Even easier way to think about it: Gordon covered the same distance while driving as biking, except he went three times faster, which meant that he was biking for three times longer. That means that the time spent biking is the same as the time to take three car trips. If x is the amount of time he spent in the car, then the equation is x + 3x = 8, which obviously simplifies down to 4x = 8, which further simplifies to x = 2. So, he spent 2 hours in the car. If you go 45 miles per hour for 2 hours, you've traveled 90 miles. No distributing or multiplication outside of the elementary school times tables necessary.

Gordon rode his bike 90 miles to get to his car which spent half of his day. Gordon was late to work because he spent 8 hours getting his car. Gordon was then fired for being late. Now Gordon can't afford his car and has to sell it. Gordon could have asked a friend to give him a ride. Don't be like gordon

Remember you can set it up however you want to cause the distance is the same either way. 45x=15(8-x)

This comment is a little late... but this is how he got 6: 15x = 45 (8-x) 15x = 45*8 - 45x 15x = 360 - 45x (add 45x to both sides) 60x = 360 (divide both sides by 60 to get x alone) x = 360/60 x = 6

He got 8-x because x is the time it took him to get to his car. And since, the total is 8 hours, (8-x)+x= 8

He got 6 by simply solving algebraically. He did 8-x because that would give you however much hours are left after x. How are you all watching this if you can’t figure out how he got x?

@davidtrice859713 жыл бұрын
He certainly took the long way at arriving at the answer. Since the distance is the same and since 45 is 3 times 15; then here is how you get the answer. x = number of hours driving. 3x = number of hours biking. It is given that the total number of hours is 8. So, x + 3x = 8. x = 2. He drove for 2 hours at 45 mph. He was 90 miles away. Bingo.

Algebra is stupid. I understand that if your job required this than it be reasonable to know. BUT WHEN WOULD YOU USE THAT BEING A MARINE BIOLOGIST AND WHO CARES HOW FAR HE BIKED THERE! HE SHOULD HAVE DRIVEN THE BUS! AND COULD YOU JUST ASK HIM HOW FAR IT WAS? Wanna know why people from the 1800's didn't teach algebra? Watch and be amazed. "Class take a seat" "Yes Mrs. Ubert" "Ok class today we'll learn distance and rates, Elton how far would it take Margret to walk from her house to school?"
