I'm guessing this is plagued with the same issue as the GT4 and Spyder then?
@marcfd37564 жыл бұрын
I own a 718 GT4. The gears are not an issue. There's ample torque down low for driving around town in a spirited but civilized manner and a ton of power up high for when you want to let it fly. This is an old school set up for an old school style car. It's not set up to be driven like a turbo charged engine with short gears that utilize the very low rpm torque via a pdk. For anyone who grew up driving high power, naturally aspirated engine, manual transmission cars, the GT4 is a perfect throwback to the cars we loved as teenagers and young adults. If it's not what you want, don't buy it. But saying there's something wrong with it just shows a lack of understanding of what this car is all about and ignorance of how cars like this are supposed to be put together.
@preritdas69984 жыл бұрын
Haha that's funny :) Tall gearing on 2nd is something people have complained about. Porsche says it's for fuel and noise regulations so You're not shifting so much, but really, who knows. It's not something I'd be concerned about.
@Fluterra4 жыл бұрын
@@marcfd3756 you really don't understand how gearing works and what a car like this needs. Or you're trying to justify your ~$150k purchase. The manual makes this car a Disaster. A GT4 with PDK will make sense, but not this.
@marcfd37564 жыл бұрын
@@Fluterra well, to each his own, I guess. Applying the skills I've developed over 42 years of driving high powered cars with manual transmissions to this car has been a joy. I enjoy it much more than our twin turbo BMW with steptronic or any other pdk/ steptronic I've driven (although the M version of the Z4 with steptronic was petty cool). The bottom line is if you're having fun and enjoying the car, then it's the right car for you. If it's not what floats your boat, don't buy it, or configure it the way you like (with a pdk). The great thing about Porsche (and this is my first) is that you can set the car up to suit your likes in terms of transmission and breaks and then easily make adjustments to the suspension and aero. Plus, you can drive it around town and take it to the track without making a bunch of mods. The gearing is just one piece. I like it and it suits my needs and the way I drive perfectly. And it seems I'm not alone. One final thought, I've noticed that, with some exceptions, younger reviewers don't like the gearing while older ones think it's at least fine, if not good. Maybe because older drivers grew up with long gears? Check out the gearing in older super cars, they're very similar to the GT4, if not even longer!

I get your point about the GT4 being a better investment, but it doesn't provide better driving dynamics... on the street, like in SF with lumpy canyon roads. On the track? Sure, but much of that is the sticky rubber you'll need to replace twice as often, at much more cost. Realistically, people who buy the GT4 are scared to put miles on their garage queens. The GTS is a car you can drive, tour, and track comfortably, on any tarmac.

From what I read and saw the gearing of the GT4 and Spyder are apparently different than on the gts and not enjoyable as much for everyday driving. This is the Porsche I would go for. I live in Colombia, and these cars are 40 to 50% more expensive than in the US dollar to dollar and with exchange rate so corrosive, the $10,000 USD base differential in US, makes around $35K USD difference to buy it locally. Additionally the conditions of the tarmac are deplorable, so the low front bumper without lift option would be a nightmare. And I'm not into big wings, my favorite Porsche is a GT3 Touring... so the 718 GTS is the perfect car for my reality and with the options I would go for, it will reach $151,000 USD (GT3 territory). N/A engine, manual transmission and sport exhaust is my dream car. Expensive here, absolutely, but I believe the joy and pleasure that this car can deliver, worths every colombian million pesos (574 to be exact with a minimum wage of $877.8 meaning this car costs in Colombia 654 minimum wages (54.4 years)). MM, you are hands down one my favorite reviewers in the biz and truly enjoy your content (and Kumo’s of course). That said, I have to disagree on when to favor the “GT” brands. I’ve driven them all and currently own the Boxster 25 which as you know is based on the GTS. I’m going to make this simple, if you’re not going to track the car, do not purchase any version of the GT’s, they are NOT made to be driven on public roads and all sacrifice road comfort for that 5% optimum “on the edge” dynamics that you will only tap into if on a track, and only if you’re an excellent driver at that. With due respect, your impressive canyon carving is in no way impacted by the driving dynamics of a GTS vs GT version of these cars. You just cannot exploit those limits on those drives. Respect you my friend but will have to agree to disagree. Keep up the great work. 👍

louisolivierfortin - my experience with many thousand of miles in a 981 Spyder is that I would not change the ratios. @louisolivierfortin4 жыл бұрын
gjonno I cannot disagree with your last statement. To each his own I guess. I was referring to my experience driving my father’s 981 Boxster GTS a couple of times. Maybe the GT4/ spyders have enough torque to compensate for the long gearing, but IMO the GTS did not. It should have been a riot to drive but it was not. Again it’s just an opinion. Porsche, being the option’s list experts, probably could offer a different gearset for thos who want to shift more often?

It sounds like Porsche has got more high priced options here than a camel has fleas. Why can't they add one more (or replace one of the useless ones they have currently) to tighten the gear ratios for canyon carving? 981 GTS vs 718 GTS 4.0… which is better?
@johnlee53074 жыл бұрын
I would much rather have the GTS 4.0 with the electric mechanical folding roof than the ungainly, poorly insulated, ugly roof on the Spyder, in fact if it was an option on the Spyder, I'm pretty sure a great majority of buyers will add it. It's the same Porsche Jedi mind trick of making you pay more for less features, like more for the Cayman than the Boxster until the 718 gen, more for the T version with the silly cloth straps for the door release which will probably have to be replaced after a few years for god knows how much. If the reason to buy the Spyder over the GTS is that it is a better investment than I think you should look at the used market for the 981 where the manual GTS's are hard to come by and the Spyders are plentiful. Sure they are closer to the original MSRP but remember the Spyders were sold at 10 to 20K above MSRP and the GTS could be had at 10 percent under MSRP. Most of the Spyders are low mileage garage queens because of the roof. It seems like it's not such a big deal at first but I put my top up and down at least twice on each drive, before I get on the Freeway and after I get off, or when I get tired of the sun beating down on my face or the occasional rain that you even get in sunny Southern california. I don't have to sit in traffic breathing in all the noxious fumes because I can't raise the top without stopping and getting out of the car. I don't have to look at the weather forecast before I go out for a drive. And with the top up the GTS gives you a more insulated coupe like experience so you truly don't need to have another car. As for the long gearing, it is only frustrating because you can't rev it out all the time due to the speed limit. I don't find the need to hit the red line on every shift during my normal daily drives and the torque is plentiful at 2000 rpm for in town driving in a sensible manner. No one should be buying a car like this and never drive above the speed limit. If that's the case just buy a camry or an EV. This car is for the canyons or drives to the countryside with low traffic where you can stretch it out without danger to the public and yourself at extralegal speeds. in that scenario the gearing is still long but not annoying at all. What's the difference between shifting from 2nd to 3rd and occasional 4th gear vs 3rd to 4th with occasional 5th gear runs. If feels exactly the same and sounds incredible cause you'll be at the same RPM's any way. PDK's and automatics are just boring at all speeds where the Manual is fun at all speeds, even in traffic. It's not for everyone but it's not meant to be. It's for the purists who are small in number but are ever willing to pay more if they have to for the experience as borne out for the market for the vintage cars or restomods. This is the closest you'll get to a high performance restomod in a modern production car with all the safety, performance, convenience and a warranty. I'd still wait to get a lightly used GTS 4.0 in a few years but if you wait too long you won't be able to find one used either as the second owners are the ones that really want and know what they have.

The problem with the GTS and the GT4/Spyder is the gear ratios with the manual. It’s a big problem. That makes the PDK a must, which in turn makes the GT4 the variant to get, as a track car. The Spyder doesn’t make sense with a PDK, nor will you track an open-top car. Sad about the Spyder due to the gear ratios - Fatal Flaw.
@jensreichert75004 жыл бұрын
There is an after-market-solution for the long second gear on the manual transmissions (in America from 'sharkwerks', I guess). However, that would be another expensive 'extra' then... Btw: the ratios on the manuals are not a flaw - although this is what Porsche claims. The truth is they didn't want a self-made naturally-aspirated competition for their new (turbocharged) 911-992 manuals at just about the same price tag. Very frustrating, but that's the way Porsche does it.
@robertosacchi6894 жыл бұрын
As already mentioned, there is the Shark Werks kit to adress this problem. Btw in Europe Porsche just introduced the PDK option.
@plife9114 жыл бұрын
Fluterra who here has driven the new one? Its still fast as balls even with the gearing the way it is. You can break the rear end loose at 4000 rpm. No problem. And if going over the speed limit is a problem then even a porsche Macan will be fatally flawed🤣
@gjonno4 жыл бұрын
For fast oad use the ratios are just about perfect. This fixation with over long gearing is ridiculous. Maybe if all you do is track the car then you would maybe want shorter. For the canyons, which is where most of us have our fun, Porsche has got it spot on
@randomhawks32324 жыл бұрын
Every GT manual has the same long gearing - even the latest 911 Carrera manuals. People forget these are track focused cars, not everyday drivers to run errands. Shorten the gears and you’ll have other issues and bring down the top speed. Too much car journalism hype on an overused topic and comments from readers who have never driven one. As an owner, you row all the gears, especially on any interstate, and it’s bliss coming out of 5th or 6th into 3rd. Nobody is redlining 8k every gear all the time....time to move on to the other 99.9% greatness of these cars.

The Cayman/Boxster GTS is head a shoulders above a base 911 Carrera, a 911 CS, is head and shoulders above a Cayman GTS. The crazy thing is, these car’s dimensions are within a couple of inches of each other and they drive so differently. If you can afford an CS 992, with sport chrono and rear wheel steering and maybe the sunroof, get it. If you cannot afford those options but can afford a 992 4, with sport chrono and Porsche sport vectoring, get it. If you can’t, get a cayman/boxster GTS with a few added creature comforts and you’ll come in under 100k and have an amazing ride.

As usual Porsche charges you extra for many, many things that come standard in $25k economy car. Wonder how this would compare to the upcoming 400 hp Nissan 400Z which certain is better looking even if, as it appears, is a re-skinned 370Z probably @ $45k. Certainly doesn't compare to my 3LT C8.
@jameswillard14 жыл бұрын
Phil Salley you think the new Z is better looking than this GTS? In terms of performance value for money there is nothing that will compare with your C8, but the extra cost of this Porsche isn’t all for nothing and does have several pros.... probably not enough to 70-80% of buyers to justify its additional cost, but Porsche is fine with that I’m sure as they aren’t chasing Corvette like production volume
@philsalley32784 жыл бұрын
@@jameswillard1 Beyond brand name what advantage does the GTS have? If Porsche could sell 40,000 of these at the ridiculous price they certainly would but they couldn't. Have you been to Southern California? There are 911's everywhere. Nothing exclusive about it.
@jameswillard14 жыл бұрын
Phil Salley well for one it’s a much more timeless design, I know you don’t want to hear this (and will probably disagree because you own one), but the C8 is a somewhat compromised design because of its need to be all things to all people, GM even admitted it when they said they didn’t want to alienate they’re older buyers who require the ability to put golf bags and the targa roof panel in the back even if it required the car to look ungainly for some angles. When you’re looking to sell 40,000 units a year of any car it is pretty much a given that the manufacturer is going to play it safe. Not saying the Boxster is the best looking car, but it is more timeless and better proportioned. And the build quality of the Porsche is absolutely better as it should be for the money. No one is complaining about understeer or lack of steering feel in any Porsche reviews. I still think for the majority of buyers that the Porsche won’t justify the price disadvantage compared to the Corvette, but as I said in my original comment Porsche does give you some reasons on why it costs more. I’ve personally owned and enjoyed both over the years and have been able to immediately feel and sense that the Porsche is definitely the higher quality/more expensive car of the two.
@philsalley32784 жыл бұрын
@@jameswillard1 I don't find the Boxster/Cayman to timeless. The original Boxster/Cayman looks terribly dated today. C5, C6, C7 Corvettes still look good today. The 911 design is timeless although the earlier ones with the narrow rear look much more Volkswagen. My 74 911 Carrera was beautiful with the wide rear fenders and duck tail spoiler. Still looks good today. Don't know if you've experienced the build quality and fit/finish of the C8 but it is excellent plus you don't have to pay 1000s extra for leather or the basic amenities included in even the base C8. How about the absurdity of the 918 Spyder's soft top which pretty much insures that putting it down or up is so complicated and inconvenient it defeats the whole idea of a convertible. Compare that to the C8's power retracting hardtop targa/convertible something you have to pay twice as much for in the 911 Targa. Not sure the understeer is relevant outside of a track and you can adjust it out if you want to go there. The last thing 99% of drivers would want is for a car to be prone to oversteer which can be truly frighting as I remember putting my friends 1960 Corvair Spyder in the ditch.

Get yourself a very low mileage CPO 2018 or 2019 718 and save a ton of money ($30K+). $120K is stupid. The NA6 718s have gearing that is too tall and particulate filters that mute the exhaust. The low end torque the T4 motor offers is much more useable on public roads.

Porsche always completely handicaps those mid-engine layouts either by downsized motors or horrible gear ratios it's the same thing different flavors, to make you go for the more expensive larger money cow 911.
@116617074 жыл бұрын
I read this a lot but im just not sure its true. The 718 is a lower price point car vs but I don't think its handicapped, what is there on the market that gets close to this? An Alpine A110S or maybe a BMW M2C or a Lotus Exige but they all have their short comings vs this car so its hardly handicapped. The gear ratios aren't very different from 991 manuals and in the real world they don't feel too long most of the time. The 911 and 718s are really very different, for me the handling of the mid-engine car is just so much better and doest need to be faster.
