I couldn't figure out the name of your channel so what I did was look up Living in Japan and you came up on the list of people. I hope your lives have been happy. You two are my favorite youtubers that live in Japan. I still hope one day I am able to meet you. I'm so happy you went to Komiza, and Bisevo. I attended elementary school here...many decades ago. I cried watching this. I used to walk from Vis to Komiza and vice versa, stopping along the way to pick grapes, figs, berries from strawberry trees (Arbutus unedo), and carob pods (Ceratonia siliqua. Your cake was made from ground up carob pods). By the way, Tito was a nick name for Josip Broz, Yugoslavia's president. So many memories...thank you.

The piles of rock are made by clearing the fields from rock so you get arable land to grow stuff... and it's all done by hand. It's a thing that goes way back in B.C. era. So those piles are quite old.

All the rocks were brought by hand, so they could till the earth, that was otherwise full of them. And the walls protect the soil from being blown away gradually by the strong bura wind, or eroded downhill. It was very hard work these people did to survive back then.

Love you guys! 👨👩 There are quite a lot of wine varieties that are indigenous to various Croatian islands: for obvious reasons, there are a lot of Croatian islands to begin with, they’ve been populated for centuries and can be described as quite distant from one another, which explains why they would have their separate local varieties. One of the more distant ones is the island of Vis, the variety that holds the title of the local favourite is vugava, a white grape grown almost exclusively on that island. 👋❤
@sarahexplorer93186 жыл бұрын
Amazing vlog! Well done. I was not aware that the soil on Vis was fertile enough to grow things. When my great grand parents left Vis and came to Australia they had a market garden and vineyard. They were wine makers. It all makes sense now after watching your video.
@electricdreams82376 жыл бұрын
Soil in Dalmatia is very scarce but also very hardy and rich in minerals... and that transfers to anything that grows there including animals and animal products (like Pag cheese for example). You can make a little garden plot go a long way there... but it requires a lot of work in both tending and protecting it (hence all the stone walls). I'd say this has influenced mentality and culture of local people there... Highland Scots have a similar "feel" about them, very similar cultural values, and that includes a predilection for adventurism and immigration. Nature shapes societies and cultures more than we think.

Many English speakers and especially Americans use the words sea and ocean interchangeably, I've never had anyone mention it until we filmed in Croatia. Perhaps there is a stronger distinction between "sea" and "ocean" in local languages in the Balkan region? For instance, see the synonyms here: i.imgur.com/BvDyYyl.png -E

Hey you did catch the jellyfish on camera @ 37:54 ! I remember carob being more common as a chocolate substitute , especially in the "health food" style of cookies and desserts, back in the day, aka "carob chip cookies" because chocolate was too high in fat, caffeine and added sugar. But because it was touted as "chocolate like" it always fell flat of your tastebud's expectations. If it was just sold as it's own thing it might have been more acceptable instead of being thought of as "that fake chocolate stuff."

That's the thing about gravity that I like: it keeps you firmly on the ground so that you don't fly off into space . . . I had exactly the same experience with a little 50cc bike in Crete back in 1977, except in those days you didn't get crash helmets. We ended up going up into the mountains in the middle of the island and then down long, small dirt roads to little villages by the sea. The locals didn't use the roads - everything was transported by boat.

in 19 th century island of vis produced about 90 000 hl of wine, most esteemed white wines in austro hungarian empire, so vineyards extended also to the rocky slopes of the island,, people dig ditches in rock to plant vines, surplus of stones they put on piles, maybe it seems incredible to you but deserted slopes of island were vineyards 100 years ago. For disappearance of vineyards is to blame import of cheap italian wine between 1882 to 1904 ( vine laws), 1. world war and filoxera ( vine disease imported from america). After all that came socialism when farmers were considered opponents of progress, economy was poor so vineyards never recovered

I just found out what scooter you are riding and why it is so slow. It's a Piaggio TPH 50 2T and the specs are pretty underwhelming. It is marketed as a 50cc, but it is a air cooled 2 stroke 49cc engine with a whopping 3 horsepower. xD It has a mind blowing top speed of 45 km/h. I suppose when the wind pushes you maybe. ;) The 2018 model comes with an analog speedometer and a digital lcd display and a usb charging port. It is sold at a base price of 2090€ Fun Fact: Piaggio are the manufacturer of the iconic Vespa scooter. Your scooter is probably not going to gain such a cult status. ;)

I just spent about half an hour explaining my connection, via what must have been thousands of words, to Marshal Tito, (via my friend's father who, in WW2, worked for SOE and used to get drunk with him and also had an affair with his sister... and then via my father who made the plinth and 'fixed' (aka 'cemented') the statue of Churchill, commissioned by Tito, onto Westerham village green, the village in Kent, UK, where Primeminister Churchill lived). Anyway... I gave tons of detail.... War stories about Tito and his sister, (who lost several fingers when firing a Sten gun doctored by the Germans that Netty's dad hadn't had time to check)... BUT... I'm using a work's HP laptop and it has some bizarre 'Insert' function and... after writing for over half an hour I managed to delete EVERYTHING I HAD TYPED!!!Grrrrhhhh.....!!!! Anyway... Trust me the tales of Tito and islands off the coastline during WW2 were fascinating!! (At least to me!)... I wonder if the island off the coast that you visit was the one that my friend Netty's dad used to base himself on during the day, before visiting Tito at night?????

Oh bummer! I hate when I make a mistake like that! In the future you can sometimes recover from that kind of mistake by hitting ctrl+z to undo. I can see how Tito could be an interesting person to study, he had quite a fascinating life. Neat you have a connection to his history! -E

Ctrl-Z?... Cheers!! I'll remember that... along with never using the work's laptop when hammered on seasonal booze!!
