I met Mother Maybelle when I was teenager - I didn't quite understand what was going on at the time, but she had the most powerful presence I ever felt

My mama went to school w/June Carter when they were young girls. A little white building. One room. They were the same age and played together. But she said June was a little mischievous and would get them in trouble sometimes. lol Maybelle and the older sisters would come sometimes to the school and play/sing for the class. Those Virginia mountains held a lot of memories for mama. And I loved all of them.

I’m one of the youngest here, but I’ve always preferred older music. Oddly enough, I’m here from reading Stephen King’s “The Stand”, and the scene he painted using this song was both eerie and heart-warming. I tend to associate songs or images with what I’m reading, and some stick so that I cannot listen to it without revisiting that part of my imagination. The human mind is a brilliant thing.
@dan.3450
@dan.3450 2 жыл бұрын
I read that about 30 years ago, and it was one of the best of the ones I had, along with "The Talisman", and the Gunslinger ones, as I recall, although he's got so many, you could hardly read them all. There was that Simpsons episode where Stephen King gets in a car crash and is ejected through the windshield, I think it was, and writes another book before hitting the ground. But yeah, there've been a few songs I never much liked til hearing them in the context of a certain movie scene, etc., and if there'd been internet at the time, I might've looked up this song when I read The Stand.
@matthewhollier
@matthewhollier 2 жыл бұрын
@@dan.3450 I’m glad I’m not the only one. I can say the same for some of the movies and shows I watch. There are many songs I would’ve never cared for if a good writer didn’t know how to use it.

Besides the great old songs and singing, Maybelle did so much for guitar picking. Way back in the early 1960s I picked 'folk guitar' in her way and didn't even know where it came from back then. So many 'folkies' played that way. It's a very efficient method of thumb/brush picking that I find takes less effort than producing the same 'boom-chicka' sound with a flat pick. Maybelle also picked quicker bass runs and melody with the thumb and picked up on the 1st string as well. Love her. She opened the door to a lifetime of picking. :)

June Carter Cash (born Valerie June Carter; June 23, 1929 - May 15, 2003) was an American singer, songwriter, actress, dancer, comedian, and author who was a member of the Carter Family and the second wife of singer Johnny Cash. Prior to her marriage to Cash, she was professionally known as June Carter and occasionally was still credited as such after her marriage (as well as on songwriting credits antedating it).
