Shame that nobody ever did a deep-dig into the storyline and meaning like what was done with Hotline Miami. Given the latter has a storyline 100x beefier than MRB, this game had imho a deep philosophical ending at least. The character/player is first forcefully injected with Nekro, and this becomes a tool throughout the game. As the game progresses, the effects of the addiction become more and more visible, slowly Nekro starts "speaking" to the character. This culminates in the final boss battle where judging from the aftermath the character fought against some Bratva/Party head, yet the aftermath shows the same person just nailed to the furniture and the whole room in ruins. Essentially the character at this point just went insane from Nekro, and the apparition that was the final boss was imho the player itself, the dr Jekyll and mr Hyde type of thing, the mad alter-ego of addiction. Thus the final battle was not fought against some little twerp but against the addiction itself. The addiction speaks to the character, suggesting an impending doom, and the final battle commences, yet the character/player is unaware that the battle is lost if Nekro is used. The final battle "against oneself" has to be fought "clean", otherwise the character just ODs. Very deep message, I believe, that the greatest battle one ever has to face is... against oneself, against one's own weaknesses, and this is indeed the hardest battle of them all.

I felt bad for Mikail. The Bravita forced him into servitude and then cut his hand off when we were getting too close and due to the stress, he kills himself. I probably would have told him "They cut your hand off, not me. They're trying to use you to get to me. They're scared, Mikail. Have faith in me, we'll get through this. You trained me for this, remember?" before heading off. Then during the elevator, I'd remind him what they subjected me to; three weeks of injections while I was unconscious. No wonder I'm an addict despite me trying to fight it.

fan theory:debunked The fans are part of the background in level 6. MRB takes place in 1986, a year after the conflict on Hawaii. 50 blessings operators (Jacket, Jake, Richter, etc.) were active in 1989 and the Fans started their killing sprees in 1991. Aside from the cameo, it wouldn't make sense canon wise that MRB's story takes place in the same universe as Hotline Miami. The Soviet Union is pretty much on it's last legs, even though some communist jack-ass promises the main characters in MRB that he would bring the Soviet Union to it's former glorious state. Compare this Soviet Union with HM's version of the Soviet Union: a global superpower that forced the USA to sign a Russo-American coalition treaty, who nuked San Francisco without any repercussions for doing so and eventually nuked every major city in America in 1991. Even though it's unclear whether the Americans were able to fire a couple of nukes at the Soviet Union, but that's not really the point. Point is: if word came out about a uprising in the Soviet Union, the Americans would probably launch a huge operation to weaken the Soviet Union for once and for all.

Stylistically, the game was a home-run. It matched what it wanted to portray perfectly and every stage was memorable. Unfortunately, the meat and bone of the game had a lot of holes in it; the attacks didn't feel as impactful as they should have been, too many enemies were punch sponges, and worst of all, the 4 playable characters didn't feel distinct in their play styles.
