Nice one Tim. The Voges is a fantastic destination. I stayed in Orbey with some mates a couple of years ago and did the Route de Ballon which is epic. I hope your Dad is OK. He'll be gutted he missed it. Not wanting to sound like an aging HIppy, but there is something quite soul cleansing about riding on your own.

Wishing your dad a speedy recovery. Quite looking forward to this video as I own an M1000R and I am planning a trip to the Alps in 2024. I am planning on using the Kriega us30 bag on the rear seat. Also the vibey bars can be mostly resolved by using Evotech bar ends which are heavier than stock.

Hope for a quick recovery for your da ..on an aside I can’t think of anything worse whilst riding a motorcycle than listening to music , sat nav or taking phone calls or txt messages ..defeats the escapism bubble for me ..yes I do use a sat nav that I can see everything I need , I don’t need it piped to my ears

You don't have to have the Nav talking to you in your ears! I have music/phone via my Cardo, but elect not to have the nav directions spoken to me (I just look at the screen). I only use music/pod casts on the motorways too, which I suspect is how Tim is using it also... Each to their own :)

Great trip. Hope everything's fine with your dad. Every trip has some bumps in the road, that's what makes it exciting, riding into the unknown. Funny that every single video of the m1000R states that it has a vibey handlebar/numbs your hands...how on earth has BMW not addressed this? It's not a work in progress...this is a very expensive bike. Kind regards

The bar vibes are genuinely baffling because you can't *not* notice them. It's not like vibes on a V-Twin where they're low frequency and part of the character of the bike. These genuinely feel as if electricity is pulsing through your hands. I'm a bit scared they'll be even worse on the M1000XR. Dad is fine thanks - he just needs some work on his nose to help his breathing at night

Hope your dad is fully recovered Tim! (I've always been quite wary of those Chunnel barriers... always thought I was being paranoid! Perhaps I had good reason... ;) ). Pizza Girafe is on my usual route into the Voges (I come down the main road from the north) and I have NEVER seen it open... :( (there have been a good few times we looked and failed to find food in that part of the area, and could have done with it being open (usually for lunch though, not dinner). Looking forward to the rest of the series, need something to distract from the shitty winter weather outside!! :( Top man! :)

Lots of places to eat in that area disappeared during COVID and sadly, never came back...! :( (I usually try and find a decent non-chain hotel to stay in that has a restaurant, for that reason/as a backup... ) (I found a fantastic one right in the middle of the Voges (but tucked away) this year! ;) :) :D )

We were on the hunt here (it was shut)... ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIWynIBmfcmjeMU ) and didn't find anything... luckily we know a few places in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines now, so that's where we aim for for lunch... (and ready and re-charged for the tramp over the Route Des Cretes... :D :D :D )

best thing on tv all Christmas 😀 I did a euro trip to the black forest the long way there on a street triple 675 in 2019 . it is do'able tho never do that again without cruise control so bought a super duke was a lot easier .

The m1000r is quite a low geared bike. The s1000r is actually geared better for longer trips with a longer 6th gear and longer final drive. I've actually just changed the gearing on my s1000r to be more like the m1000r to give it a bit more punch...

Sorry to see the painful start (for your dad) I've seen too many stories of those Sat Navs being a bit rubbish. Think I saw Simon Weir throw his in a rubbish bin. We're still using ancient but reliable Garmin 660s. A pal of mine, Noobiker rode this area. Watching his vids it rains continuously so I'm hoping you had better weather. I'm thinking I would still prefer to tour on my MT10 rather than the vibrating Bavarian rocket ship. I once made a mistake of putting my Peage ticket in my non waterproof pocket, then it rained, then I wished I could speak French at the pay barrier Looks the start of a good tour

I'm also still using my Zumo660 as I haven't had a good enough reason to "upgrade". I'm also often touring this area on my MT10 ;) :D (it doesn't rain there that much in the summer, I've been there more times than I can remember and never seen it rain (it must do, obvs, but I've never seen it))... I once made the mistake of putting my passport in what I thought was a waterproof pocket, and then rode through the mother of all day storms... :( I now keep all my paperwork in waterproof bags, inside waterproof (ish)luggage... ;)

@@mattmutane5502 Love my MT10. Will have had it 8 years in June. Toured a lot in Europe on it but got a bit of stick on my channel for putting our bikes in the back of my van (we only had 7 days holiday) to get the bikes to the Alps this summer

@@Banditmanuk I'd do that if I had a van, and the opportunity to use one for that purpose! (the Alps is a good 3 days ride to get to if you avoid motorways, which I do, because who wants to sit on the motorway all day on a bike.... ;) )). I've not been to the Alps for a while for that very reason, sadly (and the Semois, Luxembourg, the Eifel, the Voges and the Black Forrest are all nearly as good a much closer...so... :) ) From 2024, I'm going to try and get at least one 2-week bike trip done each summer form now on to try and help with that problem...

I like your style. I'm a Vosges fan boy although my ride is a bit longer to get there from St Malo as I live in Jersey (the only French port available usually although Cherbourg is sometimes an option). A good biker friend of mine lives near Colmar so I love a ride to see him and then venture off into the Black Forest and beyond. Apologies as I ride a 1250 GSA so no fuel range anxiety or numb bum 😉. Looking forwards to the next episodes as I succumbed to your marketing skills and subscribed......

Haha you don't need to apologise for riding a GSA! I'd have one if I could have more than one bike. What's the riding like in Jersey? Slow I imagine. That sounds nice a nice schlep across to the Black Forest though, at least you don't have to do Calais!

@@timrodierides I commute every day on my GSA although it is only 5 miles each way along the coast. You can get very dizzy riding around Jersey. We have a lot of bikers here as 1.5hrs on the ferry gets you to France and all of Europe awaits. Oh yeah and 40mph max but mostly 30, 20 and even 15mph in our green lanes. Im getting into my new E mountain bike. It makes more sense over here....

I have the Garmin XT, I was considering upgrading to the XT2 but I’ve heard lots of negativity about it, my XT has been ace travelling all round Europe with it, so I think I’ll stick with it

I'll be doing a full XT2 review in the new year. Garmin sent out a replacement and that's been fine - it's snappier than the XT and I like being able to beam routes to it from the Tread app on my phone. But I'm scared of its reliability now, and that's kinda vital for a sat-nav!

I HATE that smart notifications can’t be turned off on the Zumo XT2. The owners manual says you can, but it directs you to parts of the settings menu that don’t actually exist!

Tim, I think I’ve seen Kriega US20 as your tank bag on S1000R (or M1000R) I’m assuming you’ve used Kriega tank bag converter for attachment. Can you provide some feedback on ease of attaching it to the frame? Doesn’t US20 ‘flop’ at speed?? TIA. Rob

Good spot! It was a US20, and I was using the Kriega tank bag converter. From memory it just uses fabric loops around the headstock, then two velcro straps that you attach under the front of your seat. I used a roll of sticky-back velco from Robert Dyas to attach it under the seat. Then it's solid as a rock - you can unclip it for fuel stops and tighten it back up nice and easily. I did 165mph and it was solid as a rock! No flop if the US20 is reasonably full. And if the US20 is empty then you can just tighten the tankback converter up so it's taut... if that makes sense.

Interesting with mpg. If I sit at 60 with my tracer 900 on cruise I get 71mpg, it drops to about 55/60 going 70mph.
