Hi Richard, I just wanted to come here to say thank you so much for your videos. I just passed my mod2 (in Poole) today with 0 minors (third time the charm) and I have to say your videos really helped me to understand some things I didn’t have very clear or I didn’t know how to react to them out on the road. Very grateful for your channel!

Thanks Richard. Really helpful. I have a question about lifesavers. At 17:04 for instance you use mirrors only. This is a move off from a stopped position where you have had your foot down for a while. There are other instructors on YT and also my own previous instructor who would insist on a lifesaver left & right here. There are also instructors who advocate a lifesaver when changing position in lane for instance from pos 2 to 3 in prep for a right turn followed by another just before the turn is executed. Would really appreciate your thoughts on this as I'm heading for my mod 2 and find some information a bit contradictory depending on where you look.

Hi Phil. Other than the lifesaver just before you commit to the right turn, no others are required in the scenarios you've mentioned, only mirror checks. The lifesavers you have been taught are very old school and there's nothing wrong with them per se and you will pass with or without them. But doing lifesavers every time you pull away just delays things unnecessarily. They're not shown in the official DVSA guide books nor are examiners looking for them on test. The one before moving from 2 to 3 on a major / minor right turn is a consideration depending on how wide the road is. The majority of roads are not wide enough to justify them. But if in doubt, lifesaver! Best of luck. 👍😊

@@Lets-rideUk thanks Richard - that's really helpful. I do find the whole lifesaver thing very subjective at times. The DVSA guide says that rear observation is a combination of mirrors and shoulder check and that rear obs in busy urban areas is normally essential for moving off, turning left or especially right, slowing/stopping and so on. I get your point re changing position within lane and also there is a safety consideration at higher speeds meaning that looking backwards can be risky, but I do find the DVSA advice slightly vague at times. I wonder also if different examining teams might approach this differently on test in different areas of the country - no system can be completely uniform I guess, and we don't yet have VAR for mod 2🤣. Thanks again for your work - it's really helpful.

Hi Richard. Great video, as always. A quick question ... At 24:44 you enter traffic lights. I'm imagining there was some oncoming traffic - some going straight on and some waiting to turn right. You would then have to wait for clear road before you could turn right. Where would you aim to position yourself in relation to the oncoming traffic that's turning right? Thanks!
@Lets-rideUk

Although it's generally considered safer to turn tail to tail, or right side to ride side, everyone turns nose to nose, or left side to left side. So we usually go with that. See Highway Code Rule 181. 👍😊

Hi Richard , another fantastic lesson. My instructor goes mad if I don’t do a left shoulder check before a left turn, are they really necessary for the mod 2? Cheers.

Hi Richard I am about to start my direct acess course, I've watched all your tutorials and learnt so much from them to become a safer rider,infant I would go onto say you've probably saved a few lives with your teaching so thankyou for that,just one question Richard wich I am a little confused about, after watching this upload and that is turning left from a major road to a minor road,on this you mentioned to take the command position 2, is that right or should it be 1st position, just after watching a few other people's uploads they direct you to take the 1st position, I understand if it was a junction to turn left you would take 1st but confused wich is right for turning into side roads,thxs again for all you guidance Richard,very much appreciated.kind regards Chris.

You're very welcome Chris. Position 1 on the approach to a left turn major / minor is very old school and nothing wrong with it per se. The more modern approach is to stay in position 2. Either way is fine for test though. 👍

Thxs Richard, I think I will stick to position 2,as you demonstrate, I was riding home from work today and took position 1 as I thought was right ,but this encouraged a white van man ti overtake me as I was in position, it was a close call,at least position 2 commands the turn,thankyou.

If you take mod 2 in an area you’re not familiar with is it ok to stop at all the junctions as on approach you will not know if they are blind or visible junctions.
@Lets-rideUk
@Lets-rideUk Жыл бұрын
If you can't see clearly as you approach then yes, best to stop. But if you have a clear view as you approach and it's safe to proceed then the examiner will be expecting you to. 👍

Hi Richard, I have my mod 2 test coming up in Poole in January, when you pull off from a stop position let’s say at a traffic light which was red now turned to green, do you only have to check your mirrors? Or should you do both shoulder checks as well?
@Lets-rideUk
@Lets-rideUk Жыл бұрын
Just mirrors. 👍

When you come to the end of a road do you always put your left foot down and right on rear break, my instructor tells me to do this but when I'm turning right at the end of a road it feels really uncomfortable and prefer the right foot down, cheers
@Lets-rideUk
@Lets-rideUk 3 ай бұрын
Either foot or even both feet is fine. We recommend left foot down right foot up as it's easier for hill starts with the rear brake, but if you're on a level surface or can do hill starts with the front brake then it's no drama. 👍

Really useful videos once again Richard. Do you always check both mirrors every time or can you just do the right hand one say if more appropriate?
@Lets-rideUk

Hi David. There are definately scenarios where right hand mirror only is fine - moving out for parked cars being the most common one. Same with a cyclist. 😊👍
