Mate. Have just come across your video on u-tube of the Motobécane AB1 rebuild. Very nice indeed. I acquired the same bike when living in France in the 80’s and it has been a slow ongoing restoration process. I was wondering if I could ask your advice from time to time when I get stuck. Monty

When you set the ignition timing remember that the motor rotates backward (looking at the flywheel it is anti clockwise). Set the points gap to 0.4mm then set the piston to 3.5mm before top dead centre on the compression stroke (both inlet & exhaust valves closed) the flywheel can then be placed unto the crankshaft tapper and rotated anti clockwise (making sure that you do not rotate the crankshaft) until the points are just about to open the give the flywheel a tap with a soft mallet to fix it on the tapper. Check with a tester or meter to make sure that it is opening exactly right and if it is tighten the flywheel bolt.

As the Throttle is a lever instead of a twistgrip I find that to Change Up I pull in the clutch lever wilst closing the throttle. Then change up and open the throttle again wilst letting out the clutch lever. To change down I leave the Throttle as it is then as soon as the clutch lever is pulled in the moter will rev up due to the load being taken off the motor, then change quickly to the lower gear. This takes a bit of getting used to and needs to be done quickly for it to work well.
