Johannes you are a (Scandinavian) legend! In 2023 I just couldn't make sense of buying a Garmin GPS for that money and being stuck in their eco system. The Carpe is awesome, but just too much money. I bought the Active 3 just like yours and am impressed by the built quality. Already loving it. Originally wanted to go for an active holder from RAM but after you explained the problems with the pogo pins, I opted for the Brodit with spring lock.

That's a great setup Johannes. Thanks for sharing it. I have been using a Lenovo M7 tablet running OsmAnd. Its a good size (7 inch) and cheap so that if it got damaged, it wouldn't worry me. The Samsung Active 3 looks like a great device but here in Australia its $600 AUD new and its a bigger 8 inch screen and quite heavy. The only comparable 7 inch tablet to the Active 3 that i can find is the Tripltek. Also great hardware but its $1,000+ AUD. You would think that with the popularity of drones that these tablets would come down in price.

I use a garmin Navigator 6 bike satnav which unlike tablets, is deigned to be fully waterproof and take shocks plus spare batteries are available from the factory for them if ever needed. Can't see myself using anything else. Used you can pick them up for under £300 and if you have a bmw you always have the option of the bmw cradle set up for charging and it additionally reads and displays all the bike's critical data like engine temperature, tyre pressures and just about everything you need to flick through bike dash screen menus for but all on one easy to read display. I'd be concerned about reliability with a tab but would also carry paper maps as a backup.

Other Android tablets to consider are: Oukitel RT3 Pros: Affordable, Android 12. Cons: Screen brightness is only 400 nits, no rear strap mount, 5150mAh battery. Hugerock T71 (or R71). Pros: Well made, 10000mAh battery, screen is 1000 nits brightness, tablet can be mounted via the included strap brackets. Cons: More expensive than the Oukitel RT3, screen is only 7 inches. If only the Hugerock offered a 8" model that's as cheap as the Oukitel, that would be good. I'm still undecided which one to get, but the brighter screen in daylight may be the way to go.

I am going to have to change my mindset significantly if I am to embrace screens as part of my ADV world. On the road I like audio cues for navigation but I doubt that’s ever going to work in the dirt!

Great video ... like you I am using a Tab Active 3. I am on 3rd mount system (tried Quadlock, RAM and now Gamber Johnson). I am really like the GJ mount as neat, lean profile and has security key lock. On a KTM790R I am running a Rade Garage screen and GPS mount bar. On the mount bar running a Rade Garage AMP pattern billet clamp which is connected to GJ mount via a home made ABS plastic plate (VESA pattern) to get the offset (correct centering & height) of the tablet. To fit neatly I am running the GJ mount upside down (with the blue slider bar / key lock on the lower left) - this allows the tablet to be in optimum location and still be able to unlock and clip it out of mount. Like you running Quadlock 90 degree USB waterproof connector cable - works great. Also have Carpe Iter adventure controller (the original version) for Bluebooth zoom, pan and operation of screen from handlebar. I need to upgrade my USB charge source to QC3.0 fast charger in a format that I can hide inside headlight assembly. If anybody is interested send me a note and I can send some pictures. Also run OsmAnd as main application (tailored for Offroad ADV), with Gaia and ExploreOz (Australian) for other references. This has been rock solid, water proof and easy to operate system - really happy ! www.gamberjohnson.com/products/samsung-galaxy-tab-active2active3-lite-cradle

Nice video! I have the same tablet on my bike for navigation. The only difference is that I ride a BMW K1600GTL and I'm not offroading (duh!). I was sick and tired of the Garmin, which is still a century backwards in that I can't upload a GPX through my phone or tablet to it, in fact forcing me to carry a laptop with me on holiday or pre-plan all the rides I want to do. Now I can use the tablet to do route planning, store the route on Google Drive or whatever and use it on the road. I made a mobile hotspot on my smartphone and use that internet connection. Works perfectly! The tip for that DM2 menu/dashboard app is cool, I'm going to try that out.

Great set up if you have the space to fit it. 👍👍👍 I just use a cheap Nokia phone on my handlebars with a quad lock, works fine for me, but I am old school and just use maps to tell me where I am not how to get there, but I like the adventure of not knowing and try to work it out as I go. The only time I like using maps is in cities where I have to find a certain place but after 30 plus years of riding without a GPS system and only the last few years using one, I find the GPS maps become a distraction, instead of looking at the road ahead I keep looking at the map on my phone. Back in the day it was look at a paper map and work out in your head how to get somewhere by using your memory and road signs. Is a GPS just another technology we don’t really need ? Is it just another product to make life easier and stop people from actually thinking ? People have traveled the world for Thousands of years, some without even a map, just an idea and discovered amazing places. The Vikings done a pretty good job and that was even without a compass. 👍👍👍👍👍

You’re critical to this and I like it, makes me reflect on my use of it. I’ve done both on my travels, with and without a digital map. I have to say for my use I think the pros outweighs the cons, especially when the pace increased and I used the tablet as a tool for knowing the next corners and turns. I definitely rode faster having this tool available vs. When I just read the trail. But, as a rider one has to be able to read the trail and the surface too, so I’m definitely going to practice both. In terms of relaxed, slow paced adventuring/exploring, I must say I like it for that application too. I can read the names of the towns I’m passing by and get a much better understanding of the geography. But is it a must? Absolutely not!

Nothing against your choice but the POGO pins on the Carpe Iter are not on the bottom; they are in the middle. Also, it has dual charging: besides the POGO, it has an M8 cable for redundancy. Another advantage is the ROM and firmware are made by Thork Racing, and it has a u-blox M8 (Carpe Iter Tab v4) or a u-blox M9 (Carpe Iter Tab V4b) which is a better "gps" chip (2Hz or 5Hz Updates) than what we find on normal tablets and phones, and users can even choose. And more. Not judging who doesn't want to spend so much money (I don't have it too) but its advantages to a normal tablet are considerably higher.

Are the screens less sensitive to water - like dedicated SatNavs are ?

If you place a sheet of plastic over the screen like a zip lock bag then the screen will likely be usable. At least it works on my Garmin. You may need to tape it tight to make the screen viewable.

DMD2 has a feature to lock the screen while moving, and you do most of the panning and zooming with the controller so I haven't had any issues with the display. This tablet is made for rugged outdoor use and handles rain pretty good.

Thanks Johannes, really great video! I did a similar setup on my BMW GS but I added also the controller for interacting with the map. How do you manage the tablet when your bike is parked in the box for long time? Are you shutting down manually or bring home for recharging? thanks

Hey Johannes, awesome video, and I think you have giving me great idea's for my android GPS set up. Like you I've looked at the Carpe-Iter units and when converting them to Australian Dollars, Wow, they are expensive. Like you, I'm sourcing a 2nd hand Samsung Active 3 or something equivalent. Can I ask, what are you using to mount your Brodit - Key Lock Non-Charging Holder (SKU 739003)? Are you using a RAM U bolt or something else, Can you please let me know how you are connecting your holder to your bar mount? How stable is it whilst riding, I'd imagine a little shakey on off-road surfaces? Great Video, well Done!

Brilliant! Is there a way to show the bikes info on the tablet such as fuel level, tachometer, gear, and odometer? I enjoy and appreciate your sharing your knowledge and experience. All the best
@JohannesDalenMC2 жыл бұрын
Thank you John! Yes there is, but one needs to connect a few different ‘readers’ to the bike. I don’t know all the details, but it’s the same as adding an OBD reader that get’s all the information from the ECU, and shows it in an app. The same way you can get the dashboard app that I showed in this video to show all the information.

Could you let me know where to find such waterproof USB cables? I would prefer the RAM mounting system, but I understand that that mount is not waterproof and those pins on the bottom of the mount do seem vulnerable to shortages when being oposed to plenty of water / long rain rides.. So I guess your system is superiour - I just can't fined such cables.

Hi Johannes, great video and my Tomtom550 will remain in the drawer as from now😅 Can the tablet charge on a regular 5v USB charger or should I, as you did connect it to 12v. And where precisely did you connect it to a life wire? Un saludo from Spain!

Greetings, I suspect it doesn't get as warm around your home as mine in central US. MyTab A8 is not ruggedized but I have it in a waterproof sleeve and it is held by a robust spring-loaded holder. Have you had any temperature issues with it sitting on the tank being subjected to ambient heat, sunlight, etc? My Zumo was designed to shrug off temp extremes, just curious, thanks! I was thinking possibly a perimeter sunlight deflector of some kind. My riding will be on-pavement long distances.

I have a Garmin Zumo XT and I'm sick an tired of this thing, especially when trying to follow presset tracks the garmin software is very buggy at this. I'm going to build your setup and found all your points quite logic (especially the charging solution) What Charger did you get, anything waterproof also? Any ideas/advise here! Thanks for the very nice video!!
