This week I tackle the electric motor restoration on our vintage King Supersonic Rocket kiddie ride. This is a 1 hp single phase motor from Dayton with a centrifugal clutch. It needs new bearings, a general checkup, and detailing.

After a few weeks of traveling for work I'm back on the carnival ride restoration. This time rebuilding the 1 Horse Power electric motor that runs the ride. See the project from the beginning: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rqrIm5dtgbd-g7M

I hope he does, and he's a good little helper.. except for the part where he threw me under the bus for swiping nannies plastic wrap.

You are a brave man! If I tore that motor apart, I would have to watch my own video backwards just to see how it goes together. Great video and great job.

If you know of someone who has a foundry, they may be able to do a cast of the fan blade, rotate it so that the broken portions of are essentially have an impression of the good blades. Then have the blade impression filled with whatever metal you need, clean it up, and you may have a new fan using the broken fan cast and good blades impression. Hope this makes sense.

Experience from a old carne. What the clutch does is let the ride come slowly to a stop. If you had a straight pulley the seats will come down and swing into the center tower.
@PeteRondeau
@PeteRondeau 2 жыл бұрын
I was wondering about that, I would have expected them to want to start and stop slow, but this clutch would make it start almost instantly. The problem you mention would only be on the stopping... thanks for the info!

Im sure we have atleast 50 of those fans at work haha. leeson style cooling fan. They still use them today. I beleive it has two flats and a snapring holding it. Idk if thats the clutch i heard but it sounds like an endbell is wornout in the motor. That knarley tapping rattle sound. Some quickmetal or knurling will take care of it. But the shaft should have zero up and down play.. i beleive that motors rotation can be changed if you switch between 5 and 8(start winding leads) also doesnt hurt to hit the starting switch points with a ultra fine point file. And some meters actually can read the microfared of a capacitor. You want it to be within10% of the rating.. but your right. Genereally if a starting capacitor is bad it wont start under load. A run capacitor can though

Yes- 2 flats and a snap ring but I've had no luck finding a fan with the correct bore diameter and roughly a similar size fan. complete specs are up in the video description- I'd be happy to give you a finders fee for a correctly sized fan! LOL You may be right about the endbell. There is no perceptible movement when I try to wiggle the shaft (although I didn't put and indicator on it) However, when I reassembled the motor, the bearing easily slipped into the bore of the endbell, almost dropped in- so there may be some where there. Thanks for watching!

We have one of these it's just the boat version. I believe ours is older but it uses fixed pullies and a loose belt to act as a clutch. The loose belt goes between the motor and a gear reduction direction changer. It will slip to soften the start and the belt will last a few years surprisingly

For that fan I would scan it with a 3d scanner and have somebody repair the broken fans on a modeling software, get it 3d printed and make a mold out of it
