As a 51 year old continental African man, I can relate. In the Motherland, one's parents in law are held in high esteem. You just don't interact with them nilly willy as if they your peers. As a matter of fact, if we are to put the so called modernity aside and strictly follow the cultural norms depending on ones tribe, there's protocols involved. The one thing that is constant irrespective of tribe is the mother in law has free reign to visit her child. Not so for the father in law. If he has need of you, he will simply summon you.

I join with Vinman, calm down… As an 80 year old mother of two sons, from Belize, I have 2 DIL and its all about them loving my guys.. so if they are happy,( or unhappy ) I’m good, they did the choosing! allow your MIL to see you loving your hubby. She have a place of refuge, separate, where she can go rest and be by herself when she gets overwhelmed due to different schedule from yours. You are a kind person so there’s no struggle for you, so just treat her with respect, allow her to have one on one with her son, you don’t have to always be present. Take the lead from your hubby because of culture. .. Be yourself, listen to her even if you do not understand the language.. Remember it’s a bit uncomfortable for her as well as you are from a different culture… Observe, listen and you will learn so much going forward.. Lots of mysteries to life! Life is spiritual… 😘💕🙏🏽
