I'll have to admit, Google maps on your phone is so much better than Garmin or TomTom, Google takes you to the exact place you need to be and doesn't take you down Too many dirt roads. But I can also confirm that the jungle formula is absolutely pants. I used it on the nc500 last week and it did nothing. In fact, after putting that on, I think the mosquitoes liked me even more. I actually found the mosquito wristbands work better. The leather ones that are soaked in some sort of chemical wore one on each wrist. Didn't get bitten.

There is a 'detour' option on the Garmin XT. To take a detour on a Garmin Zumo XT, you can: Select Menu from the map Select Edit Route Choose Detour by Distance to detour for a specific distance, or Detour by Road to detour around a specific road I used the 350LM detour recently and screwed up royally by selecting to long a distance to detour by. Ended up doing an extra 20 miles mainly because I thought I was in a different town in Czechia, but thats a long story

Rich and Ewa, another fun and casual episode. Minimum stress and let’s see how the day pans out. Excellent👍🏼. I know you’re disappointed with the Garmin, but have you tried going into Apps, New Trip and adding the locations on the route you want to take. Or you can state a destination and then shape the route(using the spanner symbol) to make the route go the way you want and not what it decides. I usually plot a route the night before, give it a title and it will be under Saved Trips. Just a thought,ride safe👍🏼

Mosquitoes don't like the smell of lavender, so lavender body oil was enough. I also suggest watching a few videos from a motorcyclist's channel riding a modern Royal Enfield, e.g. Gregor w drodze, then you will see interesting places to visit next time in Poland and beyond . In Europe, cobblestones are not removed in towns because it is a natural speed limit. Nobody wants to drive fast on cobblestones. Navigation on the phone is better because it has the option of ongoing updates and leads through officially introduced detours .

Ticks and Lyme disease are no joke. Named after the original discovery from the town of Lyme in the USA I believe. We've had dogs for 20+ yrs and our current dogs have had ticks constantly this year in Scotland. It's too warm to keep them at bay nowadays. Never used to see them unless we were in the heathers. My wife had a tick on her belly last week. I was horrified! It's more of a fear for me. Thankfully it looks like no reaction for her but you should find them easily when camping I think.

German war cemetery at Ysselsteyn is a bit emotional. Apparently there’s a house with a statue of a young German soldier in the garden nearby, the story is he saved some Dutch children during an air raid and then was killed during fighting and is buried in the cemetery. Also, for the Netherlands, if you go via Nijmegan - remember the WWII movie "Bridge Too Far'? Along one of the main streets in the town, you can find the cemetry of those that died trying to protect the bridge there. Great movie to watch.

I've tried paper maps and different GPS (not the newer Garmin) but Germany... Either Autobahn or through every little town and almost always into the center with cobbelstone and people walking like drunk ducks. The way is to go autobahn to the area and then small roads to where you want to go. I'm not sure they have the nice, small roads you dream about (without going through EVERY town).

Google maps seemed to have improved things massively but as you’ll see incoherent coming episode we came to the same conclusion for Germany…
@oliverkrause43473 ай бұрын
You'll find these cobblestone streets primarily in East Germany when you're entering the little villages. And then it starts raining, these things get slippery like soap. And as others already mentioned, you usually don't have any problems with construction sites and detours with Google Maps because the route data is constantly updated. So as you said before, it's time to get a mobile phone as a sat nav.

We had a month in Europe in July and the bloody road works were a nightmare. There were loads of them in the Netherlands, Germany, Croatia and most without any form of diversions. Google maps saved the day several times. Having said that, when they are repaired they are just brilliant. I thought it was just me that had picked rubbish routes but looks like we have something in common. We picked out the following days route on a map but because of all the unknown road works we ended up having to revert to Google maps most of the time. We enjoyed the tiny villages but they add a long way to the journey. We noticed that some “gentleman of the roads “ would collect up bottles and take them in for recycling getting a few euros for their trouble and keeping the place clean. Many would hang around the public bins and take them from you rather than them going in the bin.

There my revolver got gummed up with dead bugs that crawled into my holster, requiring a complete field strip.Also new grips as bug dope ate them. I've seen them 2inches deep in the generator shed.. We used mostly Deet 70 and 95% or a product called deep woods off in spray cans.. the deet had a particular odour, Deep woods a more pine like smell and you sprayed yourself down .. a bit more genteel smell.. Skin so soft or skintastic ? Was a joke and some guys resorted to eating a spoonful of crush garlic to ward off bugs especially black or sand flies .warded us off as well.. Either way most of also took a daily hit of a antihistemene like "reactine" to help ward off the itches and welts from bites. You do have to be aware if there is any malaria, that you don't want... believe me.. I got it in the Congo, and it went to encephalitis. 3 months in hospital in Marseilles.

No, i dont think we are fans of the Garmin anymore! Its been a constant annoyance this trip
@FxRiderST3 ай бұрын
Garmin is bad if the road is closed. It can run you around in circles. And even worse if you have a via or shaping points inside the closed sections. In the States, there're usually a detour signs to take you around the closed off road. Also, in the States you never know the final pricing on things as the tax is added at the register. Supermarket's food is tax free and in some states clothing is too. In the restaurants, to the price you see on the menu, add tax and expected 20% tip...

We would love to tour the states for a few months, what a massive and varied tour that would be!

We have a repellant called OFF over here which seems to work well. I don't know if can you get it in Europe.I'm like Ewa...Mozzies don't bother me.Are you using the Tread app with your Garmin?

Germany have been recycling bottles like that for years. But you need to do it before you go into shop as often the voucher only relates to that specific Lidl shop.

Get something with Citronella in it, I put one on ankle and one on wrist 🤞🏻always worked for me I made the mistake of spraying myself with a mozzie spray that was 50% Deet ( that’s what s needed to stop em so I’m told , have a full beard n Tash) some how l managed to get it in my mouth tasted like shit and made my mouth go kinda numb 😂😂😂 Deet is the stuff that will take the print off the pump, poor it on metal an it will take it back to bare metal 😂 How did the natural smoker work
@ontheroadadventure3 ай бұрын
That deet is nasty stuff by the sounds of it! The smoking mushroom did a much better job than any spray we found so far

I have had the Garmin XT….now the XT2. They are both pretty bad overall but…I have also tried other solutions including a phone with apps and the latest android auto devices and these also have problems. You need to be getting good 4g for example all the time….your phone will need constant powering, the screens are not as bright as the Garmin etc etc.

Your dinner tonight is known in our house as 'ears and sauce'. Probably best you didn't know that first Rich, what with your particular sensitivities. On the insect repellent, as Paul-67 said, Jungle Formula is heavy on DEET... which is pretty nasty stuff.

Nothing wrong with your Garmin, but in Germany you always take atleast a B road ( Bundesstraße ) if you want to avoid those little cobblestone roads thru those small towns.

A*. You two are turning into Bonnie and Clyde. Keep saying it "Garmin are shite". But don't bin them. When you get home flog them on Ebay, some one will be dumb enough to buy them. I use my iPhone and Google maps with a paper map which I find much better to route plan. I love looking at paper maps. It's old school as well, but there is no better way to know where you are heading or where you have been. Occasionally I use OSM or very occasionally Apple maps but mainly Google Maps. I have thought about getting a cheap Samsung phone or 11" tablet and just using that as a sat nav, but CBA tbh. My iPhone 12 Pro does just fine. You must get Quadlock's dampener though to protect your phone's camera from vibrations if mounting it on a fixed mount. Glad you got your mattress fixed Rich. I too have Thermorest NeoAir XL. Like it very much with foam mat underneath. Interesting set up with a sheet on yours though. I have various sheet sleeping bags in mine in my Rab down sleeping bag when I use it. Nice bike the VFR800. I have two, a gen 6 2004 with Staintune stainless steel exhausts on and a gen 5 1998 with a single Delkevic stainless steel oval 350mm pipe. Both mint condition, The V4 engine makes a glorious sound. The Hartz mountains in Northern Germany are pretty spec. AndyManCam shot some good videos riding around them. Some great riding roads and lovely towns and villages if his videos are anything to go by. The area around Trier SW Germany is very nice. You could carry on up through northern Germany into Denmark and then take the ferry to Norway which would be awesome, but I guess you don't have time on your side. ATB.

We were Thinking to go to norway but it would have been a rush to get through it and back to the uk before running out of Europe days so sadly that will have to wait for another day. We are going to try using the phone for now and see how it works out

I can't believe that you still wear cotton. You should layer your clothes to stay cooler or warmer 😊
@ontheroadadventure3 ай бұрын
We have spoken about perhaps looking at a layering system like Knox use, we love the look of their stuff but it’s not cheap
@Howard17763 ай бұрын
Motolegends in Guildford recommend a layering system based on Klim gear. Merino wool layer, Klim windproof layer, Klim down jacket (if needed) Klim Marrakesh mesh armoured jacket and Scott waterproof. It’s not cheap but it’s very versatile and you can substitute items with stuff you may already have eg technical base layers ( you can get army surplus coolmax t shirts x3 £10) or down jacket. That said I am an expert at ‘buy cheap buy twice’ and it costs me three times as much!
