed by the machinery whilst he was dead, with the exception of a shred of his normal self still being there since he kinda recognises who he was near the end of his life.

I’ve been looking at this masterpiece for like the 27th time now. Moves me every time... The almost-vengeful attack at Flint as he stands in the way to protect Lucas, as if to accuse him of not being there for him, yet also simultaneously mixed with recognition and regret, the childhood flashback with Claus holding an unearthed flower to Lucas while smiling gently, the subtle change of the music to a warmer, softer tone from strings to nostalgic music box when Hinawa appears, the tearful smile Claus makes as he takes one look at Lucas’s badge to do the full-charge attack, knowing it will be his suicide… everything about this is so tragically beautifully made…

For me some of the most disturbing thing about this series is how it's usually children that are capable of insane feats of cruelty or heroism. All the mother protags are kids, porky is a kid, gigyus to some extent is still kind of a kid. The sad thing is this was legits the end. And Nintendo of America couldnt handle a heart wrenching tear jerking ending so instead of Claus pulling the pin and its legits ALL over, they revive everyone in a dark screen and pretend like everyone is ok. But this, man, i see this, listen to rhe music, think man, if i could get a copy of this game, I'd save this one forever. I'm a religious guy but I'll tell you what, nothing and i mean nothing rends my soul in two like songs like this. Just some correction: this is not an animation, it's an animatic. Secondly, it's clearly unfinished if you look at the later frames that are closed to the end of the animatic. This is still really good all things considered. I hope someone can truly animate it based on this.
