One Piece has done a lot of things that I like to point to in the writing on how to do various aspects of a story as good as possible. Big Mom (at least in Whole Cake Island*) is such a fucking fantastically written terrifying villain. Her backstory is a great bait and switch. You expect there to be some tragic moment that explains why she's such a villain. But, she IS her own tragic moment. She was born a monster. There is no explanation. She wasn't some genetic experiment. She was just, by some horrifying twist of fate and genetic mutation, born monstrously strong. She was too strong to control. She couldn't be disciplined. She was an unstoppable force at the age of 8. And, it's that fate that brought her own tragedy to her life. Then, it cuts back to present day. And, you see the monstrous woman-child crying so hard that it's creating wind. The protagonist of the story, the paragon of strength to the audience can barely move from the sheer force of her crying. She is a walking natural disaster without an explanation. There is no reason to her destruction. She is not something that can be reasoned with or fought. You can just avoid her. But, we've just cut back to the moment in which we realize that the heroes just made her FURIOUS. Truly a bonechilling moment. *I am actually of the mind that Big Mom maintains her status as an awesome, terrifying villain throughout the entirety of her run in the show. I know a lot of people disagree with this. But, come on, 3000 Leagues of Misery is an absolutely gut-wrenchingly horrifying scene. My jaw was dropped the whole time.

The fact that big mom ate caramel and gained her powers, does that mean that you can cannabilise someone to get their powers? There must be a specific part that they must eat to get the powers (I'm thinking heart). Could explain how Blackbeard got Teachs powers and wrapped him in black cloak to censor it.

Blackbeard used his Yami Yami fruit to absorb Whitebeard's power. He didn't eat anything, most likely.

you mean thatch's fruit ? he didn't eat it before teach attack him ! i think bb used is yami yami no mi to handle the two DF ! he might have a normal fruit near WB while he is dying so as on punk hazard the gura gura no mi got on a random normal fruit near then blackbeard ate this fruit and use his yami yami no mi to handle the "shock" so he doesn't "explode" !

@@obmis_arraid21 Talking about the gura gura no mi. When he covered whitebeard we didn't see anything under the hood so it's a fair assumption to make that he could've ate a part of him. Even if he didn't that wouldn't explain why big mom got powers after eating caramel. The closest we can understand about power transformation is that they could've cannibalised them to gain their powers.
