Sometimes I watch your videos 3 or 4 times to burn them in my memory. I'm not trying to stroke your ego, I'm being very serious when I tell you that your instructing style, subject knowledge, and editing is ON POINT! I couldn't tell you how many times I've spoken out loud your diddies like "brake-brake-brake" or "WAIT, WAIT,... THROTTLE". Yes I only have a cruiser, but that doesn't make it any easier. For one, I'm a beginner, for two body position and line selection is much more important because I'm limited as far as my lean angle is concerned. I've already scraped my floorboard because I didn't take away enough lean angle.

Hi Greg, I am a 75 year old rider. I started riding on the dirt at 13. Later in life I retired as a motor officer from Oakland, CA PD. Currently, my go to daily motor is a BMW 1250 RT. I found you so enthralling entertaining in this video I didn't realized you had back ground music until 16 plus minutes into it. Your work as a motor instructor is a valuable asset to the riding community. Keep up the good work! Greg Smith, Sacramento

Greg, I think this is one of your best videos! You totally engaged me as an audience member, so just shows you're a great teacher. And when you said that you will start to notice what others are doing and how they are not doing it efficiently and correctly I was nodding my head in agreement (as I've experienced this myself), even though I consider myself a novice rider. 10 out of 10! And thanks again.

I’ve been riding for 40 years…and was getting ready to give it up due to the heebie-jeebies I have always felt due to uncomfortable changes in suspension geometry in turns that have been occurring because I was trained to never touch the brakes or throttle in a turn….your videos, especially this one, have changed my riding style, my confidence, my understanding, and have increased my enjoyment of riding so much that at 60 yrs old- it all feels like I’m 20 again. Everything feels smoother, more in control, no heebie-jeebies and I’m moving much faster through corners. The biggest plus of all? I am safer on the road. Thank you.

I don't often comment on KZbin videos but you are a blessing man! I am 28 and recently started my motorbike journey ob cb125r and I live in the UK. With it being winter and all, every single blind corner that I take was pretty much "hope I'll make it out alive" with constant rain and sun going down at 4pm, commuting is terrible and I don't own a car. I've been watching your videos so this one popped up on my feed and completely changed my perspective to cornering as well as using the brakes. Today doing one of the most daunting corners I go through everyday, which is literally a downhill 100 degree turn to the right, under heavy rain, it felt like a bliss. I am much more confident, relaxed and aware. On top of being genuinely funny, your concise relay of information and putting out there for all of us to learn so selflessly, you ARE a life saver. I am not exaggerating. If I am making it alive back home to my son everyday, it is partially thanks to you.

If you are watching Greg's video to judge his character, or his opinion on few things, well you are missing the point and you are not here to learn anything. Look where you’re going before you wind up going where you’re looking! It’s okay to take a glimpse at the “Hot Chick 💃” walking down the street for example, but don’t stare (fixate) otherwise you’ll end up on top of her and not in good way!! 👈 That really happens more than you realize! Also, way back in the day we used the term “riding the brakes” which basically meant trail breaking through a corner. 👍

Excellent training video. What I paraphrased below if I understood you correctly is what resonated with me to take corners more safely. Knowing when to accelerate and apply throttle is key while reducing lean angle. You have to have patience mid corner.....Wait....I'm still leaned over but now I'm pointed towards the exit and now if I want to accelerate hard I can do so while simultaneously reducing lean angle and bike is raised up as I'm watching the exit. You cannot take away the lean angle until the bike is pointed to where you want to go. Lifesaving information contained in this video.

Patience in the corner is a good comment, so is not entering on you can’t see through at high speed and committed. Previous riding buddies did this routinely because ‘they knew the roads’. We have winding country roads with agricultural equipment, kangaroos and Chinese tourists stopping to take photos. Usually in the worst possible places. 👍🏻

Target fixation is a great thing to get out of the way while mountain biking on some fast but relatively safe singletrack... it's probably best to actually experience it rather than try avoiding it with academics alone. I say this just because it's such a natural reaction to fear/the unexpected and should probably be put to the test before you're out on the road. Then the next time you're in that situation you'll instinctively recognize it and your body will react correctly. It's something that should only happen once. It happened to me when I was a kid, and I've seen it happen to other new riders. I've also seen it happen to people who said "that's stupid, it would never happen to me". Most riders who haven't experienced target fixation are ticking time bombs. Experience is king and nothing to be ashamed of. Just try to experience things as safely as possible. Same goes for crashing... I couldn't fathom getting onto a motorcycle without crashing a bicycle first. It seems like bad luck. You're going to lay a bike down at some point so do it on a bicycle. There are just too many ways to crash a bike and you're never going to be a truly good rider who can ride near your limits without getting some under your belt.

May i make a comparison to bicycles? You are cornering, inner pedal is up, if you accelerate (pedal) before the bike can be straight up you'll hit the ground with your pedal, scratch, ouch ouch. Never underestimate learning to corner on a humble bicycle!
@andrewj22
@andrewj22 5 ай бұрын
Here's my issue with trail braking: *You can only keep braking while you're going faster than the ideal speed.* Once you're going the ideal speed or less, you need throttle (otherwise your speed will become even less than ideal). This means that, in order to trail brake, you need to: 1) enter the beginning of the corner at higher than ideal speed, and 2) accurately predict how much a given amount of braking will affect your speed. Sure, if you're very experienced with the bike, you can probably do both of those things. But if you're not a seasoned biker, or it's a bike you haven't had lots of time on, entering the beginning of the corner at higher than ideal speed seems dangerous. Oddly, the purpose of trail braking is to increase the pressure and contact with your tires on the road surface. But, in order to get that benefit, you have to be taking the corner (or at least the beginning of it) at a higher than ideal speed. So not only is trail braking a bit risky, but it only seems useful when you really want to fully maximize the speed you're taking the corner at. It's safer than not trail braking for riders cornering at the highest speeds, but for everyone else it's useless because they probably don't want to enter corners at the higher-than-ideal speeds required in order to use the technique.

I must admit the last part trail braking Ive braked hard before the corner and let off and then started the bend as in braked to the speed I want and then hit the corner . I have ben riding for 40 years and have been lucky not to have the front wash out. saying that I am going to try the trail braking. one thing I did on my zx12r was keep the bike in 3rd and higher revs to give me control of the speed letting me be able to shut off if the speed was to fast and open a little if I was going to slow. I would also prefer the going to slow and the "oh Sh*t" moment . I have taken the zx12r to the edge of the rear and close to the edge on the front too over the last years but my knees and neck are giving me problem so Ive opted for a slower bike to help with the position H2sx se I have found this bike turns SO much easier without counter steering I just look and it turns LOL love it and riding slower too ( helps keep my licence ) I will try out the trail braking though I already did the others. And NO I've never got my knee down lol to old to try now

Listened carefully everything you said, excellent explanations. Again to my conclusion biggest precursor to making any of these even if you know what you should do is excessive speed which shortens the time window for all these operations making you prone to either false judgement or not enough time to react appropriately.

Save it for the racetrack, just enjoy riding and arriving at your destination with all your limbs.

I use to do exactly what you mentioned in the video. Add lean angle and accelerate at the same time. Now I know that I will lose my front end and have a low side. I will only accelerate when I am reducing my lean moving forward. Thanks a ton for the video. Cheers. 😊

ryokai (affirmative lol)! still going to take advanced classes when i can, but thanks for all the free tips we would normally have to go to a formal class for. I dig that you're realistic about riding, having some speedy fun but doing it smartly and safely, hell yeah. I mean, if you don't like speed in some way shape or form, why the hell do you even ride a bike right? I can do that in a car lol.

I target fixated once. When I started riding it was a turn that made me a little nervous. It was a s turn that a lot of motorcycles wreck at. Was coming into it a bit fast and started staring at the white line getting closer. Then realized what I was doing and made the turn no problem.

The advice to "let go off the throttle before corner" isn't really sound. Some newbies might get it wrong. You have to deccelerate before corner yes, but you also need to maintain certain amount of throttle throught the corner. It keeps the bike planted and stable while traversing.

Some newbies might get a lot of what I say wrong because they don't have the knowledge or experience to understand what I'm saying in the first place. Listen to what I say after that because I already knew someone would say what you just said.

Your slow motion is a bit interesting. When you are turning right and pushing the right bar to the front, it will add more lean angle and combined with throttle it can end very badly.

Hi. I know you used to own a Honda CRF 250/300L - rally I think. I have the 250. For dual sport riders with 50/50ish tires how much of this vid is applicable? I know you can’t lean with dual sport bike as one would with a street specific bike. I’m the guy that’s at speed limit/+ 5 and center in/center out. Just want to be sure I create the correct habits. Thank you in advance!
