Depends what your running it in and what your looking for. Slightly less oil in a motor especially one with a wet clutch can give you an ever so slight advantage due to less drag from the oil and less weight on the internal parts that are spinning around in there. This obviously has its disadvantages such as how fast the oil breaks down and becoming diluted faster from the fuel. Going extreme on the other side with too much oil can cause it to blow by into the cylinder or worse become hydro-locked or worse. i personally like to run mine right at the full mark because all engines burn/leak oil to some degree and i want to plan for it.

It would be interesting to see how they compared to these other oils. They have a lot of detergency and their make-up is different with higher flashpoint and full esters.

In theory the difference between marine and land 2t oil is heat. The challenge in a watercooled outboards is the oil needs to burn at the lower temperature and the challenge in air cooled bike is the oil needs to lubricate at high temperatures

I've been recommended this video for a couple of months and I finally got tied of seeing it, so I watched it! Great video and that generator test is the worst case scenario because you cannot give the cylinder a wash with the throttle like you do on power equipment. I swear by Amsoil and began using it about a decade ago in my Yamaha Superjet 700. The cylinders are pristine and ride solo, never have fouled the ski out once! Then I began running in my chainsaws and my dad began loving it in his Stihl too! It never fouls, ever! Started his 029 saw with an oversized cylinder from 25:1, 32:1, 40:1 and jumped up to 60:1 to test it! Back in the 90's, you could never get the parts easily and the saw shop modified his saw with a larger cylinder from another, larger Stihl to get it back to work. Settled it into around 46:1 to 50:1 and it keeps on keeping on with a Stihl that calls for 25:1 to 32:1 premix. Same cylinder with the same darn piston and it's been 20 years... It looks like fogged glass with zero marring. I've been reconditioning/rebuilding and recovering old saws lately, the Amsoil always works without fail on saws that used to throw a fit with fouling!

I would have loved to see more oils tested like echos synthetic or stihls synthetic two stroke oils. I run my own lawn care business and have noticed that when running echos red max after a cheaper 2 stroke oil a lot of oily residue will come out the muffler for a few tanks. Is there something in the echo oil that causes deposits to break down? Thanks for the great videos and keep it up!

Kevin Wilcox Echo is really high quality. I bought an Echo saw from a guy a few years ago, who’d never used it. I’ve had to replace chains and bars, but the saw still cranks up on the first pull. I just got one of their trimmers, and it’s a beast!

Try the Amsoil “Saber” 2 stroke oil. Mix ratio is 100:1. I’ve had the same Echo leaf blower and string trimmer for 14 years. 10 of those were using them commercially. I still use the leaf blower to do a parking lot in the fall, once a week. No smoke or smell from that oil.

I've had very little issues with the three I own and one is from 2010 and starts on the second pull. I’d like to see a gasoline emissions comparison between “California gas” and non-CA gas. As a Californian, we pay almost 40% more money for gasoline compared to other states because of it’s lower emissions ratings. Is the gas actually cleaner? Does it reduce engine performance?

This sounds like an awesome idea and I don't even live in Commiefornia. ...I think he's a bit far away though. Most northern states have a summer formula and winter formula gas, where the winter has more off-gassing than the summer formula since the cooler temperatures will reduce that. I also heard somewhere that California's winter mix is closer to a normal state's summer mix. Having visited California I literally noticed that the air smells and feels immensely cleaner than most other places. As a car-enthusiast all their regulations would certainly be annoying (and expensive), but as an asthmatic I feel like overall it's worth it. I want to go back.

@@fisqual The air smells like that because the entire state is constantly swept with an ocean wind. On the west side of the sierra's the ocean fog helps clean the air. But, spend any amount of time between San Fransisco and Los Angeles and you will smell the smog in the air (not always, but you will). The "cleaner" fuel doesn't help. Most of their environmental programs don't have a full scientific analysis. Some hippies just think it sounds cool and since the hippies are now old enough to be the state reps the laws pass. A sincere look into their water and energy management plans would reveal what I'm talking about. They aren't interested in the better ways, just more control and more money, and if they can get a PR person to make it sound like they love the earth while collecting those two things, they'll do it.

I worked at a motorcycle shop years ago, back when two-stroke engines were popular. We had different results with different brands of two-stroke oil. A good rule to live by: If it works for you, stick with it. I had a two stroke, two cylinder motorcycle which I rode hard, even touring half the United States. If a motorcycle manufacturer recommends a certain two stroke oil, stick with it. If you have oil injection, don't let the oil tank go dry. Currently I ride a four stroke four cylinder. I've been running amsoil dominator 2 stroke oil in my 1972 Suzuki GT750J 3 cylinder 2 stroke street bike which I owned since 2006...after a total engine rebuild in 2013, including new crank seals..Only smokes when it's cold ..I think it has a bad check valve in one of the banjo injector lines, but otherwise holding up great so far......for the Sunday rides...

It's a good idea. Having used both, I generally prefer Interceptor as it seems to burn much cleaner. Dominator is tempting to use though because its darker color makes it easier to see how much fuel is left in my semi-transparent dirt bike fuel tank.

I use interceptor as its advertised more for being used with valved engines.My 96 seadoo xp is known to get gummed up rave valves. Might show cleaner burning than dominator.

Every now and again I throw some 2 cycle oil in the gas tanks of my cars, give it a 16:1 ratio and get the tailgaters back a little. Just kidding but I have driven all the way home and not bought gas and have to dump the old chainsaw gas in and honestly it doesn’t smoke even at 16:1. Honestly I swapped plugs late after doing that 4-5 times and the plugs were fine.

Great videos, you have a scientific approach when performing these tests, which I appreciate. Here is what I've found, in my experience: I've mixed my own 2 stroke gas for years, used many different types and mixed them precisely. Trimmers and chainsaws always gave off a fair amount of smoke with any brand, so I would lean out the oil/gas ratio, minutely,, incrementally...didn't make much difference. Weed trimmer lasts me 3 yrs tops, hard to start, run etc. Had to replace lines on the saw, ethanol rotted the lines.. After that, I started using pre-mixed ethanol free, it's expensive but the results were: smoke was reduced 80-90 percent. Starting improved dramatically and it just ran so much better, seemed as if it had a noticeable increase in power. Plus, no more ethanol to rot those hard to fish thru fuel lines. The saw, after 6 years will fire on 1st pull, 2nd or 3rd if she's cold, like winter cold...I'm sticking with pre-mix. . Again, no criticism aimed at anyone, just relaying my experience with pre mix.. You do such a tremendous job of maintaining the scientific method and removing any human variation from so many of your tests but the velocity, angle, and amount of spray will vary significantly in your rusting spray test. (not that it matters in this instance, given the huge difference in rust) but I thought I'd mention it in the spirit of constructive feedback.

I have been buying supertech 2 stroke oil thinking it didnt make any difference (i run rich and use a little more oil to make sure lubrication is never lacking) boy did i have no clue how dramatic of a difference it made! Love the videos and i watch every new item you test and some tests i have watched multiple times. It must get expensive purchasing all these products maybe you should consider allowing companies to give you products for purposes of testing, the way you show all your test setups and results would negate any idea of biases i believe, and you can always disclose this product was sent by manufacturer to be compared normal cost ××$ or something like that. Just an idea to save some cost on all these great comparison tests you do. Also its amazing how you can test just about anything it seems in such a thorough and precise way! G'day, Yay Team ! I had a few of those Gennys, the first one died early (after a month) and I returned it under Warranty, the second one I logged 4,200 Hours on, and the 3rd one was another dud like the first. The Design has a curious quirk, in that because Engine Speed is governed at 3,000 RPM for the 50 Cycle AC (here in Oz), that means the Cooling-Fan is ALWAYS delivering enough Airflow to provide sufficient Cooling Effect when the Unit is at Maximum Continuous Output (on a hot day)..., because such conditions must be catered for way, back at the Design-stage. However, this provision for hot-day full-power Cooling..., means that under ANY other conditions at all..., the Fan succeeds in profoundly Overcooling the Machine (!). The Exhaust Cannister and Engine-Pipe, in particular, suffer from this ; because the Unburned Oil in the Red-Hot Exhaust Gas condenses into Droplets on the inside of the relatively Cool Metal - and then the passing Red Hot Gas progressively carbonises the resulting Droplets of condensed unburned Oil... And, therefore, in the Operator's Manual it clearly suggests that complete disassembly and cleaning of the Exhaust System should be performed after every 100 Hours of operation..., using a 50:1 Fuel/Oil mix. I found that in my case, about every 150 to 180 Hours was a goodly interval, when using Penrite TSR-2...; for a very messy couple of hours, involving soaking the disassembled bits in Petrol, flushing, & poking around their insides with a ground-down Hacksaw-Blade and length of Fencewire - to break up interior encrustations. My guess is that most of these Generators provide about 5 hours of Power per day for 30 days of Vacations or Holidays - which takes longer than their 1-Year Warranty to achieve..., and then when they become hard to start and won't run a 300 Watt Hand-Drill, that's when they're, "declared to be dead" and replaced. Because almost nobody read the Manual to the end, and after a year they can't find it for consultation. Thus, somewhere the Factory is kept in busyness, churning them out, each for a brief little career of making Electrickitiez, before going straight on into Landfill. Also, their Exhaust will literally drip with Oildrops, and if you title-search my Videos for, "Refining Used 2-Stroke Oil...!" You should pull up some videos of how I cobbled up a Rig which permitted me to corner the Global Supply of Used 2-Stroke Oil...(!). I used the stuff for "Curiosity" Xmas Presents, in tiny little Bottles, for Petrolheaded friends within the Ultralight Hairygoplane fraternity. If offered one of those not-functioning Gennys for free, accept it, clean out the Exhaust ; and it will then probably be quite reliable..., but if it still won't go then it's probably not worth fighting with. Such is Life, Have a good one... Stay safe. ;-p Ciao !

@@eugenecrabs3954 Highly debatable topic but, the older engines like my 1986 were designed for the older fuel composition. They have reduced the sulfur in which, another highly debatable topic, lubricates the inject pumps on these older pumps. New engines have different pump design and delivery systems. People have told me their 80’s pumps going out when they made the diesel fuel with less sulfur. I don’t drive this daily and I’m not going to think by adding a little oil to my fuel is going to melt the ice caps. And just because you’ve provided no proof of your statement, it’s not going to make me stop.

I would love to see the difference between the following 2-stroke, synthetic, snowmobile oils: The factory recommended oils for: Polaris, Yamaha, Artic Cat and Skidoo snowmobiles, as well as: AMSOIL Interceptor, AMSOIL Dominator, Klotz & Ledgend snowmobile oils. I’ve been logging for forty years. I use motor oil as a mixing oil for my chainsaws. I use Stihl chainsaws. The two I have now are 12 years old. They are used for limbing large trees, trimming truckloads and some felling. I’ve never had any issues with either chainsaw. My weed eater and blower get the same treatment. Mind you, mixing oil is colored so it’s easier to know that you are using mixed gas but I handle the gas mixing and I only have one gas container.

I can tell you a few things about 2 cycle oils! I own a lawn mowing company for more the 13 years and still run today, we burn close to 100 gals of 2 cycle mix a week. If it's been on the market I have used it. For the last 5 years I have used Amsoil Saber mixed at 80:1 in low octane none ethanol fuel it has the best performance, providing multiple year engine reliability! The one trick I discovered was to use a water separator filter on the output of nurse tank! I have close to zero carbon build up in exhaust ports!! Before the Amsoil and water separator it was a weekly maintenance thing with weed eaters cleaning the carbon out of ports!!

I ran Amsoil in my 1954 Ford flathead V-8. Not the two-stroke version, of course, but the car sure had a lot of get up and go despite being super heavy by today's standards. I rebuilt the engine myself in 1979. Sold the car in 1985 due to having to be assigned to Japan by the USAF.

@Bad Santa it's not just marketing hey, it really actually has been tested by third party ASTM methods as well. AMSOIL really does their homework to make the best oils they can. They use the best components which are often costlier, to formulate their oils to preform as best as possible, hence they cost more to buy. I've been having a great time watching your videos. This one caught my eye as snowmobilers are always questioning whether the manufacturers oil is better than aftermarket. You've got ski doo xpsroyal 2t and Polaris VES vs amsoil, royal purple, Lucas, klotz, etc. If you want to get some serious attention from sled heads (and myself) you might want to consider comparing these. Thanks for all your crazy work!

@@ProjectFarm Ditto on Eric's suggestion. Some manuals require a minimum of JASO-FC or JASO-FD oil so I'm curious of the difference of those ratings in synthetic 2-stroke oils.

What I see is interesting for "daily use" is that the Amsoil seems to leave behind more residue in the cylinder and on the spark plug, which is something that I think is more of a concern for many users where a long term use at moderate power output is an issue, like on mopeds but also on chainsaws. Soot buildup is often more of a problem on many of those engines than mechanical wear.

Dominatior is a race oil. Not advertised as an oil for moderate power output.

I don't understand your logic. Mechanical wear is removing layer by layer in the bearings and the bore, resulting in a total loss. Some buildup on the piston can be cleaned off if you absolutely want you engine to look spotless on the inside.

Bart Vranken well you do want the engine to be spotless inside, flow patters are extremely important in two stroke engines and any kind of deposit may affect that, you dont want the exhaust port to fill up with carbon deposits, and as long as your running an okay oil, right jetting and taking it easy, letting ur engine warm up but not get too hot you wont see that much wear inside the bore, theres people that have honed theyre cylinder and ran it for a long time to open it up and see no change to the original hone marks, and you dont plugs fouling up every other ride either, his logic makes very much sense

@@truckcampertraveler7369 they aren't discrete 0.5 second opportunities though. You don't have to wait till 0.5s to post, you could go crazy and post after 0.4763992s. so really you've got infinite opportunities. Or just avoid that quagmire, and point out that it is possible to reply earlier.
