Mother & Daughter 40 mile Weminuche Wilderness Adventure: Vallecito Creek to Columbine Pass

3-Day/40 mile out and back backpacking adventure exploring the Weminuche Wilderness Area with my daughter. This was her 1st backpacking experience….and she did great! We hiked in from the Vallecito Creek Trailhead and then followed Johnson Creek up into the Vallecito Basin and up over Columbine Pass into Chicago Basin. This route had it all…creek crossings, water falls, wild flowers, alpine lakes, wildlife, huge views, forests…lots of elevation gain and loss! The climb beginning at the split for Johnson Creek up to Columbine Lake is pretty strenuous. My son and I are headed to Colorado next week to do this same route, except we plan to camp in Chicago basin and attempt a couple of the 14ers while there. Looks like you had a great time !👍

That will be an awesome hike! My husband and I climbed Windom Peak a couple of summers ago. We didn’t get to climb the others due to the weather, but I loved Chicago Basin!
