A quick description of traction control for motorcycles and what it does. Demonstrated on a Triumph tiger 800 in Baglodore India by me (Bret Tkacs). Adventure bikes are unique and understanding them is important.

Thanks Bret. I found your channel yesterday and I'm in the process of binging from the start with the Vstrom in the snow.

TC is great if you're on your first dualsport and getting a feel for how far you can lean on pavement, wet cement, and dirt. It helps build confidence in your skills and your machine when you FEEL the slip, but then stabilize. Awesome video, man

Nah you just got to grip it and rip it. If you’re a real badass the bike will be too scared to crash in fear of disappointing you and so you won’t. It’s how MotoGP works.

RIDER ASSIST is great for KEEPING inexperienced riders inexperienced the fewer rider assists on the bike that faster a new rider can become a GREAT rider and yes there are riders that have ridden for years that are STILL just new riders

Did you mean to say 'Bangalore'? instead of 'Baglodore'

Hey Bret, I’ve seen you on a V-Strom before so I’m wondering...I have a 2018 V Strom 1000 with traction control, would you ride off-road with traction control set to “1” or off? Everyone talks about how you need to always turn it off as soon as you leave the pavement but I’d like to hear your answer as an expert! Thanks Bret!

It boils down to how you define offroad. The main reason I bought the KTM was due to it being the only TC I found effective offroad. If your idea of offroad is gravel or dirt roads you may be fine. If you want to get into slick conditions, loose hills et. It's likely you will need to turn it off. My Vstrom predates traction control so I don't know how refined your system is. In short... It depends I ride the KTM anywhere between 6-0 offroad (road setting is 9)

Would there be any other examples than getting out of an extremely low-traction pickle where TC0 would be best? I was once stuck in deep mud with 80:20 (road) tires, and any level of TC literally had my bike stall out... 0 TC got me out though (with a ton of persistence and clutch lovemaking).

In extremely technical situations TC just isn't up to the job

It's an easy choice for me. There are no TCS on my T7😂

Ah yeah, traction control. Artificial skills for those who lack actual skills. For as much as for the ridiculous bikes are selling now (as much as a car) I rather not have it. That is why I love my Tenere 700. No traction control or much electronic BS. Here is the kicker, the bast majority of expensive bikes with all the electronic BS can hardly keep up with it. With many saying riders that the only bike that can beat it or at least match it is the KTM 890 Adventure. Plus, when that junk brakes down you better have some deep pockets. And if you are in a third world country, good luck finding someone in the middle of no where who has the skills and equipment to work on it and fix it. Yup, keep your fancy bikes, I’ll keep my T7 and with the money I’ve saved, I have nicely accessorized it and taken a few nice trips on it. Oh and of course, all that along with the reliability of a Japanese bike.
