Midlife Motorcycle Diaries

Күн бұрын

This first episode sees us leave our overnight stop near Stonehenge and head for the. Plymouth Ferry port. Attempting to escape the grey, gloomy English weather and spend a few days making our way across Spain and eventually making it to Barcelona to visit my Son and his family. Initially, this first stage takes us as far as Logrono in the heart of Rioja country. Thankfully the weather does eventually brighten up and we ride some beautiful sweeping roads and enjoy some great tapas. We finally figure out a strategy to deal with the Spanish tradition of eating late! We go out early for a light bite and beer to keep us going before venturing out much later than we normally would - staves off the"hangry" feeling!
We hope you enjoy this first episode - please give us a thumbs up, comment and share if you do!
Accommodation: The Holiday Inn, Stonehenge £119 (Booking.com), Gran Hotel Balneario, Puente Viesgo £103.52 (booking.com), Sercotel Portales, Logrono £95.60 (Booking.com)

You've got to love the "Universal knife & fork signs" Alot more pleasant than a toilet sign but usually the same result 😅. If you're back in the general area again look into taking a divert to Narbonne on the French border. The Les Grands Buffets is the finest buffet I've ever been too and relatively easy to get a booking ahead of time, one not to be missed. 😊

First time visiting MMC Diaries. Could not agree more with the viewer comments above. Big fan of your detailed maps, plus a good look at the ferry, hotel and food & drink stops. Convenient gas stations work for the bike but planning a proper en route meal is essential for me. Cheers from Alabama

We did a similar journey back in May to visit family in Reus. We took the Bilbao ferry from Portsmouth and rode through part of the Pyrenees staying in Broto. Some beautiful scenery and roads. Then down towards Reus via Lleida. I do find the late eating culture annoying. But the majority of Spanish, including my in-laws, eat their main meal lunchtime. Like you, we found a way round...we stopped at Burger King in Lleida (not ideal but we were hungry!) and also on the way back found a really good service station offering some nice food. Quite a few bars offer tapas for free with a drink, which I love! Looking forward to your next instalment. 😊

You’re right, most Spanish people ear their main meal at lunchtime and after a siesta they come out much later - doesn’t work for us 😬 but love the idea of free tapas with a drink - I had the same experience when I was riding through Mexico - couldn’t believe it! 😀😂

Another gem from MMD. You two have exactly the right attitude when it comes to touring (for me, that is) being the big six-0 and diabetic the schedule you guys set is ideal, I can't do or neither wish to the 10/12 hour stints in the saddle that others see as vital (wrong). Content like this keeps us going and longing for warmer, dryer days ahead. Looking forward to this.

This time of year is good for me here, as I get to wear my full leather suit (Had it from my MT-10 days... and love wearing it as feel so much safer!) - Having been through a life threatening accident in my youth on my Honda MTX 250... I went on the Pont Aven with my bike, unfortunately it was also roasting hot and the bow doors failed. It took 3 hours to fix and everyone was soaking with sweat by disembarkation time. That was 2 years ago so I would hope repairs have been made since. Talking to other bikers this was not an uncommon occurrence.

Nice video, as always good to watch and really informative. Just wondering...speed - you seem to have a very relaxed riding style, and I was wondering if that's deliberate, eg you set a max speed of, say 100km/h while riding off the motorway, or is that a speed that simply feels comfortable?

Thank you Phil - we don’t consciously decide a particular speed but we just make sure we aren’t rushing around! The whole point of touring for us is enjoying the environment we’re riding through, we’ve never been interested in speed for its own sake! 😀👍

In Europe, even at 4 or 5 star hotels Beds are super small comparison to the Beds here in the US. Service being 1 or 2 stars is the new normal since Covid. Americans invading Europe during summer months in the last few years made the service even worse.

Thanks very much, we’re glad you enjoyed them! The maps of the proposed routes were obviously Google maps and the maps showing the topography, speed, etc after our arrival is from an app called Relive - it’s brilliant and you can get it on the App Store! 😀👍

Made a similar trip by car a few years ago. The kids were obsessed with spotting those hilltop bulls through Basque Country. Made for a happy trip all round!
