Usually, shops are open no matter whether it is Sunday. Shops were closed because it was the New Year Celebration period for Sri Lankans. Like Chinese New Year, Sri Lankans have their own calendar. So the New Year begins in April.

The fruits are tiny because they are not genetically modified to be big for commercial purposes. Wood apple is normally not eaten but the pulp is mixed with coconut milk and sugar ( if preferred) and consume as a drink

Hey, really love your video. The shapes and the sizes of the fruits are bit different than Aussie in here. I know the size of fruits are more bigger in Aussie, but the regular size of Sri Lankan fruits are as in your video. The other thing is that hard part of Mangosteen is the seed of it and we can eat it.

Hello Ryleigh Sri lanka is very very unique compared to any other country. trust me. Within 4-5 hours drive you come to completely different climate, like from QLD to MEL, from hot to cold temp. and also cuisine is very best. Beaches like sandy and golden like QLD Australia. try wood apple drink from a good restaurant. you will ask more. there are so many foods unique to SL, you never get it from anywhere in the world. BEST wishes from MEL.

Hi Ryleigh, it's business as usual on Sundays in Sri Lanka but April 2nd week Sri Lanka's traditional new year. Kinda like Christmas so people are at home celebrating. The "yucky" part of the Mangosteen fruit is the pit/seed. It's edible but doesn't taste as great. The Lychee like fruit is Rambutan and I believe it's not exactly the same as a Lychee. So do give it a try if you come across it again. Buses are kinda menace in Sri Lanka so do watch out in public roads. Nice to see you enjoying Sri Lanka, safe travels!

For all tourists ; please be aware that if you visit Sri Lanka during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year holiday period which falls 25:09 in mid April you will not see street vendors, crowds and traffic. Most shops and restaurants will also be closed and streets will look deserted as people from villages who work in cities close shops and go home to be with their families. You may not have many choices to shop.

the lychee variation they have there called Rabutan is less sweet than lychee and taste better imo so you should def try it if you are still there! Also try the giant prawns, lobster,crabs they have in local resturants as well as street food like Kottu and short eats and the orange coconuts etc
