Picked up mine last year after a 2 year wait and could not be happier. I'm sick of the gearing complaints - It's not a problem to me because you don't need to floor it to redline every second you drive it. Shifting up to 5 or 6K is still just as fun since there is gobs of torque, and if it's really a problem for people, that's what DeMans Motorsport is for. You can get it regeared for like ~$12K . The infotainment screen does not bother me at all because look at all the new cars coping each other with the dual screens that got rid of the analog tach and the hvac controls and other buttons for that matter. The trendy tacked on ipad sucks in newer cars too. All of the buttons/switches/knobs have a nice tactile click and excellent feedback just like the clutch and gearbox. All my previous cars were older so to me it's still nice and new and works very well. LOVE this car!!!! A future classic and long term keeper for sure

I went to my local Porsche dealership one day and drove both the Cayman and 911 back to back. The Cayman is superior. The weight in a 911 is biased too far rearward. The weight balance in the Cayman is optimal, much like a mid-engined Ferrari. At some point I want to test drive an older air-cooled 911 or 912 with a smaller engine, because I have a hunch that those are lighter and more nimble with less rear weight bias. That is when Porsche first earned its reputation. If you love a Cayman, you would really love a modern mid-engined Ferrari. Having a smaller engine right behind your kidneys is perfect. I bet the Lotus Emira handles great as well.

The 981/982 (718) have very high torsional rigidity > 40,000Nm/mm - this is higher than the 992 series 911 and as a consequence strut suspension works extremely well, is light and allows good packaging because there is little requirement for the suspension to accomodate body flex (lap times show this well). Short gears are for rally cars long gears are for track capable cars. In my view the 981 GTS (with PTV, PASM, SC and PSE) is a more engaging sports car than the 982(718) GTS, sounds better, right sized power and damping and is lighter. Both are excellent and very complete sports cars but I prefer the 981 (the steering has more feel in the 982). The EV version of these will bomb.

Some misinformation in this video. You equate strut suspension to a Chevy equinox. The 992 Carrera has strut suspension in front. The internet wildly overstates the advantages of double wishbone. Lots of cars out there with double wishbone (eg emira) do not handle as well as the 718 on road or track. Also, this engine has appeared in other cars. Not exclusive to the 718 GTS. It is mechanically identical to the engine in the 718 GT4 and Spyder, with a slightly different software tune that closes the throttle body slightly above 7k RPMs to limit peak HP. The engine is also very similar to the turbo 3.0 in the 992. It just lacks turbos, has more displacement, and certain upgraded components to handle the higher revs (eg wider bearings).

This reviewer is correct: Porsche made a big blunder with the Cayman 718 GTS 4.0. Marketing wise, the Cayman was always a superior mid-engine sports car format with an inferior motor, as compared to the flagship 911, which is a rear engine car. So when Porsche squeezed that fantastic flat 6, 4 liter, naturally aspirated motor in FRONT of the rear axel in a Cayman... they screwed their own pooch. I bought mine in '22, and there is no comparison to the 911 format, which I have driven in many iterations over the decades. As for the 718 GTS 4.0 gearing, I would be interested to chat with this reviewer after he drives a 718 GTS 4.0 with the amazing PDK transmission. This Cayman GTS 4.0 hit the middle of the sports car bull's eye, and all the more fun if not everyone knows it. Not flashy enough for you? Spoiler too small? Prefer turbo bs? Believe it or not Porsche is one of the biggest pushers of electric cars. They just came out a couple weeks ago saying how all electric cars UNFORTUNATELY want happen until 2035 instead of 2030. I live the cars but wish these jerks go bankrupt

2L turbo lag from hell. Good riddance. It is a great loss that the last internal combustion Cayman ever produced is an entire generation lost to us enthusiasts. We will not desire it like 987.2 is coveted and desired. They should've given it a less laggy engine, it truly deserved it.

I'm with you 100% however what if I can't justify the cost?! What should I go for a 718 Cayman 2.0T PDK or GR86 Premium manual? I currently have an S2000 AP-1

I chose a 2017 718 Cayman S a couple of months ago. Very happy. With an ECU tune, it makes the same HP and +100 lb-ft of torque over the GTS 4.0. The tq band is way wider as well. Find them in the $50-60 range.

Go for a 981!

The Cayman is so damn good

I have a base 2017 Cayman 718 and love it. How much is enough - unless you go on track. An ECU tune can get you to GTS+ hp and my mechanic is already suggesting a stage 2 tune which turns it into a rocket. I would however, love to have a 981 GTS manual but as I am in Australia, there were only 10 delivered into the whole country when released. Living in hope.

Chevy equinox?? Common dude. If you are going to mention a GM vehicle, at least say Corvette, not equinox.

If you think it’s sound is not as rowdy that’s on Porsche and it’s bending the knee to EU story telling and emission standards. EVs are less environmentally friendly for the life of the vehicle including the toxic battery

Porsche management hates cayman exactly because it’s too good. Cayman is what the 911 used to be. But Porsche is no longer what it used to be. I’m hoping Lotus steps up with its new acquisition money to become Posche true spiritual successor. What I loved about Porsche is dead… it’s no longer about sporting.

I’m a huge Porsche fan but I’ll tell you right now, if Porsche doesn’t change their ways, GM and Ford are going to eat their lunch with the ZR1 and Mustang GTD. Porsche is going all-in on hybrid/electrifications while GM is letting it rip with massive displacement ICE engines. Huge props to GM and Ford.
