No doubt an experienced skipper demonstrating this skill on a perfect day. Unfortunately many novice viewers will be caught out on busy crowded jetty ramps with 10-15knt gusts. A few words to the inexperienced, practice somewhere quiet and continue to practice until you are confident to tackle a more hectic situation. Please remember etiquette above all. Good luck.

lol you made it look far too easy John. Next time, make a mess of it (like we all do) and show how you'd recover! I love these videos, they're always so interesting.

@@MotorBoatYachting I subscribed a while ago :) The “How To” video’s really are useful, I am lucky enough to have just taken delivery of a Princess V40 (lifetime ambition!) after having a RIB for 10 years so need all the help I can get! She’s on the of G pontoon at Swanwick so I’ll be looking out for the team!! :) M

Wish I was on the Dart now, it looks great ! I love ferry gliding, the best way to cross a river whether in a motor boat, dinghy, canoe or sailing boat.
@GoneToHelenBach4 жыл бұрын
I saw the title and instantly thought back to my whitewater kayaking days. We would ferry glide as a means of getting from one side of the river to the other without moving downstream, though it looks much easier in a powered vessel and slow moving water 😁

Our sister magazine Yachting Monthly did a great series on this a few years ago called Crash Test Boat: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eoHFZnSMbKeUepY They used a sailboat but most of the same principles apply to motorboats

Awesome, can't wait to get on the water to try this! I'm familiar with ferrying sideways across a river in a kayak, hadn't thought about it with a power boat. I'm also interesting in trying this in our jet boat, which has very poor low-speed maneuverability. Just keeping flow amidships, use the rudder effect of the whole boat.
@andrewryder96424 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I always though ferry gliding was reserved for boats with rudders. Great to see it done with outdrives.

This should be so obvious - yet I've never done it in 10 years of coming in to a dock at our picnic spot along a river. Thanks for the tip! I can't wait for summer to try it out. (Our water here in Wisconsin is a little too "stiff" for boats right now.)

It's amazing that someone can be so good at this as a practical matter, and yet have an entirely wrong theory on how it works. There is no water pushing the boat into or away from the dock.
@davidlewington33244 ай бұрын
Water pushing the boat is one of the vector forces ,combined with some engine power, the net effect is a sideways movement- effectively then, the current (or wind) is helping push the boat sideways
@blackdog82484 ай бұрын
@@davidlewington3324 you don't read very well. There is no water pushing the boat into or away from the dock.
@davidlewington33244 ай бұрын
@@blackdog8248 I didn't say there was, if you both read and understood - it is the combination of two different forces ;-)
@blackdog82484 ай бұрын
@@davidlewington3324 Funny, "Water pushing the boat is one of the vector forces" sure reads to me like you wrote that water is pushing the boat. There is no water pushing on the boat, except the flow directly from bow to stern at 0 degree angle to the bow. You are however at least partly on the right path in that vectors are involved.
@davidlewington33244 ай бұрын
@@blackdog8248 nothing funny, just fairly straightforward physics . Yes, in a current there *is* water pushing on the boat at whatever angle. You change that angle of the boat to use the situation to your advantage as demonstrated in the video.watch it again! Now, there is no water in that video pushing 90 degrees to the long axis of the boat to or away from dock but there would be little point making a video about that...if you get my "drift". 😀
