I think it looks ugly too. But the apple watch with the white band that Tim Cook was wearing looked pretty good. If I were to buy an apple it will probably be the white band one, but with that being said. I have the moto 360. I was lucky enough to have a black one. I didn't like the gray/silver one. ***** this review does not represent smart watches in general, as you stated. You need to try the Samsung Gear Live before you summarize "smart watches in general". I get 14 hours of screen-on, with average use on the Gear Live, and I assure you, I get _way more_ notifications than the average person. Battery life and always-on display aren't an issue on the Gear Live. Processor governing isn't an issue either. The Gear Live has a quad-core processor and its used appropriately. The Gear Live even comes standard with always-on and we had to work to turn it _off_. Also, you need to remember that you have a MASSIVE display here. While its display is round, computers don't do round. They calculate squares, so your round display is just wasting pixel calculations and the power goes to a massive display. You are basically using the power of a square display of the same size. I think most of the problem with that Motorola watch comes from the OMAP3 processor. That SoC was an early model which was not as refined in hardware or software as the Snapdragon 400, found in the other Gear watches. Believe me, given the choice between OMAP and Snapdragon, from a development standpoint, I'd rather choose the Texas Instruments OMAP. The Snapdragon is locked down, APIs aren't published, and because of this I have trust issues with anything Qualcomm. However, the point remains that all OMAP mobile device processors are pre-Project-Butter hardware. They haven't had the appropriate hardware and software tweaks for instant processor scaling at the time of touch. To summarize, MKBHD, you can't judge smart watches in general using this particular device. It has a massive display, inadequate battery, and old hardware/software drivers adapted to run the latest software. These are also the reasons the Moto360 never appealed to me.

***** the gear live, like many devices, gets better battery performance after about 10 deep-cycles. Its charging rate _sucks_ as its limited to 50mAh on a 350mAh battery, but that also means it will stand the test of time better due to less heat. The quick power gains from the moto360 tell me that it probly gets warm on the charger. Does it?

***** lmao are you actually upset right now? The reality is, smart watches are just not worth the money right now. They are still way to early in development to be worth spending $300+. If you've got the money sure, spend it. But average consumers (I'll use myself as an example) are definitely not going to spend that kind of money to check things that are literally sitting in their pocket. Everything I want to know is on my phone, which sits in the exact same position as my watch anyway, just in my pocket. I'll take a $100 watch that, arguably, looks much better, over any of the smart watches on the market. Sorry.

Yes. Pebble actually has the right idea. Make a GOOD WATCH. Then enhance it with smart features. Don't try to shove a phone into our wrists like everybody else. I mean a watch with barely a day or 2 battery life, barely usable display outdoors, doesn't keep the time constantly available, reacts to accidental touching, XD bahahahaha, that's straight up ridiculous and backwards.

Hey you totally right about the Pebble I have it too and I love it has what a great smart watch should do, but it's plastic (unless you got the metal) the band is not leather not fancy at all. I just bought the 360 and it's super elegant color screen leather metal. Just what I need in some special occasions.

Great review! One quick correction - I don't think the ambient light sensor triggers screen off. When you cover the screen, it is the touch (not the lack of light) that triggers screen off. Works the exact same way on the Gear Live and the G Watch, which don't have ambient light sensors. Also I just tried covering only the M360 light sensor, and it didn't trigger the screen off. Where as if you just lay a single finger across the M360 screen, it triggers screen off. The ambient light sensor only controls device brightness.

Having just returned my 360, I can safely give impressions on it as well. I had the LG G watch, which I returned because it just didn't feel right, and the curve of the the Gear Live fit like a glove, so I got that one. I returned it shortly after because I was lucky to get 8 hours out of the sucker, plus the charging cradle was so cheap, ALOT of people were asking where to buy replacements given they would snap off the little plastic prongs holding the charger to the watch. I waited till the 360 went live, and got my hands on one. Initial impressions were pretty good actually, but the battery life was always a bother. When I say tempermental, that's putting it on course. Some days I could get 12 hours out of it, others, it was back on the charger around 6. Also, it does NOT work with all Qi enabled chargers. I tried it on my Nokia pad, and it seemed like it trickle charged and just stopped at 85% then started falling. It all depends on usage of course, and also, something that contributes to the battery life, is the watch face itself. Since Google has yet to put out the API for faces, all the ones you see in the store and online may look pretty, but if the refresh rate is high (say to make a second hand accurate etc), that also chews at the battery. There is one thing I would like to see on all Android wear watches, and that's the ability to turn OFF the motion sensing and allow people to turn the watch on when they need it on! Also, some of you may notice, but the CPU seems to stutter a little at times, mine did when I turned it on, and it had to load up the custom face. The nail in the coffin for me was, I experienced what quite a few others have as well.. DEAD PIXELS, well in my case pixel, but once I seen it, my eyes gravitated towards it like a pair of naked boobs every....single....time...and it drove me nuts knowing that I paid 275 for this (plus shipping), and it had an issue (some people claim to have upwards of 5-9 dead). Its a good first effort by Motorola, but for me, it just didn't live up to the hype, which I bought hook, line and sinker. An antiquated processor, false claims of all day battery life (the Gear live has a 300mAh battery, the 360 has a 300-320mAh battery and the G Watch has a 400mAh battery), and those who claim to get 20+ hours, obviously are not using it that much or delusional. The fiasco with the initial update and people turning it on for the first time, only to have very little charge AND an update automatically installs, thus killing the watch mid update. It just seems like a huge cluster fuck to me. Regardless, if you have it an you like it..kudos to you and I am glad you enjoy it, but in the end, it just wasnt for me :(

"construct their products to a high standard before releasing them." This is true. As much as I dislike Apple, they make very high quality stuff. *But* that quality is reflected in the price. And I get that some people have a lot of money to blow and like the build quality Apple offers but when I look at what I'm getting in terms of functionality vs price, I never thought Apple products had much value. And on top of that I very much disagree with their business practices. The whole "walled garden" thing really rubs me raw.

Jeeze, this thing is definitely no looker outside of top-down promo shots. I was pretty excited for it too. Edit: 3:04 is exactly why round screens might not be the best for usability.

DaxDrixen DxD But smartwatches are companion devices that go with phones. I don't think you should have to charge both each night.

i get roughly 7days on my pebble. ps the pebble keeps it's display on FULL time. sure it's monochrome but it just works.
@92ASC10 жыл бұрын
Ammar Fakih why does charging even matter? As long as it lasts until you get home and go to bed I don't see a problem with charging every night. The only reason for your point being valid would be for traveling or camping. And even if you were traveling, I think you would have at least one opportunity to charge up within the 30-36hr(my experience) battery life of the 360.

The quality on this thing is terrible, and it's still $300? Apple watch is better in every aspect and only $100 more, when it comes to quality products you can't compete with Apple imo

I seriously don't understand what's the point of a smart watch. It's just a hand watch. It supposed to just show the time and if it's a more expensive one show you the temperature and stuff like that. There is no need to slide around your finger on the scree, no need for google on a watch, no need to show your notifications on it when you can simply take your phone out of your pocket. And the battery, I mean common, a watch that needs to be charged like every night, it's just stupid. Don't get me wrong, I like technology but a smart watch, in my honest opinion is just a waste of time.
@LufxB10 жыл бұрын
I mostly agree, but I do see a point to it: it's a cool gadget to many people and to some it's even a fashion statement. But you're right in the sense that functionality wise, there's not enough incentive to have one (imo) since you can do everything directly from your phone. Although in the end, if people don't mind the price and like the watch, then they can get one and be happy lol
@beo792910 жыл бұрын
people didn't understand iPad at the time either - "It's an Iphone, but bigger. Who wants to spend money on that?" Well, you see where I'm going...
@DanielHDXO10 жыл бұрын
iPad it's just a tablet nowadays :). Don't relate that with a watch.. But yeah, I see your point. Still, to me and I'm sure to some other people these watches are just a pretty much useless ideea..
@LufxB10 жыл бұрын
Quiet possibly in the future, everyone will be using these. Sure the iPad is just a tablet, but before, people used to think tablets were useless because they could do everything with their more powerful laptops. But it turned out that people like them for better mobility and ease of use compared to a laptop. ***** As of right now, Android Wear cannot use Google Wallet (the equivalent of Apple Pay). It would be cool but it hasn't happened yet lol. But all the other things you mentioned, Android Wear can do (depending on which Android smartwatch of course).
@DanielHDXO10 жыл бұрын
Yeah but at least we like tablets for their mobility, easiness and mostly for the pleasure of moving our fingers over a nice big screen. This is just a watch... All a watch is supposed to do is just to tell you what time it is, that's it. I don't see the need to be able to scroll a few pages on your watch or to read some notifications, or to google search something when you can do all of that with your phone which sits nicely in your pocket.

Other than the older processor and small battery, my only gripe w/ this or any smart watch is the strap. I have snapped many a watch strap over the years and the traditional pin style used does not cut it. I would have preferred the chronograph style. Having the solid metal casement with the military, strap-through bars on the sides would have been the best way to do it. If this was done, I think strap sales would double and we could get some awesome paracord versions too.

My review is if you wear regular watches everyday the size is not an issue, the new software update makes a huge difference on the performance and battery. If you want a Smartwatch that is below $200 this is the one to get, I got the steel band one below $150.

I have the LG G watch R and I really enjoy it, mainly because it looks like a watch first, and functions as a notifications display second. I think that's a key point for smart watches. They're not phones, they're watches and should be worn according to your style.

Excellent review of the 360, very informative and honest about the software and battery life. When I saw the Pebble kickstarter took, my money. Then when I saw the Sony smartwatch2 ebay got the Pebble and Sony took my money. Looks like it's Motorolas turn to pick my pockets - that's if they ever get any stock in the UK!

Nicely done review. I've always been fascinated with new tech and I usually wait for a more trusted product to avoid the "bleeding edge" of tech. In this case, I made an exception because as you mentioned, I think the watch itself is just really cool. The fact that it can change faces and sync with my phone at all are just nice extras. My take-home for tech on this, like most people that work remotely, is that I can keep from checking my phone all the time to see if I've received that reply I've been waiting on! It's kind of a cheat, but when you're with people and checking your phone, it can seem rude. The haptic feedback or a well orchestrated glance might really help me out.

I'm glad I got one. First gen so I expect it to have some growing pains. I wear watches everyday and size isn't much bigger than my Calvin Klein. Battery life not an issue as I take it off everyday when I get home like all my watches. Advice - charge it all the way before you set it up!!!

im just using the lg g watch. The battery is great. Obviously a trade off for the diplay. Personally I like something that just works. It has to last at least one day from charge to charge. But it is the best looking by far and that means more to some.

If I can control Spotify on my phone using a smart watch on my wrist, I'll be happy. Working all night while listening to music with a note 4 in my pocket, changing tracks becomes a bit of an issue. If I can do that on a smart watch like this, that would be hugely useful to me personally.

I have a Moto 360 and I have done some battery experimenting with it an so far I am averaging about 36-40 hours a charge. Sometimes I have been able to Squeeze 43 hrs. This has been before and after the Wifi update. These results are with texting notifications, samsung account updates, email, occasional app or two displaying notifications, step counting and the very frequently checking the time. However, I have have ambient screen off, have it set to auto brightness, and turned off heart rate monitoring because i don't really care much for that. Turning ambient screen off doesn't make your screen stay on all the time. What I noticed makes a huge difference and maybe that is why i am getting 3-4 days of use out of it, is that one i turn it off when i go to sleep, and two that unplugging it when it reaches 100% and not leaving it plugged in makes the battery more stable. When you don't you lose about 5% the first 30 mins and about 3.4% every hour. Which turns out to be a 28.5 hr battery life. When you unplug it again at 100% you get about 2.7% an hour . If you work that out it makes for 37 hrs. Now that is a huge difference. Try it it might work for you.

+Jose Espinoza I get more battery life out of my watch by using a filtering app called eNotify. It allows me to completely control which email and sms notifications are delivered to the watch. I only allow messages from priority contacts like my wife and boss and what not.

One thing I have noticed is that the ambient display mode doesn't actually keep it on all the time, at least since the lollipop update. It seems to work more like the ambient display mode on the Nexus 6, and actually only turns on when it is facing up and turns off
