I agree with you about Shelly Winters in Patch of Blue. I remember absolutely hating her when I watched this as a young girl (I’ve always loved “the oldies”. ) I always thought of Sydney Poitier as a savior after seeing this movie. I loved his gentle, moral character and believed it was the part of himself that he brought to the character. Shelly Winters however, I thought was so evil that it HAD to be great acting. Who could be sooo mean to her blind daughter?

Yes! Shelley was the WORST! So awful. So cruel. I guess it's a testament to how good of an actress Shelly was to make us hate her so much. (HA)

Shelley's character was a really wife and horrible mom. Remember her husband found her in bed with another guy.

Good podcast for Mother’s Day. My favorite good mother is Mary Astor as Marmee March in the 1949 Little Women. My favorite bad mother is Rosalind Russell as Mama Rose from 1962 Gypsy.

How about a madcap, screwball mother?: Alice Brady, as Carole Lombard's mother, in "My Man Godfrey" (1936). She was nominated for the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for it.

What a great episode and another one that has caused the watch list of Golden Age films to swell!

I agree that Gene Tierney is magnificent in "Leave Her to Heaven", but I would argue that she's more of a mother to be rather than a mother; she can't really be said to be a mother or stepmother to Hickman's character, despite age difference. She's his sister-in-law. I would substitute Gladys Cooper as Mrs. Vale in "Now, Voyager".

Steve and Ann, did you guys know that John Frankenheimer wanted and asked Lucille Ball to play the Eleanor Shaw role in "The Manchurian Candidate" (1962)? Ball categorically refused the role but can you imagine Lucille Ball in that role?
@FromBeneathTheHollywoodSign6 ай бұрын
I have heard that rumor. I have also read that Sinatra was the one who wanted Ball cast, but Frankenheimer, who'd worked with Lansbury in "All Fall Down", had his heart set on her.

Absolutely delightful podcast. Some great classic movie mothers, good and otherwise. Am also partial to Louise Beavers in the first "Imitation of Life," and let's face it, Hattie McDaniels' Mammy is probably a better maternal figure to Vivien Leigh than Barbara O'Neil. Would also cite May Robson in "Lady for A Day," Alice Brady in "My Man Godfrey" and "In Old Chicago," Anne Revere in "National Velvet" and "Gentleman's Agreement," Olivia de Havilland in "To Each His Own," Joan Crawford in "Mildred Pierce," Deborah Kerr in "Edward My Son" and, yes, Greta Garbo in "Anna Karenina." Also, Beulah Bondi in virtually every movie she ever made ("Vivacious Lady" and "It's a Wonderful Life" instantly spring to mind, but there are many, many others ). Doris Day in "The Man Who Knew Too Much," there's a mom for you, and Mary Astor was a great mother in "Meet Me in St. Louis," a wretched mother-to-be in "The Great Lie." And who can forget Marjorie Main in "Dead End," let alone as Ma Kettle? And on, and on. So many mothers, so little time. Thanks ever so much, Steve and Nan, and Happy Mother's Day.❤❤

So many great Mothers!! I wish we had more time to discuss several of those fine ladies! Happy Mother's Day! 🙂

It use to crack me up as a kid in the 70's when Ma Kettle could not remember all her kids, she had so many!

Mildred was more patient than I would be with evil Veda. Gene Tierney was a hot mess in "Leave Her To Heaven"!
