To the people saying that episode 20 solves these problems - some quick thoughts: as expected, the FranXX are Klaxosaurs - this is still a weak twist, and they made dr. franxx lie to himself in his own internal monologue to deliver it, which is weak writing. The magma is also Klaxosaurs, which doesn't answer the question of how it works, it just creates a layer of abstraction. How did Klaxosaur civilization thrive without it? Were they using themselves as fuel all along? I'm still enjoying the show, but it's not doing a good job of explaining itself, or of separating itself from the great mecha anime that preceded it.

The VIRM reveal was weaaaaaaak. FranXX = Klaxosaur reveal was obvious (I just wanted to know how they were going to go about revealing it), magma energy thing felt pretty unnecessary. The fact that not all of APE were VIRM was the most surprising thing about the episode. I'm going to have to rewatch the series so far (again) to see if there's ANY foreshadowing involved with the VIRM thing. DitF follows Evangelion's footprints very closely, but also very sloppily; however, it takes itself too seriously to be able to be considered a satire or parody or deconstruction (hah, a deconstruction of a deconstruction). But honestly, I don't care about its weaknesses. I watch a lot of anime and lots of it is probably devoid of any real value. But it's hard to ignore an homage to a series I really love, because it's so entrenched in the Eva "formula" (with some modifications) that it can offer some new ways to examine Eva (or just renew your appreciation for it by offering something inferior).

What did you actually think of episode 20? It felt like a huge exposition dump again, but this time with pretty visuals and gigantic plot twists coming from fuckin nowhere. I was so confused. None of these events were alluded to: TF is the Star Entity? WHO TF IS VIRM? Why did the Klaxosaur princess suddenly shift her focus from stopping the humans to defending against VIRM and how did she know they were coming? It's a clusterfuck.
@jergin4596

Richmond Boswell did you watch the episode? 001's entire goal was to stop VIRM, and VIRM was deceiving humanity to get them to fight the Klaxosaurs. In the episode itself it mentions how this isn't the first time VIRM attempted to invade Earth.

Well yes, that's the difference between atheism and misotheism. Atheism is not believing in a god, misotheism is believing in a god and hating that god. They are two separate, distinct belief (or lack of belief) systems. The movie God's Not Dead didn't seem to understand that...

The old "atheists are inherently immoral" stereotype reminds me of a story about a Jewish teacher. The Master [teacher] teaches the student that God created everything in the world to be appreciated, since everything is here to teach us a lesson. One clever student asks: “What lesson can we learn from atheists? Why did God create them?” The Master responds: “God created atheists to teach us the most important lesson of them all-the lesson of true compassion. You see, when an atheist performs an act of charity, visits someone who is sick, helps someone in need, and cares for the world, he is not doing so because of some religious teaching. He does not believe that God commanded him to perform this act. In fact, he does not believe in God at all, so his acts are based on an inner sense of morality. And look at the kindness he can bestow upon others simply because he feels it to be right.” “This means,” the Master continued, “that when someone reaches out to you for help, you should never say ‘I pray that God will help you.’ Instead, for the moment you should become an atheist, imagine that there is no God who can help, and say: ‘I will help you.’”

@@Arucard.HellsingThe fact that many of the loudest and purportedly most devoted Christians seem to sincerely think that if Jesus were reborn today he'd be railing against immigration, universal healthcare and any sort of social safety net while preaching the virtues of laissez-faire capitalism, white pride and women knowing their place may be disheartening you have to admit it would make for a funny TV show. Imagine Jesus of Nazareth hosting a PragerU episode about how being expected to not intentionally misgender people is like being crucified all over again.

i binged the show so i don't know if there's more foreshadowing but I do recall there being a part where a member of ape did an insanely inhuman attack on the klaxosaur queen and then some members of ape were surprised by the event. This hints at some kind of conspiracy where all the members of ape are not united (hence the main members being part of the Vern and that's why they killed their human counterparts when the aliens showed up)

Crutches exist because sometimes writers fail to account how to really explain what the fuck happened. Yeah they did good on the early episodes but it's entirely possible that they blew their load and just wanted to wrap it up because you're already 19 episodes in and will more than likely finish the series regardless of what they do.

Except they really didn't know what they were doing with early episodes, either. Not only are the early episodes riddled with plotholes, dumb decisions, and inconsistencies, but they're also incredibly poorly written from a narrative perspective. For example, look at Hiro's big 'kiss scene' with Ichigo during the duel. Narratively, this is meant to show how mechs desync and that's fine, but then it goes further and tries to make this big emotional thing out of Ichigo's feelings for Hiro which were never established. Heck, Hiro and Ichigo have barely even talked before this point and now we're expected to care about her big dramatic love confession thing and about her being flustered over an action she should have no sexual connotation over at all because NONE of these kids know what a kiss even is??? I'm sorry, but just no. I don't see how anyone can really defend such a poorly set up BS. You can't just show us two characters who've barely talked before and just expect people to care just because you play some dramatic music over it, that's the type of crap we all justifiably make fun of SAO for all the time and Franxx doesn't get a pass on it just because it's partially from a studio that's known for making great shows.

dracocrusher true, they did suddenly make drama between inchigo and hiro, but what can you expect. It would have taken the series longer for the proper character development needed and then just for two characters who dont even end up with eachother, it would be unnecessary. But they do end up making sense out of inchigo's love for hiro, sadly with flashbacks, but at least you understand why you chose hiro. He gave her a name, in a world where their identities didn't matter and made her feel like she mattered. Especially is a cruel world like theirs, it was enough for her feelings to be understood. Jusr imagine if she kissed him and they put mad back story into this. And then he still ends up with zero two, we'd all be confused due to the heavy back story between them both. It would be interesting I admit, but it would make the story longer and essentially only for one piece of the whole plot And then of course the kiss gave the response it did, cuz since one of the shows themes is what does it mean to be a human, her emotions, rather being kind of dumb or not, were important to the understanding of how their human instincts are always intact, and even a cruel life cant change that. Our brains react to the sight of sexual things irl, and in the show as you see the boys reacting to the girls clothes melting, realistically, they probably would not have cared considering all they know is following their mission and would never have time for their pervy minds to run wild always training and thinking about their purpose, yet I believe its good its like that becuz its relatable. Idk I guess thats just how I feel, even if i could be wrong

+Akko is my Daughter It would take time to properly build up a full relationship to work off of, but they really don't need to do that, they just needed to imply that there's something there. And because it's the second episode, there's a lot of room for clever artistic misdirection or implications. I mean, especially if this show relied on tropes or archetypes as a quick shorthand, it would be super easy to showcase a quick connection between Hiro and Ichigo in the buildup to the fight. But all of this is going to either work or fail much more easily based on how much the audience is into Ichigo and Hiro. Which is always going to be a subjective thing to some extent, but yeah. So how do we make these characters interesting and engaging? That's a question writers have been struggling with since the beginning of time, but the answer generally seems to be to give them distinct well fleshed out characters and moments that set them apart from eachother. And here's where I think a lot of Darling in the Franxx really falls apart outside of the logical plotholes and poorly thought out storytelling.... Hiro's just a really boring character to me. He wants to do the thing that his genre dictates he'll eventually do, but outside of that he doesn't really have any preferences or likes or dislikes, he's just a kind-of boring reserved calm MC and Ichigo falls into a really similar trap because she also has very little to her. Which is a huge shame because usually Trigger's protagonists are amazing at avoiding this problem and they're usually very distinct and memorable with personalities that are easy to understand without having to devote much time to them and their side characters are just as memorable and fun. Like for example, if you had this dual-pilot premise with Little Witch Academia or Kill la Kill then it'd be way more interesting and engaging because those characters have things to work off of eachother with. I can easily see them doing fun or interesting interactions between Akko trying to work with another witch or with Ryuko or Gamagori trying to find a partner and how their different personalities work off of eachother. Heck, Gurren Lagann basically already does this with the main mech and it works amazingly. But then you get to Hiro and it's just like... what is there to really get invested in? In trying to make the series super dramatic and serious, they gave up the distinctness that would help character personalities and without the depth behind these characters to make up for it, you're just left with basically nothing to work off of in a show about relationships where characters having depth and personality to them is the most important factor to the entire series. Thankfully 02 delivers on that front big time, but that really doesn't help any of these other moments based on other characters that mostly just don't have enough to them to make them feel engaging outside of their strong visual designs.

dracocrusher true, your absolutely right. I came in thinking this show would be good since a boy and girl pilot one mech seemed like a perfect situation for relationships, yet their characters are really unestablished. Inchigo's love for hiro, and Inchigo's response to the Goro's confession and thw character , konkoro and mitsuru relationship, hiro's personality, are but some of the things that could be a lot better. I still believe their to be high points in the show, like when the boys and girls had a fight over the boys perversions and hiro brings a mature point on why they should think more about the girls feelings and what strives his love for zero two. I admit it though, any other main character from trigger, would have been more interesting doing the main role. I hadn't many of the plotholes but im gonna look at it again to pay attention to what they were

Not knowing what you're doing and not explaining what is going on because of it is no problem as long as the story is engaging. From the beginning the series set this up: A guy wants to get into the robot, but needs a special rebel demon girl to do so and she seems dangerous. The human settlements are clearly in a very terrible situation (we know very early about the lack of emotions for example) and the leaders seem very suspicious and arrogant which indicates that they are the true bad guys. The only thing that is needed to tell the story after this is that the writer keeps the viewer interested from then on, there is nothing here that needs to be explained and nothing needs to be revealed. In episode 1 the audience already knows everything it needs to know in order to accept the plot. So what do you fill the remaining 23 episodes with? Well character development and plot development of course! Exploration of the setting can be a bonus and if there is some natural drama that can be created from the events during character and plot development that is great. But none of these things are necessary for the story to be interesting. Please do not excuse poor storytelling when there was no need for the poor storytelling in the first place. Creating forced drama and other terrible and uninteresting scenarios is not excuseable in the least. If you can't do a good job of something then there is no point in doing it at all. And it is not like the subjects in Franxx didn't have time to be developed better. I have seen a multitude of series that are capable of handling several side plots at once. Your only argument or excuse is that the writer is bad.

This came across my feed this again morning, and it got me to reminiscing about how it was revealed things went sideways in production, and that so many of the issues pointed out in this have been revealed to be the result of an entire studio dropping out last minute. Let me explain. When it was announced, DitF was to be developed and produced by two studios, Trigger doing odd numbered episodes, and A1 doing even. Know how many episodes A1 delivered? 1! They dropped out after delivering a single, solitary episode. So Trigger had to re-edit their already in late development episodes to hide the gaps which now existed due to missing half the planned episodes. But, they were still on the hook for a 24 episode series. In comes Cloverworks, a new studio founded by former A1 employees. They suddenly have 3 months to write a whole new second half of the show, and animate it. Frankly, that the story is even coherent shows the incredible talent at both Trigger and Cloverworks. The original shooting script was later adapted into the Manga, so if you are curious how the show was supposed to go, I strongly suggest reading that. That we did not get what they planned is truly a tragedy.

I think it is a great show that delivers great symbolism and themes and it’s greatly Misunderstood, still my favorite anime. All that said I do like the manga better and I would love for the manga to get a reboot like they did to Fullmetal alchemist brotherhood. Being that DITF is still getting attention to this day like the english manga being released, Im still confident we will get a reboot animation

I thoroughly enjoyed Mitsuru's character arc however, from being an edgy kid with an inferiority complex to where he ended up in episode 17 and the start of 18 was very well done for me. The main thing I don't like was how it reset the relationship between Mitsuru and Kokoro's relationship to square one, but I feel like this will be resolved by episode 24 (and if it isn't then that will change my opinion on the slice and life episodes entirely).

Maybe the back half needed either more time in the oven or more work on the plot than they thought. Not the greatest on the writing process, but let's say they had the show ready until episode 15 ready. Then take a year off to put together a stronger plot and the rest of the production process. Not that it would've happened because of the show being produced by two different studios, but I think it would help in this hypothetical situation

I thought the whole "Im an atheist " line was Dr.Franxx's way of saying that his world view was grounded on practicality rather than morals and ethics. @sanfransiscon

Dr. Franxx is like a failed attempt to recreate Victor Frankenstein. But Victor was a more compelling character because he was FLAWED instead of EVIL. He was a coward and he was obsessed, but he was relatable because he struggled between condemning himself for his actions and trying to run away from the responsibility of those actions. Victor's downfall is not "because he's an atheist" but because after playing God, he became afraid of what he had set in motion. If he rejects the idea of a flawless creator responsible for incredibly flawed creations (humans), how wretched would his own creation be? Dr. Franxx instead has no real struggle with his pursuits of science. He doesn't reject the notion of a flawless being, rather he believes that humanity is meant to become flawless. You could even say that science is his god.

DITF for anyone that hasn’t watched it: 1. Starts off with a girl, Zerotwo, who’s looking for her soulmate that she last saw when she was like, maybe 5 years old 2. She finds Hiro, and uses him to find her soulmate by pretending to date Hiro 3. Zerotwo starts losing her sanity and is basically dying. Also almost kills Hiro. 4. Zerotwo realizes her “fake” boyfriend is actually her soulmate she was looking for. They beat the main alien through the power of love and whatnot. 5. There’s a great ending, cool, cool. You can end it here. 6. Writers proceed to troll the viewers by rushing the ending by adding unnecessary DLC villains and then killing off the two main characters. 7. *July 7th, 2018 shit ending incident* Edit after one year: I MEAN FUCK, SWORD ART ONLINE WAS BETTER

except that it isn't when the ending is set up. spoilers, by the way, in the movie "a beautiful mind" based on actual person john nash, there are several characters who are hallucinations in nash's mind, because he suffers from paranoid schizophrenia. they set this up by having these characters simply appear in scenes with no mention as to how they got their, as if they teleported in or walked through a wall, because they're not real and can't do things like "open a door". so, you can totally pull off "it was all a dream", but for that to work, you have to set it up and design the story around it, you can't just throw it out at the end and pretend it answers everything.

as an atheist, having an evil atheist justifying their beliefs and their villainy would require a hell of a lot better grasp on nihilism than most authors are willing to gain, which, combined with tradition, is probably half the problem. i would be interested if a story opened with the villain justifying themself with "i'm an atheist" but over time you saw more facets of them and understood them better and started to see the cracks in their psychology that show why they would think "i'm an atheist" is justification for setting fire to a planet's atmosphere.

I always get scared when people ask what is stopping me from doing horrible stuff since I don't believe in God aka divine punishment, because, like... is that it? Is that the only reason why you don't kill, rape and or torture other living creatures? Because you fear punishment from God? Are you telling me that you would do all that and more and anything you want if you didn't fear god?! Is that the only thing keeping you from hurting, stealing or lying to other people?! That is damn worrying!!!!
@skyfox4072

Sir Canavar I think it's less divine punishment and more of a lack of divine guidance. These things aren't conclusions that people have normally reached historically so without God there would really be no way to say something like "murder is wrong" without the silent addendum of "in my opinion". Event the morality of most atheists in the west is still influenced by Christianity. People rarely develop their own systems of morality, they tend to get them from where they're living and the culture that they live in.

Sol King Of course of course. Please, do not think I am putting all religious people on the same box - never. It is just some of them, that some times pull stuff like that, that makes me kinda worried that some people out there arived to the conclusion that steping on other people is bad not by their own morals that they developed after some life experience plus thinking - and thus I should not hurt the other because I do not like being hurt -, but because God/other person said so. Thank you for not being one of those.

Yeah, as a man of faith, even I'm fucking sick of "I'm evil because I'm an atheist." It's just low hanging offensive fruit at this point. What if there was a villain who believed in God, but hated the concept of sin and rules that justified salvation, so they wanted to create immortality in hopes they could make Heaven on Earth? That's way more interesting than saying that Atheists don't believe in morality.

If only the "connection" is required, why not have a secondary seat for the other pilot next to the driver, and just have a normal dashboard for the controls and screens in front of the driver. Also, the secondary pilot is not even attached to her seat, the first time the mech falls she is going to be a bloody mush in the ceiling of the mech. Or worse, disable the driver by slamming into his seat.

Dude i really appreciate your work and all, but i completely disagree with you this time. None anime has a magic formula, and darling in the franxx is no exception. It brings something new and unexpected each episode, and because of that create a bunch of blank spaces that if remained unanswered would be just a bunch of info gathered for no reason. It isn't the best anime of all time, and also isn't near to it. But its world building still very remarkable and its a good anime in many ways, and the part the impresses the most is that they did all of that going strait to the anime, without needing an manga base. With tons of boring and bad anime coming every single season this should be very applauded and respected.

"New and unexpected" what do you actually fucking mean? Every episode is the same fucking shitty teenage love drama with some wack ass aliens who gives a fucking shit. Franxx is one of the worst anime series I've ever seen right alongside SAO. The characters are all a snore. The main character is the most BASIC BITCH anime hero, that his name is "HIRO." That's a goddamn red flag in any anime for me. No personality, no defining character traits, just like all the other characters. None of them push the agenda of being AMAZING. Even zero two is ass, but everyone is blinded because she's the only half interesting one. Plus "Haha abnormalities." If an anime makes me want to fall asleep every episode, there's a fucking issue. The pacing is garbage and all the characters are bland while fitting into a shitty anime cliche. "haha I'M THE FAT CHARACTER, I LOVE FOOD" Darling in the franxx is a chick flick shrouded in fan service so horny teenage boys that watch it don't realize how actually bad it is. I really wish that Darling in the Franxx kept the backstory more mysterious, or at least developed it slower. I really liked the air of uncertainty about the world and wished that it could keep the theme of young people learning more about their world and being unsure of what they're doing. I will continue to watch this show as I still want to see what happens to Hiro and Zero Two, but I'll always be kind of unhappy by the bad pacing. I'm guessing that they had to speed it up because of the fear that they'd have to rely on a season 2, which might not have happened.

One thing though, despite the problems here, I still think the whole situation is passable enough, it doesn't really harm the story that much, specially after the latest episode. Shingeki no Kyojin though, I dropped the series after the reveal in the manga, the story just became totally boring. I'd have bought a "Titans are aliens" or "Titans are a mutation", or even "Humans are the Aliens in a Titan World". Any of these three would've been decent enough, but what actually happened was so lame... Well, the story was already losing some points for pretty much focusing far too much on the leaders instead of the MC and his sister, and completely ignoring his character progression ever since the "I'll kill all Titans" scene.

Eun-Sung Lee, you may not care about 2-week hiatuses (and neither would I - I just want what's best for the show and its creators), but you have to remember that in this industry, you get allotted a fixed slot of TV airings over a set period of time, and you simply *have* to deliver, because that's the contract you've made with the publishers/cable company/TV stations/whathaveyous. If you don't meet demands, terrible things happen, so it's not as easy as "just take more time". In a world where many, many anime vie for a place in the spotlight, getting that sweet "24 weekly episodes deal" set in place is both a blessing and a curse. You have your chance, but you also have a limited window of time, and a very rigid schedule on which you *must* deliver. (And *then* there's stuff like Steven Universe and Cartoon Network's episode delivery "schedule", which is so radically different and inscrutable it frankly just confuses the hell out of me.)

To me the problem is, hints and foreshadowing isn't the same thing as a reveal. Yes they've hinted it, and we can infer that the Franxx are related to the klaxosaurs. What is the relation though? Are they clones? Are they reverse engineered? Are they just dead klaxosaurs bodies with armor? Hints and foreshadowing gave me ideas on where the show is going, but the writers shouldn't just assume that I've reached the same conclusion that they were going for and move on without explaining it.

I don't really agree with the first half at all, mostly because I think sometimes telling while showing is fine as long as you make it interesting (which they did IMO), but also because I thought the pointlessness of the relationship was the point. Dr. Franxx never seemed to actually be invested in it until it was too late, and his supposed lack of ethics was nothing but lip service until after her death. The "I'm an atheist" bit came off as more of an excuse he was giving to people for his theories and work, rather than an excuse the writers were giving us. He's presented as a genuine psychopath as far s I can tell. Then in the middle you just lost me Geoff. Trying to compare a fictional story to real life as directly as you are is already a bad idea, but your premise is also so...flat. APE is presented as having a lot of clout politically and scientifically, and you don't get there without money in the first place. APE is representative of those oil companies within the world's fiction, they are most likely the ones in control of the fuel sources before magma power as well. It's just a really bad assumption to say "oh this could never happen because the oil companies would lobby the fuck out of it" as if APE isn't already presented as the literal Illuminati puppeteers already. Also complaining about the "obvious twist" and other elements of "how did they not know it wasn't going to work" plot elements...this is part for the course in mech shows that aren't just literally space operas. The robots are special with little to no explanation, or the explanation is a plot twist that everyone expected.

Its his opinion, the reason he dislikes all those things is because its done in one episode in the most simple way possible. Its not that these things aren't possible, they are just simple and overdone. His explanation of why they are a bad way to tell the story is what he is talking about. If you like mecha-operas, thats fine. But a major point of why this series was interesting is because it had good world building, nice action, and nice characters. In the latest episodes, it stopped caring about those things and just decided to stop the MAIN action, and tell stories in the most overdone ways possible. THERE WAS potential for it to do great, but it was wasted and settled for average. Its like if your favorite original pizza place was destroyed and replaced with dominoes. Its not bad, its just not good.

just to respond to a single point, would you accept it if a cruel, money-hoarding miser in a story excused their actions by saying "i'm jewish" with a straight face? because excusing immoral behaviour with "i'm an atheist" is similar. and yes, atheists have been persecuted in history much like the jews have, socrates was executed for spreading doubt in the gods back in ancient greece, so no, it's not a difference of "the jews were attacked and the atheists weren't". and i'm not even offended, i was mostly confused, then annoyed by the lazy writing. what if his excuse was something fun, like he came out and just said "i want to fuck a dino-robo-monster girl", and that was his entire reasoning? stupid, sure, but also a lot more fun than "i'm a cardboard cutout of a stereotype".

The Atheism = immoral shtick is actually really popular in Japanese media, especially, because of traditional older people scapegoating every problem of modern Japanese society upon the rise of atheism in Japan. In addition, it is very obviously what they were going for. Mentioning that he was an atheist in the way he did was so completely unnatural and forced. Furthermore, he was even outright called a heathen by his boss for what he was doing and clearly depicted as, yes, an awful person without having established any motivation for him besides him being an atheist. I mean, seriously, he literally respoded with "I am an atheist" in response to "what you are doing is unethical." These two things are utterly unrelated and yet he actually stated that him being a bad person was because of him being an atheist; furthermore, psychopaths don't do that, they don't consider themselves bad (they don't even considered such a concept to be meaninful). It is extremely unlikely that anyone would consider that they are a bad person for what they believe in (unless they have been taught that doing so is wrong--and yet he clearly takes pride in his atheism due to his smug look). This scene was patently absurd and obviously bigoted. I also agree with everything that Oscar said. This episode was a lazy info-dump disguised as a paper-thin narrative about a cardboard cut-out of a scapegoat as its focus and narrator. Not to mention, no, him complaining about APE taking control so easily makes perfect sense; APE would have to have replaced the oil companies in this fictional universe otherwise, and as they only suddenly appeared in a world that seemed to have resembled our own this makes no sense to assume. Also, episode 20 makes it clear that this is impossible as well, because APE are aliens whom only just arrived on the earth at the time. In addition, no, APE was not presented (in episode 19 even) as having a lot of political power; they were referred to as a start-up group; they simply appeared and lacked influence until their immense success which was extremely contrived for the reasons the guy in the video stated (that oil companies would not simply allow some start-up company to expensively alter the entire world's main natural resource sector over a couple of years...Not even to mention that doing so in 7 years would not even be physically feasible...)

@Yal Rathol Well, Socrates was not actually an atheist, but yes, he was persecuted by people believing he was. (He still believed in the Gods of Athens and even that their laws were ordained by the Gods; he just believed that people should have reasons for what they believed in (which the people he questioned did not, and so he challenged them). From what little accounts we have of Socrates' beliefs (mind you he never wrote down nor published any of his philosophy) he considered himself to have been divinely inspired in some sense.

Regu oh certainly, i don't mean to say he was an atheist, athiesm wouldn't exist for millenia in any true sense, the best you would get are deists and well-traveled agnostics (which i will always hate for being a terrible word that means something other than what the words say). however, it is a fact that he was executed for teaching children to doubt the words of the temples and the holy texts and that the mindset of "question everything" that he and those like him helped to propagate eventually gave rise to the scientific revolutions and the birth of materialism, nihilism and atheism. i simply used him as an example because i figured it would be more visceral if it was a famous smart person, rather than "and the romans didn't just throw christians to the lions, they also threw pagans and atheists" or something like that.

Reminds me of something said of David Cage's terrible games, "It is easy to write interesting questions, writing interesting answers is the hard part." It is so easy to create a world with interesting questions of how it works, how it got to be that way, and what is going to happen next. And you can carry a story on dripping information towards those questions for a long time. Humans are curious, and will avidly follow to get those clues. But then if the eventual answer is a cop-out like 'magic/god/ancients did it' or something else stupid and/or unsatisfying then the entire story *retroactively becomes shit.*

The key is to manipulate the audience into thinking along the same lines as the writing team. Learn to control the audience's curiosity and you'll avoid having the audience's expectations outpace the creativity of the writing team. Foreshadowing and Chekhov's gun are a few ways of doing that.

In my opinion it's all but impossible to create a world that doesn't have some ties to something beyond human limitations. To have any fantasy element in a world, it has to have come from something in the past, and even if something is broken down into a science, the tiniest parts of that science are still beyond the limitations of human understanding. At some point, humanity will reach its limit or breaking point, and the ancient civilization angle can be used effectively as proof of it. I haven't kept up much with FrankXX, but it seems like their misstep was making the Doctor venture beyond the limit, but come out of it pretty much the same as before. Lovecraft's eldritch horror works because it's all about "you don't go there, if you do you won't come back the same".

I disagree with the opinion that it immediately went down hill after 15. I think developing the secondary characters was great. It is entirely a character driven show focusing on the development of Squad 13 and their journey toward autonomy. The action was really just some icing on the cake. However I hardily agree that the show shit the bed with episode 19 and 20. The writers pulled a sharp 180, shoehorning in a convoluted backstory and plot filled with undeserved, un-foreshadowed reveals and twists. I'm pretty sure this sudden flip of narrative approach is simply a means to an end. The writers knew where they wanted the main characters to be at the end of the series, but they didn't know how to get them there, so they contrived this bullshit alien invasion/Franxx are Klaxosaurs plot line to use as a vehicle.

The plot exposition dump is just to prepare the audience for the final fight of the series in the next 4 episodes, at least they have now ticked the "world building" box over on their bucket list.
@CrypticParad0x
@CrypticParad0x 6 жыл бұрын
I disagree. I don't think they did this to check a box. They already had subtle and enigmatic "show don't tell" world building that was quite impressive and very rare to see. Like I said, I strongly believe that the writers had to more or less tack on thise contrived plot simply to use it as a vehicle to finish out the character arcs. Also, I don't think this sudden inclusion of a plot dump was to "prepare the audience for the final fight". No other fight in the series needed a convoluted plot to justify it. This isn't a battle shonen. While it has good action, it isn't an action focused show, nor is it a plot driven show. It is character driven. Thus is would make little sense for the writers to shoehorn in this info dumb to prepare the audience for a fight, when the fighting isn't and hasn't ever been the focus to begin with. Just like every other battle thus far, they could have included some brief, pseudo-enigmatic information as to why the fight is happening and the audience would be entirely satisfied.

The original manga had this whole exposition before it even introduced the first character. They just delayed that for episode 19, and had plenty of time before that point to be more subtle about explaining things. That opportunity however, was not used to its fullest extent. This seemed like a hurried attempt to not deviate too much from the manga and trying to explain everything as quickly as possible to introduce the aliens for the audience before they run out of episodes to air.
@CrypticParad0x
@CrypticParad0x 6 жыл бұрын
+Token Finnish Guy Sorry but you are completely backwards. There was no original manga. The manga is an adaptation of the series. The anime came first. The manga is a side project begun due to the success of the anime. The script for the series likely existed in full before the idea of the manga adaptation was even put on the table.

Why is it so radically different in the way it is presented from the manga though? It does not matter which way around they are- it is still quite an odd decision. It does not also remove the question why they condensed so much lore into just two episodes; it wouldn't make sense from a writer's view especially since they have been dropping hints slowly all series. The fact is, they have just 4 more episodes left, they probably had to dump all the info to get to the final climax of the show without leaving the audience any questions.

Reposting this here because the thread on reddit got deleted or something: I feel like a lot of the genuine problems Geoff had with this episode (i.e. not the normal anime suspension of disbelief) come from some expectation that if they're giving us an info dump, that's all we're ever going to get. The episode that came out on CR a half hour before this video went up suggests so much more about the Klaxosaurs and their origin. Of course we weren't going to see every little thing about them in an episode dedicated to explaining humankind's side of things. I'm sure we'll get the rest of their story from the klaxo's side, now that we have a character that can communicate that (code 001). Also, I don't know why everyone acts like the discovery of immortality is just injecting magma energy into their veins. I just rewatched all of those scenes in ep 19 to make sure I wasn't misremembering, and it still seems pretty clear to me that magma energy provided an amazing and abundant energy source, which helped spur on scientific discovery and evolution. Yeah, the dude is floating in a vat of orange liquid, but he'd be burned alive if that was magma. Same with the stuff they inject into someone later in the episode. They discovered immortality because of magma energy's overall influence on science, not because it's magic juice you drink to become immortal.

He... really doesn't. He kind of looks at her grave, then at her nameplate, and he barely spends more than thirty seconds in the narration on it. And barely talks about her. And doesn't even stick around to get their marriage license approved because there is something more interesting happening with his work. The point Geoff misses here specifically is that the reason as to why Franxx commits these horrific acts is because he's a sociopath who doesn't care about anything outside of his work. In fact, I think you could say that the reason why the love interest gets shown at all is to specifically demonstrate that someone who he should have, by all rights, cared deeply about was actually pretty meaningless to him. Not to say that that couldn't have been done better and less clumsily, but hey.

dr. frankenstein wasn't atheist though, and the monster in the book makes allusion to himself being comparable to satan in paradise lost, a creation hated by its creator who turns to evil for attention and justification. and considering the book was written in the early 1800's england, where being atheist was essentially a white collar crime, it's unlikely any of the characters in the story were even intended to be godless. later versions of victor frankenstein changed him to the prototypical mad scientist, which is often associated with being heavily anti-theist, but that's an evolution of the tropes and not in the original book.

I’ll admit that the series has some problems but I think you’re being too hard on it for the sake of a single number that appeared on screen for like three seconds. A lot of your complaints are “all this wouldn’t have happened this fast”. If they had just made the number onscreen 2125 would you have had a problem with it? I don’t think you’re supposed to put so much weight onto such a small thing. You’re not wrong about the points but it seems extraordinarily nit picky (though I guess that is what we come to this channel for after all). Whenever I see a little inconsistency like this, I just assume it’s an alternate universe where things would progress that way in that timeframe (it’s not like this stuff is actually going to happen in real life in seven years anyway). That said, this last episode leaves me with a lot more questions. Anyway, still a good analysis. Made me realize some problems with an episode I didn’t even see any problems with. Love the channel, I look forward to seeing your thoughts on the series once it’s finished.

To be fair to the writers - from a geological standing, the removal of magma from the mantle would cause the reduction of the Earth's magnetic field and therefore cosmic rays would damage earth a lot more than they currently do - this could lead to stunted plant growth and a high chance of cancer within any unshielded populous. The whole "draining life from the soil" was pretty dry though, despite there being some merit in the initial science.
