Moto Guzzi Stelvio 2024: RIDING the next great TOURING machine?

I have put 400 miles on my Stelvio and I really love it. I am selling my Ducati Multistrada v4s because I prefer the Guzzi. Wind protection is great and the electronic screen is wonderful for me. Anyone complaining about weight is just trying to find something to complain about. Turn your handlebars all the way to the right she will pop right up with little effort. Gear box is improved over the Mandello, but I wish Ohlins suspension would be offered. The price is good in my opinion, a bunch cheaper than a GS and for me the Japanese cookie cutter bikes have no soul. Bravo Moto Guzzi, excellent machine.

Problem in Australia is that the dealer for Guzzi is also the supplier. So you’ve got nowhere to go in a warranty dispute. In comparison to BMW, BMW has a far superior warranty.

@btgmoto I also own a Ducati multistrada v4s, and I don't see where the Stelvio carries its weight any different. If you're worried about weight, don't get a full size adventure bike. The Stelvio is not really designed for hardcore off-road duty anyway. seems 890 Duke may be better suited for you.

@@Motomack1042 Multistrada V4, despite being glorious on the street, already got knocked off my list ages ago, and I totally agree, the Guzzi carries its weight similarly. In fact, they're both similar to the Africa Twin or an 850 GS. There are bikes that carry it lower though, for better and for worse. KTM/Husqvarna for example, with their 790/890/901 adventures, and BMW with 1200/1250/13000 GS, ride very differently and are way easy to handle at a standstill, car park speeds or on dirt. As I said in my review, the Guzzi handles superbly on the street, it was just the slow stuff that put me off. I wasn't 'looking for something' to fault, I was honestly just saying what I found to be a negative. I am looking for a bike like the 890 Duke for more track stuff and street antics (that's a sportsbike, naked thing), but I have my Tuareg 660 for the dirty and long distance stuff. I took a step down from a 1250 BMW last year specifically because the GS was getting dropped a lot off road, and the Guzzi would be even worse than that, for my use case. It's a great bike, and I can tell you really love yours. Enjoy it!

As an ex Guzzi Griso owner and serial boxer owner currently on a GS, I think I’d take thIs, although at 5’7” the ‘tall weight’ would probably have me choose the V100 Mandelo.

I drove the Guzzi V100 Mandello early last year. And I had the same impression of that engine. It´s great and very Guzzi like. The looks are beautiful for both bikes the Mandello and the Stelvio. The Mandello reminds me of the glorious times when the 850 LeMansIII was a thing! Typical Italian I´d say.. I had a little issue with the gearbox. It was a bit clunky. But after i came back from my test ride I realized I got the version without quickshifter 😱 For that it really was a smooth ride 😳

Nice report. I also ride a new Stelvio. The engine has a lot of power and the chassis is 95% great. In contrast to a GS, it still has character and is a lot of fun and exciting to ride. And for €16,000, it's a fabulous motorcycle. The GS is already over €26,000. I have to disagree with you on one point, though. Old Guzzis were just as reliable and had no defects. Most of the time, the owner's unprofessional repairs were to blame.

I saw this bike like one or two weeks ago in the internet and immediately thought it looks similar to the 660 Tuareg...This is a huge compliment. i personally love looks of all new Moto Guzzi's even though I am a bit too young to ride one of those I really appreciate how do they look. G'day from Australia. So excited seeing you do the Stelvio. We got 5 Tuono's in the family and thinking of doing an Adventure bike for gravel roads (not going bush) in the future it'd have to be a choice between the two Piaggio stables.

If you're buying it for rough roads, the Tuareg's the clear winner in my opinion. But on smooth tarmac the Stelvio is great.

In my case it really comes down to how I feel on the bike. That's why I can never bike a bike without test riding it first. However, looks also matter and this is the best looking adv bike to my eyes.

I’ve still got a T3 but had a Strada 1000 so with you on the cult of Guzzi. I like GS/GSAs for the lower centre of gravity and what’s put me off the likes of the T7 for example. I’ve 5’8” (and a bit) but a GSA works where the T7 was both tall and heavy. This is clearly a GS alternative with few ever likely to do more than the odd bit of gravel to justify. I like “adventure” bikes because of the riding position and comfort not for any off-road antics. The screen seems a huge failing after what will have been a long development and testing programme.

Funny stuff and well done. Thank you. I am looking at this bike, an r1250gsa and r1300gs. Took a short ride on the stelvio and agree with you. Loved the motor and feeling of locomotive like straight line stability. Didn't like the huge clunk shifting into first gear, believe it needs bar backs and the windshield is too short for my 6 foot height. A little top heavy and not cheap. What will it cost and weight once you add crash bars, luggage and other stuff? Nevertheless I will have another test ride when a bigger windshield from the aftermarket is available.

I would prefer the Mandello, which is a sport tourer, for the road, but an Aprilia Tuareg 660 for a light adventure tourer. Get a 1300 GS as a compromise between the two. The 1300 GS is just that good.

This is my dilemma. I have a V7 Special 850 and love it but want to upgrade for longer distances. I’m set on shaft drive for convenience sake. I test rode a number of bikes and had settled on the Yamaha Super Tenere….until a few days ago. Now I am looking hard at the Stelvio, but can’t get a test ride. I guess I will have to sit on one for ergo test and assume I’ll like the way it rides because it’s a Guzzi.

Now you need to try the V100 Mandello in order to compare and contrast. 😀 Also it’s pretty important with these two new Guzzis (that share the same drivetrain) to distinguish between the standard and the S versions with the semi active electronic suspension. They make a huge difference to the character of the bikes. Some people prefer with, some without but both are right. It’s whatever works for you.

Similar in very many ways. Quite top-heavy, both very torquey. I found the AT motor quite vibey, whereas the Guzzi is quite pleasant with it's vibes. They're soft and reassuring, whereas the AT is a bit harsh. No doubt the AT will be much better off road, but I think the Guzzi is better on well surfaced roads. There is a new AT this year with a 19" front, that could be interesting to try.

Is the cruise control working at 50 km/h in 6. Gear? First time On the Tuareg i was a little bit confused, that cruise control is not working in every gear at every speed

Unfortunately, I never tested that. And I never even thought to. At 50kmh I'm mostly in urban environments and very anxious, not cruising at all. On top of that, and sorry to be the bearer of bad news here, 6th gear in top gear at such low speed is generally outside of the 'response' area of most motorcycle engines. They're not cars, and engineers will normally have a specific load/rpm combo that provides adequate acceleration for the low-authority of a cruise-control system to actually function. I'm betting that 6th gear at 50kmh is outside of that envelope, by some margin! Cruise normally has low authority, like maybe 10-40% throttle +/- . But how much would you need to lug up a hill at 50kmh with a headwind, quite a lot of throttle. And the bike would be lugging hard, lots of shaking, all adding up to uneven acceleration and a cruise control that turns off due to bad feedback in the loop. That stuff will work on a Goldwing, but not a 660 Tuareg.

I actually liked the newest Telelevers (not the old ones). But, the front end on this pretty predictable. It's a good handling bike, and certainly worth a test ride! I found it quite sharp and sporty. It feels heavy on the sidestand and light on the road.

Hahah! So 1) Nope, not at all. Normally you're worried about knees hitting the intakes on a Guzzi, but not this one. And it was a nice angle for me to the pegs (but I am relatively short legged!) 2) It was the salami and cheese laugenstange :)

Some test rides coming out these very days report that the engine gains rpm very smoothly from 40 km/h in 6th gear much appreciating this elasticity; on the other hand, they state that below 3-3,500 rpm the engine seems kinda "empty", or "gentle" (..maybe a a polite way to tell it's a bit disappointing..). I had the same feeling some years ago when I tried a V85 E4, jumping down from a Stelvio 1200 4V which I still ride currently with full satisfaction. Frankly speaking, would you say this emptiness is real or it's something which we can forget about and get rid of, by considering that this is simply a "non-topic"? Thanks for posting the test ride.

Comparing the torque of a big block to a small block is apple to oranges.

The old big block is a tractor in comparison, and that off-idle torque isn't here on the new Motor. But it's faster, lighter and revs easier. Midrange is also strong on the new Motor.

Oh PLZ - Africa T is worse to drag around the P places / taking of the stand..... This one does not feel much heavier to deal with, than the V85TT ( have both ). Yes - Mandello is easier to live with, but Stelvo feels more secure going in the bends 🤷‍♂🤷‍♂

Many asked this question across the past months and they stated that this set-up is fine: it's not a matter of know-how. Anyway, they say, we have the know-how, we were the first to develope them, and if this need should arise, we'll be ready to answer. They know what they do: Aprilias are famous for their set-up and this Guzzi was developed in Noale. A common comment emerging from every test these days remarks the excellent balance.

@@giumbolorossonero Sorry, but i believe el.suspension is mandatory in order to be sucsessful in the Adventure touring market today. All the competitors has it. Riding alone vs. fully loaded with passenger & luggage requires different suspension settings. At least for the preload, but also in the damping. But as mentioned, there will probably be a version where this becomes available.

Theres no Aprilia vs moto guzzi production quality. Its all piaggio. And moto guzzi bikes worked since forever. Lots of bs statements about italian bikes from a brit, of the land of crappy bikes of the past that owners had to fix and still have to.

Well don't take it personally, but Guzzis weren't always shining examples of reliability and build quality. They've had very high high-points, and some moderately embarrassing lows. Hey, I've owned plenty of crappy British bikes, and plenty of good Italian ones. Also vice versa. And in the video I do say that Moto Guzzi is now Piaggio, and share production and technology flows. Maybe you think that because British twins used vertically split crankcases on twins, and thought cork was a good gasket material, that my opinion doesn't count in 2024? Your statements are pretty funny; All Moto Guzzis have worked since forever? Even the most reliable brand's most reliable bike hasn't worked forever. Now, there's plenty to nit-pick in this video, so go back and find something useful, rather than just commenting random fanboy stuff. I actually like Moto Guzzi, and right now I own an Aprilia that has had an oil leak in the first 400kms, and will probably need a fuel tank sensor before the end of the month... It's all Piaggio now, as you quite rightfully re-stated. I think the Guzzi badge has a strong future ahead of it with this level of support and engineering. Would I expect the bike to go through it's first year without a fault or warranty claim? Nope. My last BMW had 3 recall notices, so don't feel that I'm hating on Italian bikes. And I didn't buy a Yamaha Tenere 700, even though I think it would be more reliable. Over and out.

Before commenting, listen to the video. I literally explain the dry and weights. I owned a GS for 50,000km, and while heavier it carries its weight lower. The higher centre of gravity is noticeable on the Guzzi.
