As a kid in the 90s, 500hp was a lot, like god mode. Consider the supercars at the time-- Viper & Diablo were at 500hp. Those were the cars we'd wish we could get if we became rich. So seeing a blue collar car at 500hp was absolutely insane.

It's 2021 and, 25 years after those cars were made, 495hp is still a lot. It doesn't run all over everything like it used to, but it's a LOT of power. :)

Those are 96+ models. Taillights give them away. 94-95 had very narrow horizontal bars. Versus the 3 nearly equal vertical split ones.

The 90's Saleens, I'm thankful to still have mine. White speedster just like the one showcased here but instead of the s351 i got the s281. All the bells and whistles and track performance prowess just without the 351 windsor motor, as the s281's (96) came with the GT motor tuned. Ironically it was my very first car, whilst going to college, and i had the opportunity to have my car fully upgraded by way of Procharger who wanted to use by brand spanking new car as a test mule for their newest superchargers for the 4.6 mod motors. It also was to be showcasted in various mustangs magazines at the time. And yet, as glorious as that opportunity was, i wasnt too keen on buying a brand new car and voiding the warranty straight out the box. And talk about a wise decision because the then new mod motors did have early teething issues , especially with their plastic intake manifolds. I originally wanted a mustang cobra with its 4.6 dohc motor , but upon seeing the new saleens and particularly the speedsters i could not believe how Saleen could take a normal humble mustang and make it look like an exotic. And Jaw dropping it was in person. and just so happen, that Saleens most highest selling dealer was just up the road from me. Sarasota Ford. long story short, the car was beyond amazing. Back then stock Ford mustangs had ok handling, but some real issues when on the go. This thing drove better than most exotics!!! proof in this very review. Saleens were not about drag racing they were about their profession as an endurance racing team.. Track performance. everything people love today but had no clue about back then. people simply didnt understand why Saleens cost so much. Unless they actually got a chance to drive one. The same thing repeated itself many decades later, when Ford finally got the memo and gave up muscle car antics in favor for tuning the mustang as a sports car. Saleen took up Shelbys place in their absence, but ford finally make the leap and incorporated all the tricks that saleen had been doing all along. Starting with the LRA being neutralized in the Boss302 mustangs, drastic track improvements with the laguna seca and finally the Shelby mustangs. The only down side is the fact they waited so long. Finally ford produces the best mustangs ever right at the end of the ICE era. And let me not get into the flat plane crank, and how that shouldve been implemented decades ago. I was reading up on the benefits of the FPC when i got my car in 96!!!. But overall yeah,, Saleen was well ahead of both Ford , Shelby and the automotive community. All that fast and the furious straight line stuff. Fun, yes, but limited. now people know what a well rounded performance car is suppose to be.

Muscle mustangs magazine ran this car with slicks and skinnys back in the day and managed a 10.30 time at the quarter. Trap speed was around 117 mph i believe?

The real question is, why did saleen get rid of the 5.8L output 351 in the next model??? It was like the big dog Saleen being 351 cubic inch to the little dog 281 cubic inch saleen! Smh the next model of mustangs they only did 281's an too mee always seemed to be a downgrade so I always was for this mustang in this video TBH!
