Sam, great vid! Thanks. Going to upgrade my kit (tourniquet, hemostatic gauze and samsplint). We require all riders in our adventure group rides to have an IFAK clearly visible and easy to get to. And we also require people to have Proper off road gear, boots, helmet etc. To add something valuable I’d say risk taking, knowing your own boundaries, keeping your distance, keeping on the right side of the road etc is profound for safety. The leader in group rides has to identify riders who poses a threat to themselves or others and act/correct/coach/advise. I’ve had quite a few crashes, ditch dives, tip overs but luckily only bone breaks (clavicle and arm). The mental side after a crash with no physical injuries can be substantial to get through. I want me and my riding buddies to be prepared, and you help a lot! Thaaaanks! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🍀⭐️

Your videos are always clear and well done. I will am 100% better prepared for an emergency than I ever was prior to watching your channel. I carry of the the items that you recommend that are within my scope. I ride off road motorcycles and my first aid kit is a non negotiable when it comes to space. It always goes with me and I can’t believe we rode for years without one. 🤦‍♀️ This video was timely and reassuring. I carry everything except breathing tube. FYI your snake bite video was also super helpful. I agree with other comment that using splint for c collar would be helpful and also when this would be appropriate when help may be not readily available. Thank you so much!

I'm not sure there's anything one can carry outside of what's in this video to help with injuries from street crashes. The only real "treatment" for a broken limb is splinting. I guess you could carry rolls of gauze to cover up road rash?

The only time I didn't have my first aid kit and needed it was while going for a stroll on my bicycle. A minute or two ahead of me some guy hit a bump and the front tire of his bike completely fell off. He face planted into the concrete and was quite bloody. Thankfully the bleeding wasn't serious, and after a bit he was able to stand up and only had a minor concussion in addition to the scrapes... but I still wish I had my first aid kit.

One thing to consider is burn cream or treatment. I always seem to get exhaust burns when working on the bike in the backcountry.

Anything for burns like burnjel should generally only be used on small 1st degree burns. Theyre just to aid in comfort and reduce pain. Wouldn't recommend using any of that stuff on large areas or 2nd to 3rd degree burns as they can hold heat in and the burn center just has to remove all of it anyways. Best treatment is cool water for small simple burns and dry sterile dressings for large complex burns

This video looks like it is shot handheld. Those looks are pretty common and I'd say, more standard than the stabilized look as you would have it with gimbals. I think this video was shot by the X-Shears team as he mentiomed in the beginning he was out there with them. In his "normal" vids, as I saw it, he is always using tripods, gimbals etc. 😊

Treatment-wise, coming up on a motorcycle crash, it is likely that instead of a small area with a deep laceration, there will be a large area with shallow injuries from sliding on the road. Would there be anything wrong with tourniqueting a limb with a lot of shallow damage? Thank you for your videos, I know that I appreciate them

Generally tourniquets are only for arterial bleeds eg large blood loss events I’m assuming with lots of shallow injuries you mean large abrasions and so on and forth, which generally don’t induce a massive blood loss therefore covering them with pads and gauze may be better depending on the amount of loss again the more blood loss the more likely or faster you need a tourniquet hope that helped also I am not a doctor or anything so please do your own research and not rely on this, this is only my personal opinion so ask your doctor or medic friend maybe

Nope no issue at all. You an keep a TQ on for hours without any issues. Its best to throw it on, high and tight, if you suspect there is any possibility of a massive hemorrhage. You can look more closely and apply a deliberate tourniquet once you've gotten things under control and had some time to let the adrenaline cool off.

what good does an NPA do without something to move air like a BVM? i hope you answer, because many kits include them, but my training with them has always involved a BVM, and no instructor has been able to tell me how an NPA would be used alone. i really enjoy your videos, i hope you make a kit video for a truck in the backwoods, that is less tactical and more practical.

Because it opens the airway and allows someone who is unable to control their airway to breath without anatomical obstructions. Unable to control an airway doesn’t mean they are not breathing.

If I want to become a paramedic, what HS classes should I take?

In the US hs classes don't matter much other than for getting into large universities. Unless they're ap or other college level courses. Look for advanced health classes like human biology. These are good places to start and get a basic understanding and to see if you're interested in it. Youll be taking them again in college anyways. Also, if you do decide to become a medic, make sure you complete the A.A.S degree. Not just the certificate program

If you’re also looking for things you could do while you’re still in high school to get a little experience and/or try things out, maybe consider getting your CPR certification, volunteer lifeguarding, volunteering at your local hospital, and asking your local ambulance company if they allow ride alongs. My high school offered training courses for Nurse Assisting and Medical Assisting for juniors and seniors. I did the Nurse Assistant training, and although it’s definitely not everyone’s cup of tea and it’s a very different role than an EMS job, when you eventually take your EMT class you’ll have a head start on some of your peers because you’ll already have learned things like basic anatomy/physio and how to take vital signs, and you’ll already have some experience talking to, interacting with, and being “hands on” with patients, which are priceless because you can’t learn those things from a textbook lol. Also, find what study methods work well for you, and start making good study habits now. Medic school will have you learning lots of info in what will feel like a very short amount of time, so you won’t regret already having solid study habits in place. Anyway, those are just some ideas to consider looking into, definitely not required for anything. You can absolutely walk into your EMT class with no healthcare related experience and have no trouble at all totally killing it :) In EMT and medic school, study hard, practice practice practice, ask for help if you need it, make or join a study group, have confidence in yourself, remember your “why,” and have fun. Personally, I would toss out the NPA. If someone is unconscious after a bike accident, I'd rather not risk tossing in an NPA and injuring the brain. The risk of head trauma being present is too high and I'm happy to hold a jaw thrust after I get hemorrhaging under control. Paramedics can handle everything else from there. TBH you could get by with a few TQs and some gauze. Airway and breathing interventions are probably not going to be needed unless there was some kind of penetrating trauma. In which case, the best you're gonna do is a chest seal since I doubt civilian first responders want to take on the liability of darting someone with a pneumothorax.

Decompression needles are a dangerous thing to carry in a non professional setting. Using one off duty generally constitutes practicing without a license as you don't have standing orders permitting you to do that. That being said, if its family or a friend who is not gonna sue you if you mess it up, and they need it, you're gonna do what you gotta do. As far as using it on a stranger, I'm not doing it.

I have a problem with the NPA. You are a trained EMT so it’s OK for you to carry it but I’m not and VERY VERY few others are trained. If I carry it and some dumb mouk who thinks he knows how to use it causes harm I’m an MORALLY responsible for the damage he does. So where am I wrong in saying if you are not trained don’t carry it.

He has a product that he sells and I have told him I disagree with his choice of TQs. He asked if I would do a series of videos for him talking about different medical items and how to utilize them. In the TQ portion video I used CAT TQs and not the RECON. To be clear though, the RECON is not a fake CAT, it does not bill itself as one or try to pass as a CAT. I hate it and I am glad they went out of business but a counterfeit and a bad TQ are two separate things.
