Great test. Marine engines tend to run cooler even at high load as the engine is constantly exchanging heat with the relatively cool river/sea water which will be more effective at removing heat than recirculating the same hot coolant in a loop through an air-cooled radiator. ...that might explain the lower flashpoint of the marine oil.
@rh18603 жыл бұрын
Was just about to say this. An unlimited supply of 40-80 degree water will keep an engine very cool even under full load conditions. It’s also why marinized car/truck engines often make more power in boats than in a car/truck. No heat issues.
@frar.8413 жыл бұрын
For that reason people shouldn’t pay all that extra money for marine oil, regular oil will do the exact same job if not better, and that’s what I use in my mercruiser every season for the last 7 years without a problem, an engine is an engine no matter where you use it IMO

Test Idea I'm a woodworker and I believe that you probably have many woodworkers subscribing to your channel. Blades for planers and jointers are expensive to replace and they don't last very long. There are several different options all the way up to a helical insert type. Many people have the dewalt dw735 planer. It's considered a bit of an industry standard. Power consumption is also a big concern for using a planer and blades contribute quite a bit to load. One last item would be to see if there is a way to sharpen these blades with a commercially available tool. Lots of guys make home made fixtures and use sandpaper. If an engine has spots hot enough to cook off a substantial amount of oil between changes its going to sludge up prety fast. Gm 3.6 and ford turbo 4 cyl are bad about cooking the oil off and destroying the engine. If you cange the oil at 3000 miles they last a long time but stretch that out to 5000-7000 like they recomend and they just sludge up before they hit 100000 miles.

Most boaters use car-oil. They know anything branded "marine" is just a ploy to charge more.
@SuperWaterskiboy3 жыл бұрын
no. the big tests that are important here for marine oil specifically was the anti corrosion/rust and the anti wear at rpm. Think about this, boats deal with much more moisture than any car will just due to operational environment. The corrosion resistance is important. Additionally, boats don't have multiple transmission gears to reduce engine rpm in use.. and so over their useful life see a lot more high rpm. while at a constant speed the marine oil 'only' performed 3% better, the ** about that is when you look at the regular use cases, the marine oil with less wear will make a much larger difference in the long run.
@loysanpera3 жыл бұрын

@bubba990093 жыл бұрын
It's probably a case of not much interest in marine oil development cause you can sell anything with marine on it for three times the cost. Not much different than the "special" John Deere or Caterpillar conventional oil they sell for more than the price of full synthetic diesel truck oil. If it was me I'd probably just run a high quality automotive synthetic and change it frequently.
@jonasstahl98263 жыл бұрын
@@countryfamilyalways7280 Shure it depands on the quality of the oil there is a huge gap between different car oil. A car engine run rarely above 2000rpm at normal daily driving boat engine run often at 5000rpm. So oil run 2,5time more cycles trough the engine means more mechanicle stress for the oil. Evaporation isnt a problem for boats because cooling is way easier when you are sourrounded by water. Same with cold temperatur, it doesnt apply for boats. High quality car oil is probably similar to low quality boat oil, but you dont safe money in this comperason. Sorry for my bad english, I am a little drunk.
@duanesamuelson22563 жыл бұрын
You can use higher levels of zinc as well as other antiwear additives in marine engines. No catalytic converters. Also evaporation at high temperatures is not as critical for marine engines since even running hard they are far cooler than automotive engines. Even when using a water to water heat exchanger they still cool the exhaust manifolds so the head and exhaust valves transfer more heat and stay cooler. The boats I run nearshore or on lakes I have used automotive oil changed often. I don't run for hours non stop under those conditions. When running offshore boats I always use marine oils. Besides..warranty, warranty, warranty lol
