After 45 years riding, I hand on heart say my classic 350 does it all, and in style. Cheap to run, easy to fix, built like a gun, goes anywhere any adventure bike can go, and it’s so much easier to handle.

Interesting discussion regarding touring bikes. I had a BMW 1250 RT followed by a 2020 Goldwing, on paper, they were everything I could have wanted/needed for touring. The reality is, they can be a handful and I never really enjoyed touring on them; they didn't even come close to matching the hype, a decent car might have been a better choice. When I got the Goldwing, my thought was, how the heck do you follow this, well, after 7000 touring miles on it, I sold it and bought the bike I should have had all along; an Enfield Interceptor 650, I would take it anywhere and have a permanant stupid grin on my face. You can tour on anything, but the best bike for touring is the one that makes you smile

About 10 years ago, I had a client in London, who unfortunately is no longer with us. He was an extremely senior civil servant in Whitehall in the 60s and 70s. When I told him I live in the Brecon Beacons, we talked about national parks. I remember him telling me that the REAL reason they were created was so that the government could, in years to come, make these areas out of bounds for the masses, and provide clear boundaries which they could then patrol and monitor. With the advent now of the worldwide C40 programme (15 minute cities to us) where we will be all coralled in ghettos and jabbed and fed like cattle, I've realised he was right. They want to end vehicle ownership and independent travel, and before the masses wake up to the scam it'll be too late. Going back to my old client, I now realise that he knew about the plan in full, and was a man of impeccable character, so wouldn't lie especially to a pleb like me so I wish I had investigated this more years ago. On another note, I recently bought a new Triumph Speedmaster. I paid my deposit and 6 weeks later the bike arrived at the dealers. I was in no rush so fine. However, I had ordered extras like dresser bars, mirrors and a pillion back rest and rack. I then waited another 7 weeks for them to come in from Triumph. The bike was stood in the showroom for 7 weeks being mauled by customers in the meantime. May I also say that it's my first Triumph and the dealership was diabolical. The buying experience was a shambles from start to finish, and having also visited 3 other dealerships on my travels I must say they're all the same. Having only had BMWs and Hondas before, this has been a culture shock for me, and whilst I love my bike, if it was stolen or written off, it's not a brand I'd go back to. My grandfather's brother was a key figure in the early days of Triumph, designing the Thunderbird and making the Bonnie a success, Edward Turner. Such a shame, and I hope that Triumph aren't going to make the same mistakes again.

Also Itchy Boots' largest engine capacity to date has been I think the 471cc twin in a Honda CB500x, which also travelled the least distance from Noraly's home country Netherlands since that season was only travelling around northern Europe. India to Netherlands on a Himalayan, Argentina to Peru on a Himalayan, Ecuador to Alaska on a Honda CRF300L Rally, all over southern Africa on I think a Honda CRF250L, and with all the camera gear / computer / drone she needs for her moto vlog on top of the maintenance and clothing and travel supplies.

Hi Freddie, i'm from the uk but live in the USA, i own a 1983 naked Goldwing 1100, there are so many Goldwing's out here especially as they were made in Ohio from 1980 to 2010 that supply outstrips demand so these 40+ year old classics can be bought dirt cheap, they must be the most affordable classics out in the USA.

To the fellow about riding a small bike on tour, it's a blast. I rode a Kymco Spade 150cc mini moto from Portland Oregon to Mountain Home Idaho and back, 1200ish miles, in 4 riding days (September 2021). I've also rode to San Diego and back on a FZ6 with my son on the back years ago. Both trips were excellent. The tour on the Spade was one of the most fun trips I've done. You do have to go into it with the understanding that you can't be in a rush and you will take in more of the sites. It also forces you to plan more scenic routes because riding on the interstate sucks. That's not all that great with a big bike anyways lol😅.

Hi Freddie, just touching on the bike insurance comments. I bought a 350 classic from royal Enfield and couldn't believe it when the insurance company gave me the quote. Fully comp insurance with just about every conceivable extra, life cover, helmet and leathers cover , legal cover, protected NCD cover to name a few. All for £150 in Manchester. Also talking about adventures on a smaller capacity bike, on the 350 classic every ride whether it be a trip to the pub going to work or a day out at the seaside they all fall into the adventure bracket on the 350 classic. Every time I go out on it and stop people love this little bike. People who aren't even into bikes say "I don't know much about bikes but that one looks special" . It's amazing with such a small price tag just how much attention it draws. What's your next adventure?

All interesting thoughts, thanks for sharing them with us. While I'm relatively new to "Motorcycle Touring," I have done a few trips to France. So far, I've found the "Smaller D routes" on a 660 cc ADV style motorcycle, a lot more interesting to ride as compared to droning along the motorways. The constant dodging cars and trucks has done nothing to elevate my experience while trying the have a holiday with my bike. I guess it is all very subjective. If you need to travel a very long distance in a short time, a big heavy motorcycle is most likely to be the best thing for the job. (Mind you, you probably could achieve the same result, travelling by train.) If you want an actual, "holiday" to make memories and have a low stress week away with your loved ones, or your mates, then a smaller machine and a more relaxed tour though the countryside will be your thing. From what I've seen first hand, with the speed limits everywhere being lowered through the villages and small towns etc, a 200 mph motorcycle is likely to lose it's purpose in the years to come, anyway. Keep the videos coming, they are a joy to watch.

Smaller bikes suit smaller lanes and are more likely to try some routes without tarmac. Yesterday myself and a friend rode an Enfield Himalayan and a Fantic 500 for 4 hours straight. We covered 120 miles in 4 hours. All tiny farm lanes, gravel roads and some off road. This is totally different to the riding I did on litre bikes which, though I’ve also done long days in the saddle, I kept away from muddy lanes.

Hi Freddie, a bit of a late message, just wanted to chip in about London and insurance. I used to live in London Zone 2 and my full comp quotes for my £5k Ducati Monster at the time were close to £3k per year. The third party fire and theft was around £500 a year, which is still a lot, but I wasn't ready to risk a theft as it happened to too many of my friends. I then moved 5 miles away from my old place, to Zone 3 in London with a garage and my fully comprehensive quotes were coming in at £5-600 a year, so I switched to fully comprehensive and never looked back. My premiums since then varied from £200 to £600 a year, which I'm happy to be paying, especially that my bikes got more expensive too. The biggest surprise for me though, was that when I bought a second bike and added it to my policy, it only cost me £28 a year more to have an additional £8k bike in my garage! Hope this is interesting enough for you

Yes touring on smaller bikes is different. Yes more fun if you keep of the motorways. A few years ago we had a trip round Europe planned but one friend had just sold his bike so could not go. Then I remembered he had a little 200 Honda exactly the same as the one I had in the shed. So I said let's take the 200s. He agreed and we had a whale of a time. Very little autobahn in Germany but the rest no problem. Done it a few times since and other friends have now bought Honda 200s. The smell of seven two strokes howling about is great fun.

As usual Freddie, a great podcast. Small bike touring. My first tour was on a SV650, one of the early ones. Went to the alps from the UK for a 10 day jaunt. Was great and hand no problems keeping up with friends on the 1000cc bikes. Moving forward, went on another euro tour on a bandit 1250. Great bike but the switchbacks in the alps had to be better planned on such a large bike so whilst enjoyable, a little more planning for the tight corners. I am on your side. CC is irrelevent. Just go and tour and you will have a great time. Keep up the good work.

The thing about touring on a smaller capacity machine ,is you tend to take things more chilled & see things you wouldn’t notice when riding a big touring bike down autobahns at 100 mph . Also the smaller bikes are more likely to get to places the larger bikes can’t. They are also more likely to be the same or similar to the type of bikes the locals ride . This makes it more likely to get parts or get some temporary bodge to get you to a big town dealer . You can also shove a small bike on a small boat & travel down mangroves & across rivers . I always buy Hondas or Suzukis ,never had one break down on me & always managed to get gaskets & any parts needed to service & overhaul them even ones 20 years old . You got more chance getting a part or gasket for an original Triumph from the 1960 ‘s ,than the ones they are flogging now . Every time I purchase any make other than the big four Japanese makes ,I have had issues & living nightmares . Final points I have always found I got more feeling of accomplishment ,getting places on the smaller machines . The best adventure bike is the bike you have serviced ,prepared & ready to go .👍

The bike is now in Normandy after being recovered back to a friends, I have arrived home (UK) to find a chain kit on my doorstep within 48 hours, 3rd party kit including the chain, front and rear sprockets. I may add at less than half price for the chain only in France. I am currently about to leave on my other bike with the chain onboard back to Normandy to effect a repair and then bring the bike back probably in September due to touring France for a couple of months on the Versys.

Hello Freddie, I´ve been to Scotland the last two weeks and was shocked when everyone told me that motorcycle theft is that high in all over UK and that I shouldn´t park outside Hotels or CCTV-equiped parking garages. I never locked my bike anywhere on my journeys cos if they want to steal my TEX they simply lift it (as you mentioned yourself). How about making a video specifically taking a closer look and investigate if the problem is that big, where and how worse it is in reality etc. Cos I hear from many motorcyclists from Europe that they avoid the beauties of Scotland / Ireland etc. cos they´re afraid that their bikes get stolen. Not only that they miss a lot when they can´t visit this beautiful nature and great tracks, but also harms UK´s tourism industry. In regards to prohibiting motorcycles from different areas has a lot to do what happens eg. overhere - some(!) "motorcyclists" come over to Austria and (as found by police) remove the DB-killer once they´re in Austria cos loud is fun(!?). They usally race to some mountain area, pay the toll for riding say a road to a pass but not to reach their desitination rather then to go up and down this exact same street several times a day, blasting thru small villages as loud as possible. In that regard I understand that the villagers living their are no longer willing to do talking, pay (via tax) for extra policing etc.. So they think it´s best to ban them once and for all to get rid of the issue. Stay safe Q

I believe it. Im in New Zealand, my daughter has a SuperSoco electric bike. We had a fault with the battery. It had to be sent to Australia for service, it took 10 weeks for parts to arrive from China, battery to be serviced and returned, and the NZ dealers did not have.a spare I could borrow. Un believable. As for touring, if I wanted to be comfortable, Id take a car. 8) Otherwise my 2007 Suzuki M50 is just fine.

Maybe there would be less people wanting to ban bikes if fewer bikers removing baffles, adding race exhausts, and revving the nuts out of bikes in towns and villages. I frequently go out to a small village in Essex, a popular biker haunt. 95% of bikers are respectful and quiet, then you get 5% of idiots, revving up, and doing wheelies as they leave. Nobody would like to live near that noise on a constant weekly basis. I rarely leave my bike out-of-sight, even more rarely do I take it into town, but I always use 2 heavy duty disk locks. I'm planning on getting one of the new Litelok x3 moto D locks, which are supposedly very resistant to angle grinders, although they're a very price £250.

I don't understand why anyone would buy a tracker as an anti-theft gizmo for their bike. Who is going to retrieve the bike? Do the people in the call centre put on Batman suits, or do they just inform the police (who will do nothing)? The clearest way to understand the effectiveness of these devices is to do an insurance quote with, and without, a tracker. The last time I tried, there was no difference. This means, they are NOT considered to be in any way effective, otherwise the premium would be lower.

Freddie buy a Thunderbox healtech device. Acts like a switched live. Your Quadlock charger pushes into it but it only provides power once the bike is running. Them phone chargers connected directly to the battery will always draw some power giving you battery issues! The Thunderbox is £65, connects to the battery and only works once it detects an increase in voltage from a bike that is started. Once you turn the bike off it detects a drop in voltage and cuts off supply to any devices connected to it! Cannot recommended it enough!

Interesting! 1. Do mountain bikes have engines? Why are they banned due to noise polluion? 2. I had a Honda 125 2021 model, the fault was a engine warning light that kept coming on, the cause could not be understood so Honda agreed to a Warranty Claim to replace the top half of the engine. £1K worth of parts (not including labour). The claim was raised in September of last year and the final part that was required to do the work arrived in Feb 2023. 5 Months back order on parts for a bike not two years old!

*I'm saying this so that Freddie doesn't get into trouble with his mechanic:* the mechanic could've found that part himself and just charge Freddie 70 pounds for it... because that's what mechanics do. I don't have enough fingers and toes to count the number of mechanics who have a shop full of vehicles "waiting for parts" because they just don't want to take -20 minutes. Anyways, these are my words, please Mr. Mechanic, don't take this out on the '010 Bonnie. (Everything I just said is true and you can watch the movie Doc Hollywood as proof.)

I watched this in the middle if a 3 day tour on my Royal Enfield 350 Classic, which I tool at th3 last minute in preference to my Tiger. I set the satnav to avoid highways and I’m having a great time. Having said that, if I were going to be on the road for a couple of weeks and do 1,000s of miles, I would prefer my old Harley Road King. They are very different bikes, so if you have a small bike, you just need to plan your tour to suit the bike 😀😀

It's really easy to make gaskets. You can buy sheets and cut to suit. See Allen Millyard's channel. He makes his own. I was taught years ago to make them from cereal packets. Worked well.

i have the pragmasis, a good one is their noose chains, means you can get a smaller chain that still has great reach, also their customer service is excellent! i bought a chain that was too long but sending it back for a replacement was so easy and the customer service response was so quick! Kovix alarm disc lock is a good too and one of the loudest at 120db, kovix also do a bar mount to keep the lock on the bars when not in use so handy for bikes with not a lot of storage

Hi Freddie, last year I went to the Triumph experience centre in Hinkley, and I was told then that the waiting list for new bikes was 5 months . And on the distribution side of the business all the warehousing racks were nearly empty. Triumph acknowledged there are serious problems with ordering spare parts.

we live 3 miles from Hinckley and visit quite often for coffee . Triumph Birmingham East main dealer is approximately 10 miles on the old A5 at Wilnecote Tamworth . they have the complete range there new and used .also its a Honda dealership also . i have bought many bikes from them and they are 1st class to deal with in my opinion. they are SUTTON MOTORCYCLES .

i've been looking at trackers and one thing i will say is the monimoto only has one way to give it location and tests showed it was useless if your bike was put into a van or underground parking. Biketrack is expensive but has more than 1 form of tracking so for me, biketrack is well worth it if you can afford it and monimoto is defo better than no tracking if on a budget

I'll go for minimal liability when I move back to England from PortugaL. I'll be insuring a Can-Am Spyder F3-S and a Buell XB12X Ulysses, hopefully on the same policy. For the last 11 years that's all I've had down here, like everyone; ditto the last three years in Thailand. I have the heaviest Almax chain. I'll lock them together in my garage. Disc locks when I'm out and about. In Thailand where I'll still be for most of the year, I just park my bikes on the drive. In town, I leave them anywhere, helmet on the mirror. 1990 [Nick J]

Hi Freddie, I don't understand these costs. I run 2 bikes vfr800 and the Cbf1000 I've held a license since 1979 and returned back to biking 10 years ago cost fully comp and European roadside 290£. Some conditions as off street when at home and locked. I'm hoping for 260n£ this year. Maybe having a long licence and no accidents as well as getting old er helps. Ade

Hi Freddie, KTM 890R brand new, exactly the same problem with getting parts from a main dealer. Seems to be a worldwide problem with companies who deal specifically with China for the production of parts and accessories. I still have a part on order for this bike and I no longer have the bike, months of waiting…though I’m now back at Triumph! 🤷🏻‍♂️

Take care where you secure your bike. The heavy chain might take 5 minutes with an angle grinder to defeat, but the light railing it's attached to might need 30 seconds, and then someone wheels off the bike onto a van.

This is a case of a few idiots ruining it for everyone. It is easier to ban all motorcycles rather than to try to equip the rangers with the test equipment and then train them to use the equipment. Don't blame the Parks, blame the noisy quads, noisy side by sides, and idiots with loud exhausts on their motorcycles.
