The Honda CRF450 received minor frame and engine updates for 2023 and stayed the same for 2024. Last year we logged over 100 hours on our 2023 Honda CRF450 and another 100 hours on our 2023 Honda CRF450 Works Edition. This bike here has 30 hours on it, and we've learned a lot about this platform. In this video, MXA's Dennis Stapleton goes in-depth about the CRF450's strong points and weak points, highlighting the key points to keep an eye on and explaining the changes we made to our test bikes.

The video title should be The Good, the Bad, the Ugly - 100 hrs each on the CRF450 and CRF450WE. That way, there's no confusion. The video title makes the viewer think that MXA out 200 hrs on ONE bike, not 100 hrs each on two.

I have a 2015 crf250r with 401.9 hours on it. It had 19 hrs when I bought it. I keep fresh oil in the engine, and trans side, and clean the air filter every oil change. In that time I've had to shim the valves back into speck once. The bike still runs great, and starts easy hot or cold. The clutch is finally getting weak but to be fair I'm 220 lbs and I'm aggressive with the clutch. Obviously I wouldn't recommend going this long without a rebuild but at this point I'm kinda wanting to see how many hours I can get on it before it blows up. 🤷🏻‍♂️

@@hoerenj0ng141I’ve speculated some of it is placebo. Like with the pivot bolt being 5% less torque. Make that change and don’t tell the rider I really question if they would notice.
@hoerenj0ng141
@hoerenj0ng141 Ай бұрын
@@tactikoolcloud8788 Exactly, I wonder if one of these test riders has the balls to do a blind test and is able to tell if anything changed on the bike. From engineering point of view, clamping force of the bolt beyond a certain point really shouldn't affect flex in any way that can be noticed by a human. Especially for stuff like linkage bolts, where the entire force goes through bearings and spacers. Additionally, a bit of grease on the bolt has a massive change on clamping force at the same amount of torque, and the whole thing becomes a shit show to compare between bikes

The clutch dilemma is a deal breaker for me. Not going to check my clutch that often. Checking valves on Austrian bikes is a 10 min job if you already have the tank off.

Good video. I'm extremely skeptical that torque settings on bolts (apart from triple clamp ofcourse) can be noticed by any test rider. I would love somebody to do a blind test on that.
@UnsungThermidor
@UnsungThermidor Ай бұрын
It's dependent on the person. Some people are able to tell a difference, others aren't. It depends on the part that's being torqued. Especially with pivot points. Whether it makes much of a difference is also dependent on the rider.

@Runk3lsmcdougal it's really unfortunate honestly. Lying about certain characteristics of these bikes is really not good. Most people aren't lucky enough to test ride a bike before you buy one. So we go to these test videos on KZbin to help us make our decisions on which brand to go with. These people need to be honest about these bikes

I had a 2020 honda 450 and it was really strong and hard to ride. Of course, while it is the same engine, they have said that the engine has been detuned and its delivery has been smoothed. But still, compared to the other bikes... Edit: maybe they are doing it to promote the incoming 2025 honda

@jones0618 @Runk3lsmcdougal It's up to you to decide who to listen to! We have all the current 2024 450s to ride and test year-round. We always talk about the Honda's strength being its smooth engine and its weakness being the handling with a twitchy chassis (which can make it hard to manage). We write about this bike in our magazine/website articles and in our shootouts talking about the pros and cons of the CRF450. motocrossactionmag.com/mxa-race-test-2024-honda-crf450/

The engine has changed a lot since 2020! On the track the 2021-2022 engines were smoother than 2020, and in 2023 they made the intake longer and mellowed out the power even more for '23-'24. For context, the 2020 CRF450 made 59.74 horsepower with 35.9 ft-lbs of torque. The 2024 CRF450 56.66 horsepower with the same 35.9 ft-lbs of torque.

the most autistic review i've ever heard of any thing ever. "make sure all your bolts are torqued to exact newton meter or else the feel is off" just get better. a top 3 rider will hop on a stock bike and smoke 100th in the world on a factory bike any day of the week cus they're just better.

You really haven't spent much time around a top rider. They are even pickier. Jeff Emig hated titanium front axles and no matter how many times Kawasaki put one in his bike on a test day he noticed immediately. Mike Larocco put the lightest Honda front caliper on his Hondas for years. Dennis doesn't just work for the magazine he has been a paid development rider for an OEM. I have also had pro riders tell me they feel carbon skid plates affect the chassis less than aluminum.
