Motorcycle tour of the Alps Part 1. Ferry, Vianden and the Vosges

Part 1 of our Alpine motorcycle camping adventure! We ride our bikes from Scotland to France stopping over in Luxembourg to visit Vianden before heading to the Vosges. I'm riding my Africa Twin, Chris is on his BMW R1200GSA, Yachtmaster is riding a new BMWR1250GS and Smillie is on his V Strom.

I know that feeling, the insecurity of leaving your comfort zone. Gets worse with age, and with health problems. Its like age related vertigo too, It’s all natural. But the bottom line is that you faced it and overcame it. 💪. Played that album Moon Safari to death back in the day, great to hear it again. Gonna dig it out for a listen after that 😃.

I always get a wee pang of nerves before a trip, I dunno if homesick was the best way to describe it. It's leaving the comfort zone of home behind I guess. It only lasts for about a day though.

Cracking video Mike. We did Vianden a few years ago and did the Vosges last year. Definitely back to the wee side roads of the French Alps next summer though...and Grom carnage the rest of the year. 😁👍🏻

Cool. I did France (Dijon Prenois) Lausanne, the Alps down through Italy, South of France back up through the Pyranness to Basque country in my £1250 Skoda Octavia mobile hotel... Now planning LEJOG on my Innova for next summer solstice 🛵

I'm hoping to go to Shetland for the Simmer Dim on the Monkey or Cub for the summer solstice. It must have been torture in the Alps in a car! Even the fast guys end up stuck in the traffic. I'll keep an eye out for you on the way up the road in the summer.

Dealing with your recovery, you mentioned feeling a bit weird pre-trip and on the boat. I recognise that, even trying to choose a route for a runout felt strange those first days out. What hit me over the summer (UK) was the heat, the minute it rose +25C I felt like a man with rubber legs, really out of sorts ... weird. Maybe it was an age thing. How did you manage with that European heatwave Mike?

We were there in September so it was after the mad heatwave. I'm glad to report I was pretty good!

Did you tell me you'd been to the alps on the C90? Is there a video?

Ha ha. No, we PLANNED taking the the C90s to the Alps, but during that planning we discovered if we had a headwind it would take about six months to get home. 😂😂

@@yodagoat Hmmmm - maybe I will have to give that a try so I will be one ahead of you !! Sadly my YB has been under the doctor for the past 5 months....just had a rebore but deciding what to do with it. Decided I couldn't waste whatever riding time I have left in life so bought a XSR125 - quite nippy!

The wee YB100 would be much quicker and more usable than a cub, that's for sure. I've got myself one of the new Monkey bikes so there may be scope for faster long distance trips on that.

@@yodagoat Trouble is the XSR and Monkey do not have the charecter of the the YB and C90 - have you seen Million Dollar Bogan's ride across the Australian Nullarbor on a monkey?

I have! An interesting ride for sure. I wouldn't agree the monkey has less character of the C90. Before I got mine I'd likely have agreed but now I've done 1800 miles on the monkey I think they're about even.
