We picked up a T6 earlier this week and I'm just blown away from this SUV. I'm a huge fan of BMW and we also considered the X5. I own and owned many BMW's but this SUV, in my opinion, blew away the X5 in pretty much all aspects. The 4 cylinder engine feels anything but a 4 banger, the safety features on this car weren't even available on the X5 and its just such a beautifully done SUV. This is my wife's car but I constantly want to drive it and let her take mine!

Thanks for this review. Just test drove a T8 Inscription with a tow hitch for every weekend purpose of pulling trailer/motocross bike to local tracks. LOVE this vehicle, especially with the new (and as I understand it free) 2017 software upgrade for nearly fully self-driving capacity according to the sales guy. The 1,400 Gothenburg Concert Hall sound setting made me giddy, the fluid air suspension settings were a treat to feel and watch move, the hybrid propulsion is like a fun puzzle to solve and understand, the tablet in the dash would make Jobs proud and its understated bad ass aura (especially with 21' wheels) rather blew me away. My three children and all grown and out of the house. My next car is not for carting the kids around. It's simply for me to enjoy. I get my motosport thrills/jollies on the MX track and trails. The T8/I could well make me feel phat and happy for the years of life on asphalt like no other. Bravo Volvo! Extremely impressed and getting to work now on my wife to increase our budget a bit to get one in our garage as soon as possible.

When I saw the Porsche 918 last year, I knew it was going to be the game changer. Superior gas mileage with excellent performance is a winning combination. The e-motor improves the torque and the gasoline has the hp. What is not to like? However, the battery upcharge will slow down sales, it's too expensive for what a battery is.... an old tech source of power. I hope it isn't perceived as a bad idea. This Volvo charged 30% of the battery in about 20 minutes. That is clever engineering that would be great for the masses and the environment.

+MotoManTV +Nic Dunbar FWIW, if you live in Europe, you can already buy a Volvo V60 with a drivetrain like this one. Turbodiesel 5-cyl + electric motor up front + 70HP electric motor driving the rear wheels. They claim 0-60 in 6.1 seconds and 31 miles all-electric on a full charge (yes, it's also a plug-in hybrid). Oh, and you can get it in R-Design trim too (which you'll also be able to get the XC90 T8 in).

I want to see that propulsion system in every commuter/family vehicle for the obvious reasons of driving dynamics and efficiency...but I would also like battery to be more like the Tesla for a minimum standards of 100 miles on electric. This Volvo XC90 T8 is a serious contender for its segment...maybe the leader right now.

Speaking about the duel power tech, i think every manufacturer should have this on their road map. it will make better work of the noisy start and stop system in most cars when a car comes to a complete stop at a traffic light or when running at a very slow speed. I think most hybrids do this already but i think it is time to adopt it on other cars. While we at it, can we get rid of the light on the side mirror when a car is in your blind spot in favor of the camera system like the one on the Honda accords
@EricMParkerson9 жыл бұрын
There is a semi-similar propulsion system in my parent's 2014 Honda Accord Hybrid. The high end market spins it to where the electric part is just an addition makes the feel very different. I would like to see similar hybrid systems as the Accord Hybrid and the XC90 T8 in as many classes of automobiles as possible.
@doctorzaius40849 жыл бұрын
I think the XC90 looks incredible and I love the drivetrain; hell yes I wanna see more stuff like this. One minor nitpick, though... Volvo isn't nearly the first to do AWD with a 2nd electric motor driving the rear axle independently. Toyota has offered that option on the Highlander Hybrid (called 4WD-i) and the Lexus RX400h AWD since 2005. The Acura RLX Hybrid has a similar setup, which actually uses 2 electric motors in the rear driving each wheel independently (in addition to a 3rd between the engine and DCT transmission).

@pkradgreek9 жыл бұрын
I would like to see this power train in every segment with different gasoline and motor options depending on the application. If you can make more power and increase fuel economy it is a win win situation for the consumer. With enough economy of scale the cost if the system should decrease allowing Volvo to either lower the cost of the vehicles or add more lightweight material decreasing the overall vehicle weight and thus mpg and performance. Another win win situation.
@ubacow71099 жыл бұрын
I know the car is heavy and still needs to serve its torque utilities , but does it really make up for the twin charger setup? It would make sense if they did some twin geo turbo setup to save space and increase efficiency because the supercharger forces the engine to work harder in low rpms. If they wanted to maximize the efficiency I think they should have just ran the turbo(s). Its awesome none the less, its the most sophisticated suv available, and still none the less it's my dream SUV right now. Volvo has come such a long way from half a decade ago, Damn good for a mommy brand. Looking forward to more dope Volvo cars. Do I want to see more of this engineering feat, Hell yes, always a sucker for more unique and more efficient engineering!

Its a very interesting Propulsion System & got lots of potentials... As shown by the P1 & 918. Do I like to see it in more cars & segments? Why not ... It would certainly help improving the technology & make it more accessible Will I own a car with a such system? In this specific configuration, Highly unlikely... But if I get to choose my own configuration, I'd be very tempted. Back to the Grand Cherokee Diesel & Pathfinder Hybrid discussion ... I'm not sure how to put this so bear with me on this one: With the combination of a Supercharger, a Turbo Charger & an Electric Propulsion, it sounds like a ticking time bomb waiting to happen .... Does the added complexity of such powertrain really worth it over a comparable NA V6 (or Turbo 6) over the long term? I mean, for Volvo, its the golden goose ... It helps em with the CAFE regulations, being a 2.0L it help avoid any Displacement\Emission Taxes (reach more markets & become more accessible) & more importantly ... Reduce their operational costs & expanses significantly... Their entire engine line up would be centered around One Block, share most of the parts, but with add-ons depending on the application ... Just like what the Military is trying to achieve with the F35 program (A, B & C have the same engine, but the B gets an Add-on Lift-fan & a swerving exhaust nozzle) But for owners ... (Usually the 2nd\3rd owner) once it starts breaking down ... Time to get another mortgage? Excellent demonstration M!

I like this car from a design standpoint. The sad fact is the cost of these systems make the car very expensive and heavy so they tend to be put on larger cars. Acura has this RLX sport hybrid (with sport hybrid super handling all wheel drive) I drove s few months back. Boy that made me a believer in electric propulsion quick off the line and in overtaking. Love that the system helped propulsion and improved handling. If the system get lighter and smaller I would like to see Acuras system in a Lighter smaller package with turbos. Like an ILX hybrid or like a the Mitsubishi Evo (which I think will be similar). Handling and power and fuel economy
@exwhyz338 жыл бұрын
yeh, the Mitsubishi is also PHEV with 2 electric motors driving two axels. Only pity is it lacks a turbo.
@marinoint9 жыл бұрын
If Volvo wants to introduce a "green SUV", they should develop something similar to the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, which is propelled mainly by the batteries, and only use the engine when you absolutely need full power or to recharge the battery for long distance drive. Outlander's PHEV battery system drives all 4 wheels at all times, and is powerful enough for most daily usage, thus it's possible drive for weeks or months without using the gasoline engine at all. On the other hand, Volvo can still have a cheaper, less-green SUV that uses only a gasoline/diesel engine, but preferably with a rear bias AWD system similar to the BMW. This way Volvo would cover both types of SUV markets equally well.

Put that drivetrain technology into sport compact sedans and mid size SUV's. Why? Because the instaneous torque is the substitute for cubic inches. So achieving gobs of torque plus horsepower efficiency from the gas engine means fun for sport tuned vehicle niches. Also an interesting way to get all wheel drive with two electric motors, brilliant. Like the Tesla P85d.

In a Volvo minivan. SUV's might look "sporty" (pfft!), but they're impractical as people and cargo movers (I've owned 4: 2 large and 2 mid-size). I've rented minivans while traveling and they make so much more sense. But, nobody makes a worthwhile minivan, not for the U.S. market, anyway. If Volvo made a minivan based on this new design language and with that drivetrain, it'd be a huge hit.
