Watching so many of these guys drop their bikes early in the race it is easy to forget just how good we have it with modern sport bike technology, how heavy these bikes were and how slippery the tires were. It takes some courage to push those beasts around a race track. Thanks for posting this.

great vid, thanks.... bikes were still so ugly to ride back then in 1980 with all sorts of wallowing, head shakes, scraping, and weight problems... another few years and things really hotted up with new designs, much better handling, and far better engines with more power.... GPZ/VF-R/FZ-R/GSX-R era.... and now we have unbelievably good machines that handle well, go so hard, and very reliable... but can't use the power anymore with so much radar, point to point cams, and hwy patrol cars capable of 300+kph.... i feel fortunate to have ridden in the 80's when bikes were pretty good and capable of evading high speed pursuit. cops wouldn't even bother chasing the big bikes on the hwy.... biggest worry was passing a fuel stop coz those superbikes were thirsty too... i had a Kwaka Z750 Turbo with no oil timer so last thing you want is to blow a turbo by running out of fuel, but man it had some long legs and i'd travel 1000klms in a day easily. hwy cruise at 200+kph in comfort and great high speed handling too

This was really such a great class and era of racing. Anyone who owned these wonderful bikes could take pride in watching one like theirs racing in the stock production class. Many thanks for posting these videos.

Amazing old dinosaurs! 5 or 6 years later we able to ride much better bikes on the road. All through the 80s Japanese bike's were getting better by the year!

The winner a GSX1100 I reckon the best air cooled motor bike engine of all time. IMO

Still have mine. The early ones could twist the crankshaft during hard use like drag racing, I think when Suzuki bumped the displacement up to 1150 they started spot-welding the crank journals. But yes an extremely strong engine. Horsepower could be reliably tripled.

@@dazaspc Mine is actually a 1982, called GS1100EZ in the USA. It was a late 1982 bike, now that I think about it I recall someone saying they started welding them around the time mine was made. I put 85,000 miles on it but I have never had the lower end apart. Don't know if mine is welded or not.

@@Stacie45 Mine was an GSX1100 EFE 16" front wheel. That front wheel was only for the one year but it made the bike turn like it was physic, however it would shake its head at high speed occasionally. I fitted cams and a big bore kit to it after a while. It made good power but was a bit obnoxious on the road as it used to get hot.

Great Video, can't believe the amount of smoke coming out of Dave Hiscock's bike.

only puffing when hes off the throttle for a second..bad valve seals? constant smoke would be rings.

@@catzepplin The commentators mentioned before the start of the race during the warm-up lap that his motor had a stuffed ring or bore on one cylinder and that was causing smoking on overrun. Probably an oil ring initially as it was on overrun. I couldn't see much smoking under power. The team asked other teams if they had spare rings but nobody did. It seemed like the smoking progressed to another cylinder or other cylinders during the race but it didn't appear to effect the performance. Could have been running low on oil by the end.

It takes large marbles to race a inline 6 cylinder on skinny little slicks. Very large. 😊

only when you see these now classic bikes at meets do you appreciate how poor they are compared to todays bikes. makes you appreciate how brave these lads are/were to race them like they did. the CBX and 1300 Kawasaki racing? really? no braided brake hoses, sintered brake pads, sticky tyres, adjustable pro-active suspension back then, oh no, no such luxuries. just big balls and do what you can.
