The 2021 G310GS has a slipper clutch and electronic throttle that make it essentially stall proof. BMW also swapped to all LED lighting, and the solid state headlight allowed them to eliminate the rubber shock mounting that caused the annoying headlight vibration flicker at high RPMs. I looked at the 390 ADV but it was too orange. 😀 I bought a new old stock G310GS yesterday. BMW had a US$1000 dealer incentive and the dealer came down another $370. I bought the Baby GS as a 60th birthday present to myself for errands around town, fun Saturday rides in the country, and the occasional overnight camping trip. I'd like to take off for a week or two, but probably never will. I'll still probably pick up some Rally Raid upgrades, although for me, they're mostly aspirational.

So, using the Aussie saying: "at the end of the day", if you spend about $4k (US), in aftermarket parts, the little GS is a good 50/50 motorcycle. It gives us, the more dirt focused adventure riders, more reason to wait until KTM releases the 390 Adventure. Hopefully, the R version, assuming there is one, will have spoke wheels. Thank you for an honest review on the little GS.

When I stopped in at RR to see Jon and Liz to replace parts I smashed in Morocco a few weeks earlier, Jon showed me his 310 prototype that I thought would be a good fit for my wife to replace her F650GS. I think she’s coming around to the idea, but she likes her bike! As you know I switched to a 500exc from my 690RR that I rode in Africa, Europe, the UK and North America. I watched your videos along with others in preparation for that ride and carried all of those extra parts that you and others had fail on you. Luckily I didn’t need any of them! My problem with the 690 was it was too heavy and bulky when laden! I just could not enjoy riding it. Going into Africa from Spain, I dumped nearly everything but my tank bag, back pack and a tail bag. To this day, that’s all I ride with now. I’m nearly 60 and like to spend most of my time off road and the 690 just was too much. I don’t want to depend on help picking up my bike! After switching to the 500exc, it fits me and my riding perfectly! It took weeks to get comfortable with the 690, but it was immediate with the 500! I’ve made numerous 2000 mile rides with it now and it’s fun! Off roading is a pleasure! I’m at one with it! Fuelled and geared up, it’s 150lbs lighter than the 690! I’ll be bringing it to Australia next year for my 6 week trip! Hope to see you!

It is great to see this comparison. Nowadays people think they "need" big and expansive bikes for adventure ridings, but that is definitely not true. And thanks for mention, what the average speed is, when you are traveling in those countries. I travelled with 17 Horespowers from India to Europe and it was totally fine. Now i am travelling with a Kawaski KLE 500. Was in Kyrgystan, Tajikistan and Albania with it and often far away from the main roads. And it worked very well. I really hope there will be a lot of variety of bikes in that smaller and cheaper class in the future. And i really hope that that people will realize that there is not always a need for those big bikes, and that you can realize your dreams of riding also on smaller bikes and smaller budget. Spend more money in travelling than in bikes ;)

Nice comparison. Totally agree with you re power of the BMW. Enough for Asia etc but underpowered for long distances on the roads of Europe and America. Still can't understand why no manufacturer is making a more "adventure", "rtw" biased 400/500cc bike that does have enough power and comfort to sit at 110km for longer periods. I know it's been said before but come on Honda, do a mini Africa Twin with the CB500. Yes I could buy a CB500X and fully Rally Raid upgrade it. But how much would that be? Must be talking near to £10,000? I know Honda could do it for less than that!

The 690/701 are no doubt great bikes but once you add the bigger tanks and so forth sadly the cost is just a bit much. If you have the money it is not such a big issue but I am guessing with the Rally Raid kit it would be around 25k Australian and in my book a luxury that is way out of my budget. At the end of the day it is about the travel, spend more on the travel than on the bike, no good having a great bike if you can not take it anywhere because you have no money left over. Great interesting vid, food for thought never goes amiss.

From the rally raid uk web site this kit looks to be around $4500 - $5000 aud (not sure about shipping cost though) for fnt and rear tanks, fairing, bash plate with storage tank and soft luggage racks. Have you ever considered a DR650 for an around the world adventure bike? its roughly around the same weight as the 690, spend a little money on the suspension , do the muffler, airbox and jet kit, get a big tank, add a screen, and its a pretty sorted bike, handles well, very reliable, no fuel pump, no injectors, old school technology, can still cruise at 130kmh-140kmh, plenty of aftermarket parts, and its much cheaper than a 690.

The dr650 is an excellent affordable round the worlder. But it doesn't go, nor handle like a 690. It's just a matter of preference.

@@MotorcycleAdventureDirtbikeTV I agree the DR doesn't have the power of the 690 and never will, so if someone want's the extra power then go with the 690, however in my opinion for adventure riding you don't really need 70+ hp, as far as handling goes, I've never ridden a 690 off road (I've ridden a 701 on road) but I've owned and ridden a husky TE630 off road and in my experience a DR with sorted suspension handles just as well, but as you said, each to their own.

Unfortunately the cost of the rally raid conversion on top of a new BMW310 out weighs it's value for money, when you can get a WR 250 R with a Safari tank for $9100, that has better suspension & wheels out of the box, add a seat concepts low seat, bash plate and a screen, change the gearing to 14/48 and you have a better bike as a package. Which can hold it's own against the bigger bikes in the dirt and will do 100 kmph easily on the highway.

Keeping in mind a full RR package is running over $3k on the 310, which is fair for good kit, but. Actually the KTM 690 was designed and built prior to the Husky TE630 - built in 2011-12 now the SWM RS 650 or Superdual, were the KTM was built in 2009 ( and hasn’t changed that much ) the new Husky/SWM has a new fuel injection system and basically have fixed a few known issues that the TE had. The 690 in stock form needs loads of coin to bring it up to an Adventure Bike ,( not to mention the common issues the 690 has that they have never fixed - there are a lot ! “ the were the Superdual is already to go for a fraction of the price. And the 310 is built in India & on top of that you need to spend another 3000 or so for the upgrades. And it’s only a 310cc bike.

Not the most honest review of the KTM. I had the 690. Problem with the 690 is the fuel pump and you have to take oil with you. On long journeys it drinks that motorex oil. I did 1000 Kms from Scotland. Going up the beaches and KTM had to deliver oil. Also don't take it near the salt as the salt will eat the magnesium side plates.

Simon, before you challenge my integrity maybe you'd better watch the whole effing video you sanctimonious git. And all big big bore bikes at speed drink some oil but it sounds like yours had a problem. If I keep speed around 100 ks it barely eats any. In the last two thousand ks it hasn't needed any. All bikes used in salty environments will corrode. WTF? Is your name a pseudonym? Coz Low says it all.

I strongly agree. But I'd also ride it through Asia and North India.
