Trading in a bike (a depreciating asset) you've had less than a year from new is a really, really poor financial decision. Not sure what they were expecting.

I will be honest here and admit I have done the very same thing. Never again. I now buy 'almost new'. Not only is someone else taking the initial hit they've generally replaced the exhaust, added a nice seat/screen/heated grips. The savings can be immense.

Interesting topics of debate 👍🏼 As an ex UK police officer, I can confirm that speed and speeding is absolutely a targeted thing (in some areas and circumstances).. and in many cases, it’s hard not to argue that it’s not a way to generate revenue… The proliferation of cameras in the UK now is extraordinary.. Fixed speed cameras, average speed cameras, mobile van speed cameras, mobile hand held speed cameras, also, congestion zone cameras, ULEZ cameras, and even sound cameras.. And if that lot doesn’t get you, you’re always being watched by CCTV cameras! As for bike prices and classic bikes.. there has definitely been a slow down on classic bike sales and 2nd hand bike sales. You see the same bike listings week in, week out - not selling. I have a collection of 7 1990’s/early 00’s Sportbikes.. & their values have moved a little as other bikes are not selling. Things never stay the same though, markets increase, markets fall.. If you don’t have finance or put your entire life savings into a bike(s), don’t panic.. Just monitor the sales market. I am happy with my choice of bikes so I’m not desperate to sell (other then my Fireblade) Just my 2p worth 😄👍🏼

Sort of on topic. On the subject of market place being overpriced with chancers. I buy vintage camera lenses from a local cash converters for a fraction of the price on FB. Example my latest £10 buy from a shop will cost £40-£50+ on FB.

I have one of the smaller Asguard sheds for about 10 years. I have moved house at least 3 times, for a couple of years it sat in a field in a disassembled state. Now it is back in full time use. Still in great condition. For insurance purposes it has always seems to be as good as a brick built garage. You can shoe horn in two full size bikes if one goes in forward and one rearwards, so long as we are not talking two GS size bikes. Condensation has never been an issue, there are enough vents. The only issue is it does get very hot in summer so extra insulation is a good idea to keep the temperature down although it hs never caused me any issues with my motorcycle. Regarding Suzuki extended warranty, it is the gold standard in manufacturers warranties, for this alone they deserve to sell more bikes than they do. Actually their reputation for creating reliable bikes is so good, its probably a rare thing to need it. For piece of mind, it is pricelesss and it actually costs the owner nothing, just the cost of an annual or sheduled service at dealer prices. I'll take that. By the way they do the same with their cars. You don't even need a full dealer service history. A dealer service gets you 12 months warranty full stop!. Which brings me to KTM. They also offer a similar extended warranty, but only in the EU and it would seem only if you have a full dealer service history. Why won't they offer it in the UK and other teritories?. It would solve any nervousness people have buying their bikes, it would preserve the used values and be a very quick way to lift the very low reputation the brand have at the moment. Of course it might cost them a small fortune at the moment, but that would incentivise them to design in reliability like the big four Japanese companies have done for decades. By the way, 1090s & 1190 KTMs didn't seem to have anything like the issues the more recent 790, 890, 1290s have had. How did they manage to drop the ball so specacularily. By the way, CMC motorcycles will do a life time warranty on most nearly new motorcycles. Now that is THE gold standard in motorcycle warranties.

No idea where Clive got the idea that you can sell your bike privately on MCN, when you browse their website it's obvious they only do trade sells, pretty much what's already on Autotrader. How fair dealer prices are I don't know, I'd love to pay less as the next rider, at the end of the day it's a business it is supposed to make money. There is little to no appeal to buy private, 1 you can't buy on finance, unless it's a loan, 2 you have no warranty what so ever, 3 god only knows what lemon you are getting and what has the bike being through. Plus there are so many things to check, if you don't do your due diligence proverly you might drop a back of cash and have the bike reposed by a finance company.

I've used Autotrader for years, both as a buyer and seller and never had the slightest problem. Never used MCN anyway. Their for-sale website has always been poorly run and the MCN editorial staff are living in the dark ages, promoting or reviewing ridiculously over-powered bikes and having an emphasis on power/track rather than practicality. MCN is no longer relevant and you can tell by their occasional YT videos that their staff are frankly not very bright, and way behind French, Spanish and Portuguese review sites which are more intelligently presented, more comprehensive and better produced.

I do sympathise Ian, I also own a RE 350 Meteor which is now £1000 less than I paid in 2022. I didn't trade it in because I'd rather keep it than sell at the current low second hand price. Sometimes you win but more often than not you loose

Just bought bsa gold star for £4300, new unregistered. A massive £2200 discount from original release price. Like most I did consider the triumph 400's but don't think they are suitable for any real touring due to vibs. I guess I owe thanks to Soltire Motorcycles Edinburgh, BSA and of course Triumph for creating such a massively competitive market. Just hope all manufacturers survive it. Trev

Freddie I wonder if there is simply a fundamental problem of over supply of bikes for the size of market of riders. We are seeing a lot of absolutely mint bikes that are 20 years old mostly because manufacturing and materials technologies in the last 20-30 years has meant many bikes that are kept even moderately well are just lasting seemingly indefinitely. Manufacturers old and new, are still producing many many many machines, and people are still buying new at cheap finance rates. It's a glut; A flood; a Feast; Chow down and pass the sauce.

MCN the most respected motorcycle publication? Only in its own imagination. I've been reading it for almost 50-years. It's just about OK, no more than that. I suspect its ban on private sales is down to dealers not wanting (lower) private prices making their stock look expensive. All markets rise & fall, a bike is now mainly a discretionary purchase and due to the impact of the cost-of-living crisis people don't want to spend so much - or anything at all. That's life.

Even camp sights going off track tried to rip folk off with high prices now every one goes abroad or do B.B. or cottages sorry to go off line but it all adds up and now the biking market is going to dip because all these items are a luxury and fall under the same illusion !!

if you buy through a wheels group dealership, like I did for my Kawasaki Z650RS if they service it they give you a lifetime warranty, allegedly the same as the manufacturer - they also do Honda and MV Agusta - more food for thought - servicing seams reasonable too

Screw MCN then, sell it on eBay, gumtree, Facebook, etc. Plenty of outlets. I guess MCN get paid by the traders who don’t want to be undercut by private sellers. Same as Rightmove, when I wanted to sell my house I couldn’t advertise through them, unlike Rightmove in Europe.

Sellers are also to blame for selling issues, when I was recently looking I watched a local bike being re-advertised weekly so it did nto say for sale for 13 weeks etc etc , prcie went up and up throught he summer. I messaged and asked if the seller was open to offers and got a very short no. So I bought from a decent seller and had a great deal, that is a deal both parties are happy with. The bike I did message is still for sale ! as are a few of the others I was watching! Sellers are often being unrealistic as tp the real value of their bikes!
