This whole episode was a 2 hour infomercial for Raver App. They talked about how bad the motorcycle proprietary apps were & how great is the Raver.. seriously first time I can say that after watching a show I didn’t learn anything new & usually I always feel I have learned so much from this channel.

Just starting this. I hope you pushed the Rever guy to explain some of the longstanding bugs that make it frustrating to complete a trip! Extremely risky to use for a long trip where data access may go away (even if you've downloaded the map, the app seriously misbehaves, often leading to losing entire trip progress.)

I used Rever Pro for one big trip with high hopes for offline navigation. There were plenty of bugs with map downloads and it was very disappointing. It's way worse/clunkier than I expected. They need to fix it.

Seriously. The REVER app is a nightmare to use (unintuitive and full of bugs). My favorite apps at the moment are GIAGPS and Scenic.

@@dickiemcgeezacks9458 the amount of times Calimoto has led me around in circles for a myriad of dumb reasons is honestly embarrassing. I love planning trips with it, but actually navigating has me screaming at my phone more than riding.

@@FluxApex - That is what a real old-school paper map and a compass, is nice to have. Then you don't have to die. And can live instead. But you have to put in some effort to learn to use a map and compass. And that is maybe to much, when it is only for not dying.

Young guy here at 26 years old. The memory game and tape on the gas tank are still my preferred methods to navigate. If I forget the name of a turn it takes ten seconds to pull over, look, and get back on the road, and the puzzle of figuring oht where I'm going is super fun personally

Being an old Beezer rider, I believe "V" stands for "Vertical", not "Vee". So, the V-Strom now has the correct engine.

What a pity! Because I also believe that strom could’ve been derived from the Swedish word ström for stream or flow. P-Stream would’ve been a good fit and an icebreaker especially for the more aged adv crowd.

When is Rever or someone going to make a dedicated smartwatch moto maps app? It seems like a pretty logical solution for leaving your phone in your pocket, not having to deal with a mount and still being visibly accessable while riding.

I'll vote for the P-Strom name. I'm more likely to buy a Royal Enfield but waiting for the 650 Himalayan. Looked at a V-Strom 650 but it was $18,000 (Argentina has huge import taxes). Royal Enfield built an assembly plant near Buenos Aires to avoid most of the taxes.

Fun topic! I continue to use a Garmin GPS. I used my phone on a trip through AZ and the constant direct heat from the sun after a few hours of riding along with the internal heat generated from constant GPS use triggered the built-in heat protection on the phone and it shut itself down. I had to ice the phone to bring it back to life to see where I needed to go. I use a cheap Garmin that I DIY'd to be more weatherproof with silicon caulking, (borrowed idea from something I saw on YT.) I also had my phone camera die from the vibration issue. Hoping the Quad Lock with dampener will help prevent that from ever happening again.

I only ever use the directions through headphones. I only do that when I'm completely lost, need to rush home, or need a petrol station. I've learnt so much about the UK by just recognising road numbers and town names. Even looking where the sun is can help you find your way home. Some rural areas don't have 24/7 petrol stations, and no phone signal, which can make things pretty hairy. To this day I've never been stranded, but have often cheered in my helmet when I find that open petrol station on a sunday night

In my experience, gps does an excellent job of telling you where you are, mediocre job of picking routes. My classic example is crossing north west Montana. Any app will tell you to take I90, maybe Highway 2, but will miss Highway 200 (which is a good ride) and completely miss the most excellent Going To The Sun through Glacier NP. Therefore, when touring unknow country, I like to use a paper map to figure things out, plan my day. Figure out the interesting looking roads, not just the most direct or fastest. Then use an app / gps to track my progress. This also keeps the map handy for taking notes... took pictures here, that was cool, next time try that road, never ever go this road again.... makes a nice keepsake for later. "I read maps for fun..." Amen.

I don’t get impressed easily, but I have to say REVER has impressed me. I tried the free version and within a day - pro! Not because the pro is so much better but because the access to alternative maps. I found roads that I remember as a kid that aren’t on any modern map but they show up on REVER. I love the ability to precisely plan your trip point to point even when the roads are closer to single track than highway. I also love the AI that let’s you avoid highways /tolls/ or find twisty roads. (I’d like one that finds open gas stations) I’m an IT guy and to say I’m frugal when it comes to buying apps is an understatement but I have dozens of planned rides for several of my vehicles and REVER is th e sole reason I did them. Most of these routes are very remote off-road. I also track any long or fun rides that aren’t pre planned. Then I just share them with friends. It is easy, accurate, fun and great for a group. Other than a few crashes on computer no issues, I highly recommend it to my friends all the time. Great job on a great app.

great episode cheers team revzilla (and rever!) regarding bike navigation, I used to mount my phone on the bars and was extremely pleased with the experience of having google maps on a nice big screen right in front of me. i found the ability to preview the curvature of the road ahead (on a twisty unknown road) extremely useful i.e when you can see round a corner and it turns out to be a decreasing radius corner (tighens up midway) you can see it ahead of time on the map. This system worked great for a few months until it broke the camera module in my phone - the vibrations had damaged some of the image stabilisation kit which has put me off the idea ever since. Since then i've bought a "beeline moto" minimal navigational device, which as mentioned shows the bare minimum for navigation. It's nice and minimal, but it doesnt show the curvature of the road ahead, and also it doesn't currently notify me of an upcoming speed camera or police or roadworks (which google maps does do). Using the beeline is definitely a more simple may of navigating and i feel it is more conducive to just 'going for a ride' and getting lost

I've installed a motorcycle specific CarPlay/Android Auto unit on my 2017 BMW F800GS Adventure. Runs off the bikes battery. It's IP-68 dust and water protected. Bright screen. Works with all but the thickest gloves. Includes a RAM type mount. Pairs with my Sena so I can stream music, hear turn by turn directions, make and receive phone calls and more. It is inexpensive at less than $170 shipped. I can keep my phone safely tucked away in my pocket with a magsafe battery pack to keep it charged. Found out about it on ADVRider's October email newsletter. It's from Maxca which have a store on AliExpress. Model is Maxca Xplay Lite C5. I don't have a ton of time on it yet so can't provide a long term review but I already like it way better than my Garmin Zumo 595LM that I took off the bike and the screen responds better than either my iPhone or Android phone do with gloves on. As stated the normal nav apps like Apple Maps, Google Maps, Waze work with it. Also the apps like Rever, OnX Offroad and Gaia also work with it. Spurg mentioned he likes Guru Maps Pro...I also use it and they are working on adding CarPlay in the near future. I've been enjoying for HSLS episodes for a while now. Keep up the great work!

Per the best bike for the long trip issue.. Just watched itchyboots go from pategonia to alaska on a CRF300L.. seemed like the bike was right for the job.. she never barnstormed, just explored.. one of you guys mentioned highways, wouldn't you generally be trying to avoid those anyway?.. lol.. being able to pick back up my laden bike all by myself would absolutely be my #1 consideration and some 500lb beast just would no be the ticket for a solo trip..

I'm from Vegas, a couple months ago I switched from phone app (Gaia and Locus maps) to a zumo for street riding. (Off road I still like better locus map) Problems here with phone and phone mount is over heating and phone shutting down, as you probably know summer can be brutal in Vegas or going to AZ even southern UT. Also I find it a bit easier to prep a route with gas stop /time/ mileage. With Basecamp (watched a bunch of tutorial to get used to it..) I still used locus map for tracking most of the time. Having both, dedicated gps and app on phone , to me is the best.

I don't ride offroad. I do take coast to coast trips and tons of IBA rides annually. Google Maps on an Android phone. I can create routes and save them as quick links on the home screen of my phone. I download offline maps for my routs just in case. Recently, I purchased a stand alone wireless Android Auto unit for my bikes. I have taken 9 IBA rides since I purchased it in a plethora of weather types. 0 issues. it connects to my earbuds or my helmet setups without issues so I can get voice navigation and music which can be controlled from the unit connected to my Spotify. I have tried Rever and Calimoto and a few other apps and stand alone GPS units, but this by far, is the best combination I have used.

I tried Rever a couple years ago when Rider magazine started working with them. I live in an area with poor internet (Viasat satellite) and the performance was poor and the cost was something like $5/month for a product I would use a couple of times a year. So, I stick with Basecamp which works without an internet connection and interfaces well with my Garmin devices. If Rever worked offline and cost maybe $10/year, I might reconsider.

I have used Rever for several 2000+ mile trips. It's incredible. I use it to plan the route, then use a highlighter and paper map to mark the roads. I like the road knowledge of Rever, but the constant presence of a device on my bars or bag detracts from the ride, I think.

One use for a dedicated GPS that saved me on a dual sport ride in Mammoth Lakes a couple years ago: I was out of gas, and put the spare one-liter bottle into the tank of my 500 and soon came to a paved road. I had the presence of mind to search for gas stations, and my Garmin showed me one about 12 miles away, if I turned right, and then left at a T-junction. Barely made it, even had to lay bike on its side to shift gas over to the other side of the tank after it stalled out. Not sure if any apps would do that, but maybe they do now?

Question for REVER if I missed it, can I pre set routes that won't change? I get so frustrated making a map on google maps, send it to my phone, and then it defaults to taking the 4 lane highway, which I'm definitely not trying to do. Does that exist on your platform?

I am about same age as you guys. All my life I have taken shit from my dad about how bad I was at navigating around, and probably could get lost in a rotating door! He always knew where he was going and so on, he was good at it! Now he has a GPS, and uses it everywhere! I don't have a mount for my phone, in the car, or the motorcycle, and I only use GPS if I have to go do a new city I havent been, and there is a lot of navigating, as cities can be confusing sometimes with one way roads and stuff. I go without my GPS, I look at a map, often check out a few places on google streetview - and he blindly follows his GPS and get worse and worse as the years go on, and it's not just the getting older!

Greetings to Spurgeon and Zach, I am listening to season six episode eight about Moto navigation. Your guest star.. just said, and I quote, “the phones are so powerful nowadays I haven’t used a dedicated GPS device in like eight years” Well… That may be all well and good for you guys living in the lower 48. But I can well imagine that the people living in Alaska or even living in Canada where I do on the extreme north end of Vancouver Island (please look it up on a map) we don’t always have a cell signal. In fact, when I leave Port Hardy headed for Campbell River, I get two very short pings on my phone as I am getting close to another community, but other than that there is nothing for over two hours of highway travel. Now, if I am out on my ADV bike on the logging roads in the area I have zero signal. Yes, I could download it to the phone and everything but I’m 65… Download?! Therefore, if I am using an app, I have zero map, hence my Garmin Zumo XT. Enough of that, love the podcast… Been trying to get caught up on back issues starting from the first one. I think I’m up to season four episode two or three. Keep up the good work.

One place where Calimoto is better than Rever is how it automatically shows where, on the map, a photo was taken. In Rever, you just have an album, but they aren't a teacher to the spot where it was taken. Unless I missed the feature.

Have to slightly disagree with you guys on the Garmin versus phone. I use my Garmin Zumo 396 to follow ADV tracks. I tried a whole bunch of apps to navigate GPX tracks but had the same issue. I kept missing turn offs because I couldn't see the screen and couldn't tell if the road I was passing at the moment was the one I needed or was still further up. Made for a lot of u-turns. Maybe it's my over 60s eyes or whatever, just does not work. I rarely miss turnoffs with my 396, and since I lead a lot of beginner ADV routes, u-turns are a big issue. I can download GPX files wirelessly straight from my phone to the 396, and it never let's me down.

I think modern navigation has it's place, but it also produces a dependency on the tech rather than developing your own wayfinding skills. I see way too many folks staring at their gps while riding, rather than paying attention to the trail and what is around them. I personally enjoy doing a little ride planning for segments, and then just ignoring anything other than a basic compass and my surroundings until I next need to plan the following segment.

Yes, an iphone will tell you your GPS location with no cell service in Airplane mode but it won't display the surrounding map info unless you downloaded the area prior! Sadly I still need my Garmin for most trip as I don't want to download maps for every area I ride. Here's a good explanation: "The point is that there is no need for any cell tower nearby for a GPS receiver (or smartphone) to receive this satellite data - the cellular system is not involved in receiving that data or calculating the location fix from that data. Now, if you want to display that calculated location on a map, then you can use either a stand-alone GPS receiver or smartphone with pre-loaded maps (so no need for an nearby cellular system) or a modern smartphone that downloads the map dynamically from a web site (the smartphone then needs a cellular system nearby, of course)."

Pent-up frustration being released in 3..2..1..Rever's route planning is fantastic. But it absolutely falls on its face while navigating. The zoom is all over the map to the point the arrow won't even stay on your screen. I've tried to use it for over 2 years and I'm at the point where I'm no longer willing to waste my money for a product the developers have no interest in fixing. Either fix it once and for all or stop charging people to use it. Otherwise great episode as usual.

It'd be nice if Rever would work a deal with BMW to have it work with the BMW TFT. There are a ton of GSs out there that would benefit. Also, as far as Apple maps, I used to use Waze and it's become an unstable POS in Carplay. It freezes, goes black, won't reorient, etc. Even when it does work, it often makes really stupid routing decisions. Apple maps is better overall at this point.

I met a guy from Wyoming years ago, Chad, he said he hoped summer came on a weekend so he could go fishing. Zack, not sure its, as they say, P.C. to say you "douched" off your chain. Everyone should have a friend like Spurge! B.T.W. Spurge still waiting on your permission to start the B.O.S. (Buds of Spurge) R.C., just sayin! EICMA (Esposizione Internazionale Ciclo Motociclo e Accessori) or in loosely translated English, International Motorcycles and Accessories Exhibition (which I realize isn't EICMA). Suzuki if you're listening, and we know that you are lol! The GSX8X and the new Hornet look like Duke rip offs, design departments are getting lazy. No such thing a lost you're just going on an unexpected journey. "We could panic of course, but what good would that do" - Wodehouse I like to get out and ride as well but the worlds largest spoon collection is spectacular and should not be missed! My bike came with a powered mount for a Garmin on the handlebars so I like to have that for the map and use my phone and cardo for the turn by turn in the helmet. Apple sux that why you don't use carplay! I would recommend painters masking tape over duct tape for those sleeve directions, your gear will thank you. First thought was BWM 1250 GS, but maybe the 1150 not sure. Once they ruled out ADV's I thought maybe the R1200C, rare bike so it would be hard to guess. Levi its easier to get forgiveness than permission, get the bike and damn the torpedoes! I think Spurge nailed it with the KLR as the seats on those dirt bikes are not conducive for long rides. I'm leaving with the REVER app. Despite the comments I'm still willing to give it a try. RIDE ON!

Good reminder - I almost forgot to cancel Rever before my subscription re-upped. I bought it last year and I kept bringing the app up and looking but I honestly never used it. I think in Michigan and a lot of the midwest there just aren't that many options for places to go, no public land, etc. If I ever have a bike trip somewhere else I may re-up.

The DNR has a good map that marks what public land can be used. Just look up "Michigan DNR ORV map" or something to that effect. After that, just mark locations on Google maps. However, if you live south of the bay, you're not going to find anything. There's almost nothing at all in terms of trail riding down there.

@@nicholasc1781 I live in the Ann Arbor area. According to the DNR, I have to go to Gaylord or close to it, which is like 175 miles, to get to any accessible public land. We have a TON of public land where I live - hundreds and hundreds of miles of trails - as long as you're on foot, bicycle or horse.

I just pulled up the app for the first time in months and there's not a single curated track within 200 miles of where I live. Like 2 in my entire state, way up in the corner. Unfortunately this is pretty much standard for Michigan, there's no help for motorcyclists here, we're just pretty much on our own.

@@John_Ridley even in terms of dealerships. Up north dealerships stock either dirtbikes or cruisers. You'll be very lucky if they stock anything other than dirt gear. If they do have street gear it's cheap Chinese crap. I think that there is a lot of good riding in Michigan you just really have to sniff it out. I plan on trying to submit some routes to the app if I've got the time next season.

I feel like the Transalp would be closer to stepping on the Africa Twins toes if it had adjustable suspension and cruise control. Honda has definitely submitted the Africa Twin as the “premium” bike In this segment. If the Transalp had more adjustability and creature comforts it’d be too close to the Africa Twin and could make it irrelevant to consumers.

I use rever to plan my road-based trips, but I don't see the value in using my phone and destroying the camera as it vibrates on the bars. The limited number of routing points for the phone nav is also a major drawback. As a result, I much prefer my zumo xt for nav on the bike, especially with the weather radar overlay. The biggest problem I have with Rever is they give good info, but they don't let you add in your own. Why can't you let me just store a bunch of good roads and POIs in rever in a folder system that I construct, and ideally allow me to overlay that when building routes? I want to be able to include my favorite overlooks, restaraunts, trails, roads that Rever doesn't know are good, etc. And I don't want that info to necessarily be public, especially with the trail issues we have here in the northeast. Also, stop forcing me to date everything. Maybe it's winter and I'm just building routes for fun. I don't know when I'll ride a specific route, I just want to build it for fun and organize it as I see fit, instead of sorting useless info like date created or date ridden. I enjoy rever purely for the Butler maps features and for ease of use when planning on my computer. On my phone, I'll use Locus, which lacks the Butler aspect but allows me to turn on different folders of tracks and POIs. They could also do without the community aspect. I don't care at all about the competitions and such. Give me more planning functionality, more ability to hold information, and leave it at that.

Need to wind the Transalp higher in the RPMs to get to 90hp... I think its target demographic is spending most of their time on pavement (as most do anyways)

One reason to use a dedicated GPS...phone overheats if charging while running a GPS app, exposed to the sun in temps over 75f. Second reason is if you prefer your phone on your person at all times when in the middle of nowhere but still want visual GPS guidance (I almost never wantthe visual reference). Helmet speakers with GPS pausing my music is my preference. Second to that is...a turn list in my map pocket of the tankbag that I am going to make out regardless if it is a long day of riding.

If Garmin would get it's sh*t together, they could be doing some amazing things and selling some amazing GPS NAV devices. They're still using outdated apps, low quality devices and even the cables still connect via Micro USB ports! I mean FFS!!!!!!!!!!! That's what I get for $400?!?!?!?

The Cove 800 Super Adventure is 50 kg lighter than the Vstrom, how can a Chinese company make a similar bike so much lighter, it’s even 20kg lighter than a T7, it’s like Suzuki gave up.

Potentially a wasted two hours on a commercial for Rever, so I gave up on waiting for them to quiz their mate on the several known issues with the platform. If they did, which I doubt, then I missed out; my bad. My strategy for Android: create a route in, amongst others, Kurviger or Gaia; export as a .gpx file; open in Open Street Maps; simple and free. Note to self: if Ari Henning is not involved, avoid Revzilla.
