this song is kinda... parts of it are relatable. all my grandparents are immigrants from different countries but my parents didn't pass down any traditions or languages. so when I meet people who have this personal connection to their heritage it makes me feel like I have something missing. I've got no culture. so that's what this song means to me. even if I claimed a culture it wouldn't actually be mine.

Rachel Gross Canada we don't have a homogeneous culture here most Canadians can say "my family's Ukrainian" or Zimbabwean or Russian or Aboriginal etc and it means something. they have traditions and a worldview that is coloured by those cultural connections, I don't.

What is your favorite food then? What is a saying that is commonly said in your are? Example. I am from the South area of the United States. We conjugate you all as y'all. Its part of our culture. Its something we say that nobody else says around the world except in certain areas such as the west, midwest, and areas in the north with large populations of southern migrants. The indian immigrants in the south say y'all, the asian immigrants say y'all and the hispanic immigrants say y'all, because we share the southern culture. Think of a phrase think of a food, think of your country. Everything around you is culture. Do you take your shoes off before walking into someone's house?

As a Canadian, the "I've got no culture" has an extra bit of depth. The culture I have basically boils down to "The USA but more polite", Canada is a very young and... non-populated? Undeveloped? I dunno, where people live is pretty developed, but there is a lot of places where people just don't live because development hasn't quite reached there yet. Especially in the west, my local culture is one or two hundred years old at best, contrast that with the Irish culture of my ancestors, and the Norse ancestors of theirs, my culture is completely borrowed and fake. Might be the meaning behind the whole "I'm like a kid in a candy store" line too, just a cultural mosaic... Though tbh it's not a bad thing at all, I would just like an ancestral culture of my own is all, not just an identity based on general acceptance and being a decent human being, though again I suppose that's not a bad thing at all either. Am I experiencing a first world problem? I thought I was too poor for that...

***Edit 2023: I wrote this quite a while ago when I was young without really knowing what I was talking about. I in no way intended to encourage cultural appropriation and I apologize if my words harmed anyone in any way. I didn't understand the feeling of being in between different worlds/identities, or feeling like one has no culture, back then, but I have learned a lot more about different people's experiences and have come to experience some of that feeling myself since then. It can definitely hurt or be confusing, and I know I don't even experience it to nearly the same degree as many people do. I am not a professional or expert on this in any way so I can't give advice on how to cope with feeling like a racial imposter or like you don't belong to any culture/identity, but cultural appropriation and claiming things as your own which aren't is not okay. You can enjoy media and food from other cultures, but it can't always be part of your personal culture. I've read talking to a mental health professional may help one cope with issues related to race and culture, and that talking to your family (if you want to and if you can safely do so) and learning more about your roots can also help. I'll leave the original comment for historical reasons for now. I wish everyone a good journey. **Original comment 2018: I just want to say something to everyone saying they have "no culture": Hey, everything "original" is a mish-mash of "stolen" parts from other things. Every work of art, of literature, of anything (every culture!), has inspiration drawn from other things. Creative works are made from memories, from emotions, from ideas--you can't have any of those things without having used other things not yours to get them. You can't have a memory without something to remember. You can't have emotions without things to feel emotions for. You can't have ideas without brain wiring and memories and emotions from different sources. Pick your favorite foods. Pick your favorite music. Pick your favorite style(s) of dress. Create your own culture because culture is free.

@@alyssahansen1400 Hmm... I see what you mean. Yeah, I _did_ use "culture" as a symbol (or whatever a better word for it might be) in this comment; looking the definition up, I see my definition doesn't fit the word's denotation.
