MotorAV, Motor AV, 4 cylinder, 4 stroke,100 HP experimental, light sport aircraft engine.
In 2012, Rima’s aeronautical engine project was acquired by MOTORAV Industria e Comercio LTDA, which maintained operations in the town of Bocaiuva, Minas Gerais - Brazil, where the engine was originally developed.
Experimental aircraft builders and designers were consulted for their input. Other converted VW engines were analyzed for their strengths and weaknesses, and in 2014, MOTORAV hired as a consultant Mr. Bill Brogdon of bmep, Inc. He has over 40 years’ experience in the design of piston engines and is a former Chief Engineer of Continental Motors.
MOTORAV engineers, designers, analysts, manufacturing engineers, managers and consultants worked together to design the engine specifically for the experimental aircraft engine market.
This design work resulted in significant improvements such as: a reinforced engine crankcase, one piece integral flange crankshaft, exclusive cylinder heads, intake and exhaust on the underside of the cylinder head, easily accessible dual spark plugs per cylinder, standard bayonet cylinder head temperature thermocouples, electronic ignition, integral alternator, removable hydraulic lifters (no more valve adjustments), high performance camshaft, remote or improved integral oil cooler, extra capacity oil sump, and features to make the engine easier to install and adaptable to the majority of the existing LSA aircrafts.
A range of sophisticated analysis techniques were utilized to improve the engine design and performance. FEA (finite element analysis) studies were performed on the design, by top worldwide experts in the aircraft and engine industry such as ITA (Aeronautical Technological Institute in Brazil), and Integral Powertrain Ltd. in England.
Other analyses included: Engine performance and optimization of manifolds and valve timing, valve gear dynamic analysis, crankshaft stress analysis, torsional vibration analysis and mold flow analysis. The results of these analyses were used to improve the design of the engine. MOTORAV LTDA, has accumulated extensive background on the engine operation using its own bench tests and aircraft.

Regarding low rpm vs geared rpm, I'm pretty sure that you can run higher rpm with a smaller prop efficiently if only your target cruise is similarly higher speed. The reason for long wing or prop is to have airmass enough to not give like walking in sand in the time you pass it. So if you pass quickly the air mass will be 'stiffer'. Goes for shorter wing and shorter prop. So a sleek plane and motor might well work beautifully at 4800+rpm if your cruise is 250-300+km/h vs cessnaing around at 150. It's not crucial to be efficient at 150 if you stretch your legs at 300. A turbo fan for even a big private jet has smaller diameter than your typical lsa.

Agreed, my buddy owned a Helio once. You could replace the GTSIO 480 (geared) and its big prop with a 540 of similar power but you would lose short field & climb performance.

There’s a hundred likes For ya Dan! I really see affordable reliable engines to be the key for folks to get into home building. I’m not a fan of auto conversions, an auto engine might be able to produce 300 h.p. But on car it’s normally only cruising at a 10th of that. Also some of the reduction units are kinda sketchy. Rotax could have been the answer but $heesh!

Interesting. Similar approach to a lycoming 235 but 24kg lighter for the power. That's a seat and a child or 400km extra range. Or a chute and 200km fuel. I hear mixing metals can be tricky so they want to be on top of that. Shame if it can't run on mogas. Even though fuel consumption and avgas are not ideal I certainly welcome competition and I hope the price will wake up the others. They need it.

If you listen he said 2900 RPM which would be the main reason for the horsepower to weight ratio. The guys who race airplanes at Reno have run the Continental 0-200 over 3000 RPM for years, they make substantially more HP, but they're not long term durable.

This is a VW engine reconfigured for an aircraft. It will be interesting to see if they have worked out issues effecting longevity and reliability. I like the new head design. It solves the single spark plug per cylinder and intake/exhaust configuration issues present in the original VW design. Original purchase price and overhaul costs could be very attractive! Web site states that they are looking for a North American Distributor. www.motorav.com/distributors.php

Except for the beefed up fourth bearing and the cylinder heads, this is a VW engine. I can understand since there is no longer a production car with the air cooled engine, the casting dies are being used for smaller companies to manufacture under license... If they can keep the cost to a minimum, this design should do well...

It is likely that all VW patents have long ago expired as the engine is either based on a bug back to the 1950's, or a bus from the 70's or early 80's. So likely one could make the molds without a license. I've seen a question elsewhere why the double sump is used rather than simply updating the casting for a larger oil sump. Unfortunately the MOTORAV website seems to have just a placeholder and no information. :(

I'd be interested in a few things..Why didn't they "Dowl Pin" the "Main Webs"?? This is an inherent issue with "Main Creep" under power with the 3 Main VW style case..All the Drag Race aftermarket (and guys that run Stock cases do this..it's a real issue) I would also be interested in the "Head" performance..the design (again) has a bad history of cracking between the Intake and Exhaust Valve ports..Does it have Stainless Valve Seats??..Sodium Exhaust Valves??..There are a lot of questions that need to be answered..There is a big difference between pulling 40 HP and 100HP in reliability and part failure (which can be a catastrophic failure)..How many Dyno hours have the run??..I wish them all the luck..many have tried..most have failed..

189lbs ! compared to a rotax 912is at what 140lbs? Is that apples to apples or am I forgetting something, or getting numbers wrong? Hmm, LSA is already a weight juggling exercise as it is. I would have thought a directdrive would weigh less than the geared rotax. I wonder if they have a weight loss plan in mind? I wish them success, more competitors the better, tho they have a long way to go to get a lot of flying hours under their belt.
@brent1041

The quoted 140lbs for the Rotax isn’t a running engine. After all the accessories it’s a lot closer to 170lbs. This engine should be about half the cost of the rotax which is a big deal for most

The whole purpose of a PSRU is to allow for the power to weight ratio of the engine to be improved by allowing it to rev at a higher rpm.
@jamesburleson1916
@jamesburleson1916 5 жыл бұрын
The other consideration is that a geared engine can have smaller displacement for similar horsepower figures, which can save engine weight.
@fredpinczuk7352
@fredpinczuk7352 5 жыл бұрын
@@PistonAvatarGuy Question: What wears faster? An engine running at 5,800 RPM or the engine running at 3,200 RPM? Assuming same output HP (100) on the shaft of course. The purpose of the PSRU is to accomodate a lower displacement, high rev engine to match the max velocity of a prop (ie: (Rotax 1.3L 912 iS). With Rotax and some Auto Conversion, you trade lower displacement for a higher combined weight (PSRU does have a weight to them) for a targeted HP. Power to weight ratio: The only engine that comes close in weight, is the Rotax 912 iS. And the ratio is nearly identical to a more traditional flat 4 air cooled (UL Power). All other engines that uses PSRU are much heavier (159 lbs Viking engine, 170 lbs Airmomemtum Engine). But in all cases of engines using PSRU, you traded displacement and weight for an identical power output. So going back to the original question. What wears faster? An engine running at 5,800 RPM or the one running 3,200 RPM for the same power? Here are the power graphs: www.cfsaero.com/rotax/rotax-912-s-uls-100hp.php ulpower.com/en/engines/ul260/ul260if#2-performance
