As a current Volvo owner (2014 XC60 T6 AWD Sport, XC70 previous) I would choose the new XC90 over German rivals due to the probability of higher reliability in the Volvo (though I've had a few issues with my transmission in the XC60) and over Japanese rivals due to the availability of turbocharged motors in the Volvo. The Lexus 2.0 turbo doesn't count as its quite anemic and provides embarrassing performance numbers for the segment. Acura doesn't offer turbo motors anymore. Another strong point for Volvo is cost and driving dynamics. You can get a Volvo for much less than a competing German car and usually a bit less than the Japanese competition. Despite being a safety driven company, Volvo allows the driver to basically disable the traction control and it won't come back on until a spin is almost unavoidable. As a former performance driving instructor and current driving enthusiast, I really appreciate when a car let's me drive a car to the limit if I want to. Lexus and Toyota are particularly bad at reigning in the fun too early.

+glsracer , as a current owner of a Volvo how are the reliability of the brand? I love this car but kinda skeptical about the reliability of Volvo after GM then the Chinese takeover. Did you have any heavy repairs?
@glsracer

Honestly, I still really like Volvo but I have had a huge number of issues with the transmission. Now I think Volvo is almost done refining the TCM software to round off the rough edges of the original firmware. Its hard to tell how reliable the new cars will be with the super-turbo 2 litre engines and 8 speed auto as there is no reference for reliability over time. One thing I have noticed is that the interior build quality has suffered as I have a bunch of rattles that Volvo was either unwilling or in other cases unable to fix. The problem is that Audi, BMW, and Mercedes are likely to be less reliable overall so its hard to completely fault Volvo. A good saying is that Volvo has more character than the Japanese while being more reliable than the Germans (Porsche being a notable exception).

glsracer My Volvo where always rattly, I had more rattles in my 2000 XC70 than in the XC90, but on another hand some friend of ours have the same version as you the "twin turbo" while they had "4WD" electronic problems (I didn't have any with the V8) they had much less rattles in theirs, Notably in mine the dashboard and some nasty squeaks from the luggage cover thing and plastic panels on the side. I had some dashboard lighting issues and climate control unit failing also engine issues (sensors) but nothing with the tranny on the 4.4.

I would choose the XC90. The exterior and interior design is so fresh and breathtaking. Love the T-lights (shape of the hammer of Thor) and the T6 engine. Forget german shit. The Audi Q7 looks like an outdated Volkswagen Touareg :D Volvo rules!

No competition- Volve XC90 everytime. Volvo's overall design is excellent. This car is the benchmark in this class now. It just looks great, with forefront technology, environmental, powerful and safety as well - besides there are too many Merc and Audi badges out there to make them exclusive. Why not is more the question.

I have been doing new car research since October of last year. Last night my wife and I decided on the XC90. I'm 6'3, my son is 10 and is a hair over 5ft. My daughter is 13 and about 5'3. We have 3 dogs, include a mastiff/dane mix. I have driven literally every single car/svu/truck that I could fit in, my single biggest issue being that most of my height is in my torso, so even with the seat all the way back and down I was either hitting my head or there was no room for someone behind me. I am not interested in buying another car in 3 years when my son has sprouted another 6 inches or more. We decided on the XC90 because it combines the irreplaceable qualities of fit, size, and a very competitive price point. I prefer how the Q7 drives, I prefer the Q7 interior and electronics/dash setup. My wife didn't like the seats and the price is about 6-10k more for the same features. The X5 is not nearly as comfortable, the GLE 450 is an 80k car for the same features, the 350 is too small. I hit my head inside of the various Lexus models or again it's an 80k car, same for Infiniti. We could have gone with an Expedition, but we are looking at a 60k car which isn't as comfortable. So why not spend a tiny bit more and get the much more comfortable Volvo.

thanks for the review. I live in san Diego, CA and have 2 kids. I was looking to upgrade my minivan. Given my other car is Mercedes, I tried GLE/GLS. I also tried X5 and new Q7. Yesterday I ended up buying XC90 T8 Inscription. I felt T6 was little under power compared to Q7 or X5, but T8 was adequate. It also provides 14 miles of Electric only power which cover our daily work commute. Couple of points we considered: - We thought that XC90 looked best - Exterior is smaller than Q7 (slightly bigger than X5) - Interior is most roomy - 3rd row is best - Interior quality is perhaps best - T8 has adequate power to pass cars in highway - 14 miles of electric range (added bonus is that free charging at work) We did compromised on brand (friends think Germans have higher status value), but hope Volvo will improve its image by launching better and better cars.

Just bought the 2016 XC90 T6 AWD Momentum Plus. We have never owned a Volvo and probably wouldn't have if I wouldn't have read so many horror stories about the MDX, but we just wanted out from under that thing before it started giving us any issues so we could at least get a decent amount on our trade . We looked at the BMW X5, but didn't want to spend $85,000 for the one we wanted. We also looked at the Range Rover Discovery, but just didn't like the looks of it. Also checked out the Lexus GX460, but it was too big and boxy. We went with the XC90 mainly for the safety factor, but oh Lord, there is SOOO much more. This thing is just silly with all the bells and whistles it has, and the interior elbow room is plentiful for a 6'-3" person. The third row seating can actually be used by someone older than an elementary school sized person, unlike the MDX. From the ability to change the interior night lighting to the multiple pre-set drive modes as well as the ability to customize your own drive mode.....and don't get me started on the looks, they speak for themselves. The ride is so smooth compared to the MDX, and with all the safety features like the lane assist, park assist, pedestrian protection, it was a no-brainer to go with the XC90 . The car has a camera mounted in the middle of the windshield behind the rear view mirror that can actually recognize the shape of a human walking, calculate the speed of said human and stop the car if their current path and speed indicate an immanent collision. Kudos to Volvo...this vehicle is fantastic and hopefully will be for the next 10-15 years.

I'm a 30 year old male living in Norway without kids. Me an my colleague travel by car 25 days a month in our work, traveling all across Norway. We cover more than 2500 miles a month and spend around 40 hours a week in a car. In other words, our car is our office. I currently drive a 2014 Volkswagen Tiguan 2,0TDI 4motion, and in January the 62 000 mile lease will be up. After test driving everything from the Audi Q3 till the BMW X5, the XC90 is my number one choice, bar none. For a few weeks it's been close between the X5 and XC90, but for me the XC90 is the better car. It also being considerably cheaper to lease also helps! Still, if they'd be priced similar I would still like the exterior and interior styling of the XC90 better, as well as the ride, handling and over all feeling the car gives me. Will be ordering my new XC90 D4 this week, and couldn't be happier!

Just sold my 2004 XC90- I drove it for years, then my youngest son and then my oldest son. Great car, but I had migrated to the Audi Q7 diesel which I loved, but as they are no longer offering the diesel in the US (VW diesel EPA cheating problem). I looked at the new Volvo and couldn't believe it. I waited a few weeks to order and will be taking delivery of my 2017 Inscription XC90 in a few weeks. Long build time - literally 5 months! As for the comments on the touch screen and taking your eyes off the screen, I believe there are audio commands you can give for many of the functions- adjusting ventilation, radio stations and the like. And the heads up display is amazing. My only problem with Volvo is the limited color selection - typical European selection- white, black, gray, beige-like and maybe a blue and a red but the later two limited to particular trims. I ordered the Inscription but wanted the red, but that is only available in the R design. At least Audi allows you any Audi color, at an extra charge though ($2,500) or any auto manufacturers color for $5,000.

My wife and i have done the research, we have driven the 2015 Audi Q7 not the 2016 version, the GL 450 and 550, the BMW X5. the Cadilac Escalade, Infiniti QX80 and QX60, the Acura MDX and none of these SUV can sit 7 people in comfort the way the volvo can. The amount of safely equipment you get is unmatched in this segment. The seats are as comfortable as they get and the air suspension is a nice party trick, it also works very well. The only area that the Germans still have on this car is the fit and finish, the Volvo is not bad but it is not on the level of the Germans. The Volvo is a huge leap forward

Great review thanks. I'm biased and would go for the XC90 any day. For this segment functionality and luxury is very important. I have two kids with family that visit so an occasional 7 seater is what I'm looking for. Volvo did their homework with pricing here. With the level of equipment they present great value against all competitors.

I would choose the Volvo over any of it's luxury competition because (a) it's a better package overall; (b) better value; (c) likely more reliable; and (d) has very appealing looks and tech. It's the sort of car you choose with both your heart and your brain. The only reason I don't have one yet is that I'm waiting for the XC60 to get the same treatment as I feel that size would be the better fit for our family. (2 small adults and a 3yr old)

My wife and I have 3 kids - 16, 13, and 11 years old. We have tried it all for her from a Volvo S70 GLT, 4 different Honda Odyssey's, Mercedes ML 320, GMC Yukon XL Denali, GMC Acadia, and now back to another Odyssey. Each time she tries a SUV, she kind of likes them, but the American models don't get the mileage shown on the sticker, re-sale is not nearly as good, and they just drive like big trucks. The Mercedes was ok, then the engine blew up at 63 k miles - and $9800 later (luckily covered by warranty) - back to a minivan. She hates loving the Minivan. We have been looking and looking for the right mix. I have a VW diesel, and we thought the new Audi Q7 diesel was going to be it! But I don't know if the VW group will ever sell another diesel on US soil - only time will tell. The big Mercedes GL isn't very comfortable in back, and seems overpriced for what it is. The BMW has a 3rd row afterthought - not really something we can take our family of 5 plus 2 friends for a 2 hr drive to a concert. So we have waited patiently for the right SUV that can replace the utilitarianism of an Odyssey - but have some class too. It seems like this may just fit the bill. I think we would opt for the T8 model just to get the great mileage on quick town trips - plus I love to have the top model in a line-up. Knowing there is another step-up out there, and we didn't get it because of a few dollars a month is disturbing to me for some reason.

+MotoManTV Thank you for a great review. I was on the market for an SUV 7seater, simply because I have need for space for our three kids, two girls 21 and 8, plus a boy 5 years old. We wanted to remain with the Toyota Avanza, alas, its engine blew few month ago. Hence the desire for an SUV. I always wanted to go for the best out there too, but the fund dont always allow this. I looked for months on the GL350cdi which I test drove for a long distance and was impressed greatly. It took all that we put in and drove in. Reasonably, a BMW X5 will be ideal, even a toyota Prado will be ok. But when it comes to life long keeping of a vehicle we all know that the value of these machines drop down considerably no matter the brand. So i have taken out the thought of losing money in this purchase. . Here in South Africa we are receiving the new Mercedes in February. There after I will decide on which one to put my money on. (63 AMG or the 500, but not the Diesel, as it is quite not that good on the opened road when overtaking is mostly required). The only reason I could buy the Volvo is simply because of its amount of safety features and the new gadgets... on the Mercedes however, it is a car that charmed me quite a lot and also that I wont have much worries when it comes to drive on dirty, muddy or rocky roads with it. Volvo claims to have an offroad set up on its XC90 too. But, I have not seen any review of the vehicle under those conditions... This is my personal view, I am not implying that Volvo is not good. It looks great. But I have a thing for the GLS.
@MotoManTV

+Freddy Lumbu Can totally appreciate that . . . The GLS does have a certain quality to it . . . While the Volvo is prettier. That said, not exactly direct competition from a size, packaging and price perspective. That aside, STUNNED that a Toyota engine blew up on you. I had a Supra back in the day and I had to replace the rack - which I thought odd for a Toyota. We need to shoot in your country . . . Hopefully in 2016 . . . Happy New Year!

I just got one of the last '16 T6 Momentum Plus, in Luminous Sand/Blond. I was coming out of a VW Touareg II with every option but the air suspension. We actually test drove the XC90 at the time, but it was just a bit boring. Our motivation for the switch was twofold; The VW was getting expensive to maintain ('08 Model Year) and we really wanted a 3-row vehicle, but refuse to drive a minivan. The Volvo, aside from offering a brand new approach to design (and being just generally cool), offered many of the same features (plus some new ones) as the Merc and Bimmer for less money. Ours does not have the B&W system or the air suspension (bummer), but for the most part the car is the same as the one you reviewed here. We have only had it for about 1,400 miles, but so far it is fantastic. You would never guess there is only a 4-pot under the hood, it moves out with aplomb. The seats are most comfortable we have ever had (except maybe for my Saab 900 SPG. What is with the Swedes and seats?), and all the elecronic gizmos are great. I will say that the weather and traffic reporting is not great, though. We will see how it deals with the winter, but I don't anticipate any real problems (it is a Volvo, after all).

This was an excellent description. I will buy the t6 because of the AWD. We do have a lot of snow and ice at times and Volvo handles very well in those climates. I had other Volvos before and prefer them over the German cars because I find them better. There is something special about the Scandinavians that I prefer over the Germans. Another great review. I am surprised though- you never mentioned the safety issues of touch screens. Go back and watch the video- every time you use the touch interface your eyes are no longer on the road. They go to the touch screen. Touch interfaces are not designed for automotive and are very dangerous for cars. For this reason I would not get the Volvo- nice vehicle as it otherwise seems to be. I would likely choose the GL450 for its greater room than the X5.

+Jeff Jardine never said it was the preferred method. it's just another feature that's included with the vehicle. if that's a deal breaker for you then so be it. I'm kinda surprised the reviewer didn't mention it since it would have made driving the car alot safer. I suppose he was trying to emphasise the fluidity of the display while failing to emphasise that Volvo leans towards safe driving and also included said option.
@jeffjardine8411

+dabear240 that's kind of my point. They clearly elevated market place preference for touch screens over safety. I like this reviewer but most reviewers end up repeating or at least working off the script the manufacturers give them. Volvo is clearly proud of the touch screen- but I think they've simply made a mistake when it comes to driver focus and thus safety.

Still think the All-Four Cylinder approach specially on an SUV is wrong. Im sure this 4 cylinder is as punchy as a Six. But its not as refined! I drove one of these cars the other day, its just not up there in terms of effortlessness ! Specially the Diesel. Also, i love the tablet style infotainment system, but notice how much time he had to keep his eyes off the road just to adjust the A/C temps ! On a side note, when i spend that kinda money on a car, id love to have some beautifully crafted aluminium dials for the A/C temps! Its not only a lot more practical (you don't have to take your eyes off the road) but there is something very satisfying in that firm metallic click! And to the last question, i know this isn't one of the choices you gave but id pick the 2016 Audi Q7 ! I like the exterior of the volvo but i think the q7 has a much better dash design. And more importantly the audi V6 ! Its just silky smooth, almost feels like it runs on honey! And because its a v6, the performance is so effortless!!

I'll be honest, I love SUVs. The ground clearance is a big plus on bad roads (we got plenty of those), they are comfortable, practical, can defy the laws of physics (who would've thought an Escalade can do 0-60 in 5.6secs or a GL63 in 4.7 or Cayenne\X6M in 4.0) & most importantly.... I think your question is a bit flawed though...Although this is a 3 row vehicle, this competes with the Mercedes ML, not the GL. Volvo does not have a vehicle large enough to be considered a competitor against the GL. I would say the only competitors for a GL would be an Escalade or Lincoln Navigator. MotoManTV

I feel like between the BMW X5, the MB GL, and this Volvo, the Volvo is the best. It is the most innovative and has a stunning appearance. Unfortunately, when someone wants to dish out $75k on a car, they want the "flash," effect from driving a BMW or Mercedes. Volvo is not known as a "flashy," brand and for that reason I think the XC90 is too expensive.

I have watched the launch of this car very closely. Living in the UK Volvo appears to have surpassed itself and has a genuine Range Rover alternative for significantly less money. Over the Mercedes and the BMW and probably Audi Q7 this for me has the class, the invention, the simplicity to make me spend my hard earned cash on the Volvo rather than any of the others.

I recently saw at a Car show the new XC90 T6 AWD and not being a Volvo guy, I was amazed with the level of design of the car. I had the opportunity to compare it with new Audi's Q7 (which was my favorite until the last release as to my eyes they feminized the Q7 too much and now the 2016 version looks just like a grown up Audi Allroad). Also compared it with the Mercedes GL450 which is very luxyrious but still looks quite boxy and old. So I foresee that Volvo will do very good with the new XC90 T6!! It has a gorgeous and distinctive design and the interior is just as (if not more) classy than its German rivals. If I had the money I would buy the Volvo over any of the German Cars.

looks very cool in darker shades, makes the front end pops! can't wait to see more of Tisha's work! You can bet they put the other manufacturers on notice & now they have to bring their A-game next time! yes, the infotainment ... Excuse me Entertainment Screen is very cool & unusual... I like how they went with black backgrounds for the UI\UX instead of the usual awful blue .... Its the small touches & details that counts (as we talked about in the T8 video) regarding your question, As much as I like the new XC90, Volvo's dealer\service here doesn't have the best reputation here & with the new XC being the first Volvo of its kind... Makes me worried about the long term. the GL have to be a 550 Designo (makes a night & day difference in interior) or 63 for me to even consider it .... The standard V6 & Diesel ones are really dull & uninspiring. So that leaves me with the X5 xDrive35 .... I'll have an M-Sport individual thank you very much . . . ;) quick question, how does the Power&Welkins stack up against the Burmester & the Bang & Olfusen? as always, excellent video M :)

Hey, I am a Swedish family man 42y with 4 children and a partner so we are 6 in our family. Today I have a Audi Q7 3,0TDi S-Line 2011 and this car is really great but it's time to change that one in beginning of next year so I have try the new Q7 3,0 TDI S-Lineand with lot of features like Line Assistance and Distance Control and more . I like look outside and it was nice to drive the car and you sit very comfortable. But the car inside was not nice like the line with the fan splines follow all the way in the interior It look really bad in my eyes. And the screen as pop up in the middde of the dashboard take space of your overview out. Then was the adjustments not that easy to know at all. I drive the Q7 in 600km and try to learn things and it was complicated even if I have a Q7 today.The Touch plate was quite ok but the meny was disaster! On other thing as was totally crazy bad was that the third row of seats was very low so children could not look out easy in the front and my son as sit there was 11y and the feel Carsick back there. Then he should go out from the third row seat then he could not open the second row seat by him self becaky thet have totally change that system that they hade before now should you try to catch a handle in the middle of the second rows backrest and that he could not do because the handle was so bad designed !!! And then you have flip up this handle then you should fold the Backrest forwards and then flip up the whole seat and that is totallty impossible for a child in 11 years to do. So I have to do that every time we stop the car !very very bad of Audi to like this . I also ask for the e-tron because I want a Hybrid car but they will not have Q7 with 7 seat because Audi have place the battery pack there instead. So really stupid done or them so why shoud they have Q7 in Hybrid then ? Then you can buy Q5 e-tron instead ! So the New Audi Q7 will I not Buy thats for sure. When we try the New Volvo XC90 D5 and this car did was nic looking too outside and this was really nice inside as we. It was so Clean of buttons and that was what I like a lot. So clean in the dashboard only like a Ipad in the middle and the meny you understand directly how it works. The seats was magic comfortable so many adjustment possibility. But then I show it for my children I find out a problem with the second rows seat then I should open it for my child as they should jump in to the third row seat. A plastic part on the floor as was totally destroyed and this because it was a design problem and this problem will be on all the XC90s then u use the third row seat. Then you fold back the second rows backrest then this hit a plastic part as should flip out but it didn't flip out so the seat crush this plastic part. I talk to the seller about this and he promised me this should not be a problem in the future. But I tell him come we go look at another car they had in the showroom and I tell him I promise u that this car have the same problem and yes it has ! But My children could easy come out from the third row in the XC90. I did use this car for 3 days and the only thing that I didnt like was the small engine it didnt have enough with force as I am used to from my Q7. All my family members did like this car a lot so at that moment I think I should order one but it will be the T8 Twin Engine(Hybrid) R-Design then. It's a really nice car,Thanks

Forget diesel shit. Gasolin is much cleaner and effective. Also less noise. Diesel is the worst fuel ever.
@harrycampbell4680

A part from hybrids, some of the best milage I've seen comes from diesels. They are not just for cars, as trains ships and large trucks all use diesel engines to excellent effect. Clearly in terms of efficiency, there is an advantage for diesel. Can't argue with the noise, although the XC90 doesn't have the most refined engines around. As for being clean, I haven't studies that area for a fair comparison, but if I'm to speculate, gas engines contribute far less smoke.
@yippie6862
@yippie6862 9 жыл бұрын
Liquid Chrome I don't think you even know what you are talking about Liquid Chrome. 1. Clean diesel cars and suv's are about as clean as gas cars and suv's nowadays. 2. Modern Diesels are not any louder than a direct injected gas engine is. 3. Diesels get better milage than gas cars do. 4. Diesel is actually cheaper in many parts of the world than gas is. 5. Diesel does not have to go through all the extra processing steps at the refinery. 6. Diesel engines last longer than gas engines do. 7. Diesels are just more efficient. A gallon of diesel packs more energy than a gallon of gas does.
@liquidchrome8712
@liquidchrome8712 9 жыл бұрын
Yippie I know what im writing. If you haven't read the newspaper, France and Norway wants to ban diesel cars. Why? Becuse diesels are not clean. Its becuse diesel cars are responsible for all environmental pollution and poor air. Diesels are sootparticals, they're not clean. Its dirt with other words. And if you run out fuel, it will cost a lot of money to air the dieselparticles and worst, replace with new one. Diesels are not cheap. In tax they are almost double expensive than gas.

Liquid Chrome Yes I agree, the smaller engine on the XC90 is a bummer though, 2.0l 4-pot despite super/turbo-charger wizardry is going to be short for towing. Price is definitely up-there with the 6-cylinders once one fettle's with the options list.

I was invited to the launch of the new VOLVO XC70 3 days ago, it is a beautiful toy not doubt, but as a consumer, I look for what comes after buying a car. What would be the reselling value? what kind of customer care would you get after warranty is over? and least but not last, I experienced lower quality in Volvo engines that is not lasting long like old Volvo cars (my personal observation after owning the second XC70), so what king of return on investment it is? if the car would fail after 5 or 6 years and you will loose a big depreciation value if you sell, or you spend too much on maintenance if you keep. So you will be stuck between a rock and a hard thing.

question for you MotoManTV all of these toys in new cars are nice, but what do you think in terms of reliability for all these toys will be? I'm also wondering how can they add so many gadgets and features in cars now adays yet keep the prices the same? Where are they keeping the costs down?
@MotoManTV
@MotoManTV 9 жыл бұрын
epiphonedotblack Wow - that's a tough one to answer . . . The simple answer - and it applies to more than just cars - more complexity = more problems. That said, I feel as if we are in a time of development where OEMs are looking to prove out some of these technologies because at the end of the day, it is a cycle. Think back to the 60s - a car with a tape based music system? Or a Mercedes 300 SL - a car with mechanical fuel injection and disk brakes? I feel we will look back and say the same thing about some - not all - of the advancements we see today.

Volvo announced today a new lifetime warranty program for all replacement parts purchased and installed at authorized Volvo retailers. Volvo says the program covers the cost of the replacement part, as well as labour charges for its installation, providing the part is bought and installed by a Volvo shop, for as long as the owner keeps the car. Just like a regular new car warranty, the coverage doesn’t include wear items or accessories. I'll take the Volvo.

Motoman, On your review of the T8, you mentioned how 'not sporty' it is. But it sounds like the dynamic mode of the T6 might give sharper handling. How would you compare or contrast the sportiness of the T6 with, say, the Acura MDX? And do you know if the 'R' version of the T6 will be significantly sportier than the Momentum or Inscription? Thanks, and thanks for a very good review.
@MotoManTV
@MotoManTV 9 жыл бұрын
Jack Woods Thanks for bringing up a good point, Jack. Let's unpack it a bit. Neither are sports cars but the advantage the T6 has is less weight. They didn't give us exact numbers but I would guess about 500 pounds. That is a lot and no matter the vehicle, will affect drive dynamics. As for the R Design, can't comment as of now because the only versions they had on offer to drive was the Inscription in both the T6 & T8. As for this against an MDX? This ALL DAY LONG. Again, a shorter list would be what is better on the MDX and I personally would say nothing.
