The clearance of stone built terraces was short sighted. Today they would be refurbished and become desirable....much better than the concrete tower blocks that were built during 60's and 70's.

Some excellent footage. Watched Glencairn Tower being demolished & my father was born on Roman Road. Fair to say the town planners from 60`s & 70`s completely ruined the town.

This was a shock, I grew up in Addie St and remember the old cottages that the Garion was built on. It’s amazing just how black the Mill Rd looked. 😍😷The tenements around Calder street were really grim. There was a small community of blind people in there. When they demolished the Royalty they also knocked down my favourite sweetie shop Blair’s ( with the billiard hall upstairs). I’ve never got over it 😤.On the car park site in park st was a wonderful Polish bakery That opened at 8 in the evening ( as lots of bakers in Motherwell did to sell rolls to the night shift workers) The bakers would always give you an iced cookie straight off the board 😍. They also destroyed the “Times Office “ Toy shop at the cross. My granny worked in the cinema on Watson St that was raised to the ground 😱 Airbles St , Destroyed ( with another sweetie shop demolished 😱. Mills the record shop where you bought your Beatles and Stones record, Destroyed 😱 The Royal Hotel on Brandon St , ditto. The Council really gave the place a hammering. The Luftwaffe couldn’t have done a better job.

I don't know Motherwell but the red sandstone tenements remind me of Glasgow. it's fascinating to see towns as they used to be and people going about their daily lives. Far less traffic even in 1979 than today, and then most vehicles were built by British manufacturers. Thanks for this, and the electric organ adds period atmosphere!

I remember going down the new shopping centre when I was off school one day....I was dodging school. What a transformation. Its so easy to forget despite all these years of seeing the changes. Motherwell was in real need of transformation.

The blitz would have done less damage than the council, who also wrecked a village just up the road from here - New Stevenston, where I was brought up among gardens, paths and parks that would still be winning awards had they not been concreted over for the advancement of capitalism.

I was born after most of the "reconstruction" had occurred so i've never seen Motherwell look any different. It's such a shame that they were so short-sighted to demolish those lovely old buildings.

Propaganda, and ingenuine ... Atl least, so I think ... "they" tore Motherwell apart (as "they" have done all over Scotland), and they have justified it with ... Well, think for yourselves ... this commentator is as much from Motherwell as I am Russian (oh, and I am from Bellshill) ... I tired after 16 minutes ... and I am "pissed off" (apologies, if required) that this could be given any credibility whatsoever ... William

Hi Chris. it would be great to know where you sourced this brilliant footage from or if you have any of your own footage of Motherwell we would love to use it in our programme where we discuss a steelworker from Motherwell.

Hi Mia Campbell, I obtained this video whilst converting it from but to Dvd, I am sure it was a programme on tv but I will contact the person and see if he knows what the original source is. There is a FB page called Motherwell past and present, you could join and see if anyone has other videos you could use.

I have found out who originally created this film, I will attempt to contact him over the next couple of days. A couple of questions, what production team do you work for and do you have a contact number?

What a complete shitehole. The people of today with their computers, iphones and fancy cars have never had it better. And yet....for those who lived back then it seemed a whole lot less complicated then and with a community spirit that is gone today.
