You are correct, the WR250X was soooo much fun to ride. I've owned an X and R of the Wr250 and they are both incredible but the supermoto is the funnest bike I've ridden on the street, hands down.

Hi Andrew, I'm new to your channel and new to dual sport. My other bike is a big one that satisfies many of the itches but I remember the fun of off-road, scrambling tracks, and out in the boonies riding I did as a kid on whatever I happened to be riding at the time. I picked up a one-owner 2016 WR250R, 6000 miles, set up as a SuMo, and came with all the original equipment, wheels, tires, floor jack, etc. on Tuesday. I'm in transit back to Colorado and will be dropping it off at the shop for a thorough going-through, fluid change, and whatever needs to be done. I live about 6 miles outside the entrance to the Front Range mountains, reservoirs, canyons, and lakes. I'm eager to get this little machine out there to rediscover what you guys are living. I appreciate your content and will be tuning in regularly.

For the price difference, get full YSS suspension with adjustable fork cartridges and the CRF is a better bike. More torque, efficiency, larger aftermarket with cheaper parts and over all better value. This is coming from a die hard WRR fan that clocked 24k miles on my 2012 and have owned 5 Yamahas.

Loving my 300L. Have a new front sprocket and front spring but have yet to install. Still having a blast and taking it places most guys are shocked to see it there. I've started to upload some raw footage. I don't have the gift of the gab like you do! And I swear a lot!!

Great review. Searched high and low for the 300L Rally and couldn’t find one. Found a great deal on a top of the line WR250R and I couldn’t be happier. Looking forward to a newer version of the WR or Rally. Until then, this WR 250 is so much fun to ride! Thanks Andrew

I’ve owned 2 WR 250R’s. I feeling low end torque problem is solved with going down front sprocket quick and easy. Also the suspension is wayyyyy better. Front forks are a true cartridge fork with compression and rebound dampening adjustments. Adding the aftermarket suspension to the 300 L only stiffens the springs. Honda made the forks look like a true cartridge fork but they are not. I work at a powerhouse Honda dealer so needless to say I parked my WR in back lol 😂 Nice video

Probably put that 🐕 🦴 suspension piece on the rear suspension 🤷🏻 doesn't seem like it would drop it 2" tho. I would like to lower my bike so it's more convenient but leaving it up higher stock makes it so it's easier to be seen by other cars. I just learned to like what I have may not be the best 🏍️💨 but I enjoy the shit out of it, it's cheap to operate, register, insurance & ⛽💰... BTW thanks 4 recommending the 550 performance ECU tune that really helped out! I'm hella happy. All I know is if you don't get the tune you should leave your exhaust stock I think that was the best performance but when you do the exhaust just a slip on you need to have a tune because my bike felt like it had a small flat spot around 5K RPM after the 550 performance tune that shit was gone! Bike ran great! (BETTER than stock) I have the skid plate & crash bars combo, Delkovic exhaust, 550 tune, kenda 70/30street tires, real hand guards & 🧲 drain 🔩 with 10w30 full synthetic 🛢️ 🏍️💨 flawless!

I have just come across this channel and I have never ridden a motorcycle in my life. I'm comparing and contrasting some different dual sports on the lower end in price and displacement. So far, out of all the research I have done, Yamaha's and Honda's are really where it's at in my opinion. Some day, very soon, I hope to buy one or the other.

I had an 08 WR for 8 years. Did all the mods and it was a great bike... probably one of the most fun bikes ever. I just snagged a 2K mile 2020, so here we go again. I was temped by the CRF and KLX because the price was decent but they are both more like beginners bikes and not sure I'd be happy with either. Out of those two, I think the Honda would be my choice almost on looks alone. Torque output is another big plus for the Honda. Good video! I enjoyed your take on it.

@MotorcyclesOffroad yes, I've ridden Durty Dabbers twice, Durty Santa once and had a two year membership to FRO. Unfortunately I never really got my use out of my membership due to neverending medical issues (cancer). 😕 It's had a major impact on my offroad riding opportunities being in treatment so much or all the pain. I'm up in Hunterdon County but make the 90 minute drive down south to hit the sandy trails in the Pine Barrens as often as I can. I have a couple of plated Honda CRF450X's. A SuperMoto and a Dual-Sport bike. If you're ever up for having an old guy tag along (I'm 56), give me a shout. I'm sure we'd have a good ride. 👍

I bought a 2020 wr250r last may 2021 bran new over the Honda 300l for to reasons..1 Honda 300l has welded sub frame and built in Thailand 2 I prefer yamaha over Honda...I do not regret paying a little more. All youu have to do is change the wr250r gearing to 14/49 and it's a whole different animal..and I've had mine up to 95mph with the gear cahnge

Great honest review. I’m bias I have a 300. I know the Yamaha and the Honda are both good in their respective ways. With all the mods available you can turn either of these bikes in the direction you want. We have to remember they are built to be a Jack of all trades. They will never excel in one specific category. I almost made this mistake with suspension. Almost went overboard with a shock that was much more than the bike could ever handle. The Honda needs a suspension fix for sure. And I’m slowly finding out that a fork fix like Race Tech or equivalent fixes the front end. But for the rear shock all you need is YSS or K -Tech ,and a few other 5-600 dollar range shocks. And this bike will work awesome. Anything more is a waste. It’s a duel purpose bike. Don’t ask for to much. But the latest bikes that are out there are pretty damn good

I’m lucky enough to to have several dirt bikes KTM EXC/ Honda CRF450X etc I’ve just bought a CRF300L mainly for its low maintenance intervals which allows me travel almost anywhere both road & trails without any concerns currently I’m upgrading the 300L & most importantly the suspension I’ve just ordered a complete front and rear Ohlins suspension kit other planned upgrades will include fueling/ECU upgrade so that sound should make me a fabulous little duel sport machine for those days I want to hit dirt I’ve always got my enduro machines however recently they’ve been left in the corner of the workshop think I’ve realized riding slowly & taking in the beautiful nature of South East Asia (Laos) is far more rewarding…!!! I’ll definitely have the new version of WR if it’s ever released…!!! Great Video & relevant comparisons…!!!

The crf300l is the perfect bike for me, just what I was searching for🤩 It's reliable,you don't have to spend a lot of money for maintenance and that's 80% of reasons why I want it I'm pretty sure if you get a good exhaust, a better air filter,bigger air intake, better ECU and fuel injector remapped you're gonna get this bike close to 35hp You can also make it lighter, around 10kg lighter would be perfect (it's pretty simple) Looks like the best supermoto build bike

I’ve been looking at the Honda Rally 300. Grew up riding dirt bikes, first one was a Yamaha 60 mini enduro, 2nd was a Yamaha 100 enduro, and 3rd was a 74 Honda Elsinore 125, my favorite. Honda’s first 2 stroke. That bike was fast and a blast to ride. Also bought an RM 125 and thought that was a great bike, but only road it a couple of times and sold it. Took a break for 33 years and started with Honda NC 700X DCT. Didn’t like it much, and went a bought my first sport touring Yamaha FJR 1300 AE, no clutch lever and was a hell of a bike. Have also had 2016 Africa Twin CRF 1000 DCT, didn’t like it much and traded it in for 2017 VFR 1200F DCT, great all a rounder. Currently ride a 2018 Goldwing DCT, non tour, and 2010 VFR 1200 F DCT, 170bhp, and a guided missile. Now thinking of getting a dual sport again like the Honda Rally 300. One caveat to all this, if you're in the minority of dualsport riders who want to do technical single track riding / Hard Enduro (and for some reason want to do it on a japanese dualsport), the WR is the frontrunner. Especially if you drop to 13/50+ gearing, non dot gummies and tubliss. I've ridden all three on technical singletrack and the WR felt the best suspension and handling wise, the KLX300 had the best power and the CRF was a fat cruise ship. Wouldn't recommend any of them for this purpose, but if for someone reason you want to do it, that's my experience.

I owned a WR250R with a pipe and tune. For an offroad dualsport it was quite capable. And it was surprisingly smooth on the road. In comparison to the two stroke KTM's I've owned over the years the WR was a heavy pig with an engine that you had to rev the crap out of. I know, not a fair comparison, but it sounds like you have experienced both and know what I mean. I have been thinking of getting back into the lightweight offroad capable dualsport world and it sounds like the CRF300 would fit my desires better than the WR. I would prefer a torquier, lower revving engine and ride at a less aggressive pace than I used to with my WR. I will probably be disappointed with CRF suspension, but I'm sure a respring would be enough to get me by. Thanks for the in-depth comparison.

Great video. My first ride with others on my crf300 was with a guy who just got his wr back from having a bunch of motor work done. I felt like I could hang with him (to an extent, he had a ton more talent and experience than I do) but it was clear the suspension was my weakness.

Yes I can see that, and to be honest it doesnt take much money to have a CRF set up for performance. As I onlined in the video a full suspension can be upgraded for 700. Then ECU, exhaust, and intake at that point you have a really solid bike for cheaper then the MSRP of the wr250 stock.

Both are great bikes. I grew up & learned riding dirt bikes. I loved my little Honda XL80 when I was a kid. Naturally when I was turned 18, I transitioned to sport bikes. I actually had bikes that lasted me years. I had a Yamaha FZR600 & then a Honda CBR600RR. As I got older I mellowed out & sold my RR & bought an R3. Loved that little bike but missed the power. I did so many upgrades on it I probably should’ve gotten a P-Twin 500 or 600. I no longer want a bike with an austere riding position. The new Honda CBR650R is more comfortable than its RR brother & has been one of the bikes that has some allure for me. However, over the past several years there’s been an explosion of models in the adventure & dual-sport segment. There are so many models out there now that blur the lines between bike types & it’s a great time to be a rider & buyer. While a lot of the adventure bikes are compelling recently I’ve been leaning toward dual-sports & the Kawasaki KLX300 & Honda CRF300L. I don’t want to spend $10-$12K on an adventure bike but want something that is obviously fun to ride, reliable, & a great value. Many new riders forget that it’s not just the sticker price of a bike but the total cost of ownership you have to consider. In today’s inflation riddled world everything is more expensive sadly. I mean how many times have you see first time new motorcycle buyers freak out at all the fees & the final price before they walk out of the dealership with the actual bike.😆 Anyway, given Kawasaki’s & Honda’s success with their 300 dual-sports I wonder if/when Yamaha & Suzuki are going to up their game & join the party? Historically I’ve basically had Honda’s & Yamaha’s but did have a Kawasaki KX125 & Suzuki DR100 for a time when I was a teenager. I’m leaning on getting the KLX 300 but am wondering about 2 things. I already mentioned the first about Yamaha & Suzuki joining the fray. I also wonder Kawasaki will do what they did in their 300 sport bike lineup & amp up their game by making a 400 or 450 model? While I prefer Honda & Yamaha, I definitely comparison shop & try to go with the “best” bike in terms of features, performance, reliability, & what’s best for me. Knowing my luck, I’ll buy a bike only for a new model to het released.😆 It’s a great time to be a rider & this bike segment has exploded & been a smashing success. Since I do a mix of commuting & rising for fun, it’ll be amazing to have a dual-sport again where I can do some off-road riding again & some bike camping adventures - can’t wait!

I haven't been on a motorcycle in 14 years and I'm 6'10" 260lbs so trying to find the right bike for me is difficult. I don't want the big 500s because my skill level isn't there and I don't want to spend 10k on a bike. All I'm wanting to do is ride back roads and trails. To me the KLX 300 camo is the best looking bike and it has adjustable suspension. KLX300 just needs a better display with gear indicator and fuel gage. The CRF 300L needs to come stock with a lot better suspension that's adjustable and it needs different color options preferably camo. Plus I have family that owns a Honda and Kawasaki dealership.

I had two WR250Rs and miss them a lot. Started looking for a new bike on Thursday, and to my dismay found out the WRR was discontinued. Ended up buying a Honda CRF300L Rally and am really glad it did. The seat heights are comparable with the right springs or suspension, and it looks far more modern than the WRR. The extra power at lower RPM is nice too.

Good review! I picked up my CRF300L a couple weeks ago and so far I think it’s pretty good but a little anemic. I was always a Yamaha fanboy and when and if they ever come out with a 300 to 400 cc duel sport to compete with the Honda I would jump on it in a second. I really have my doubts Yamaha will do it though with the way the economy’s of the world is now.

Sold my drz, bought my WRR. I really dont think the DRZ needs a 6th gear. It had enough Grunt , you can play with the gearing and really achieve close to what you want without a 6th gear. I agree the WRR makes its power up in the rpm. I've found dropping the gearing really low makes it alot more pleasurable to ride! Makes the 6th gear somewhat usable also. Have not had the chance to ride the 300l yet, but a buddy of mine bought one recently, says he loves it so I'll have to take his for a ride. Thanks for the review!!

For some reason, probably my riding style I really like low end torque. I loved my Dr350s. I think the WR would gear supermoto. I wish there was more of the "X" models around.

@Motorcycles Offroad my other buddy had a WR-X but it was stolen. I've yet to ride a supermoto but would really like to sometime. I'll agree, even with the gearing change it's still not the same as having a bike with grunt. I do miss my drz for that, but after this review I may start looking alot more at the 300l as the next bike I try.

Well done review. New to dirt; bought a nearly-new XT250 on which I got a good deal. I was searching for CRFs at the same time and just couldn't find any available. I'm happy with my little mule for now. My buddy is a WR owner (he has the extra Super Moto rims and swaps back and forth fairly often), and he is a HUGE fan of that bike. WR prices are dropping this summer. I know I tried to sell mine. A similarly built CRF 300 will be $2000 more than a wr250r. I.E. $7000 vs. 5000. So WRs are going to become a super deal. I ended up deciding to keep mine.

Changing the gearing on the WR makes a huge difference. Throwing a megabomb header and FMF pipe and it has plenty of grunt download compared to stock and much closer. Also low-mileage wr's can still be had for about $5,000 in good condition and low miles

I agree but I also feel its a double edged sword. I feel adding gearing can also shorten the gears a lot and bring on a lot more shifting as well.

Sixth gear is so tall tat it actually makes 6th more useful everywhere unlike a DRZ for example. I was going 70 -75 for 30 minutes on the interstate with no issues yesterday. Did 200 miles on dirt roads, single track, secondary rds and interstate. I'm on my 4th WR and have put over 45,000 on these bikes. I also have a Tenere and a YZ250X. The WR is so versatile and I can rip on moderate singletrack with it. I did have the rear shock done by GoRace. Bike works so good!!

Was debating getting a clean low mileage WR or a 300L. Ended up sort of taking your advice, and getting a cheaper WR250. It's a 2008 with 13k miles, paid 2400$ and it came with an IMS tank, skidplate, hanguards, pivot-pegz, case protectors, etc

The dual sports that never get mentioned are the KTM 250EXC and the Husqvarna FE250. Unfortunately they are no longer in production in favor of the 350's. My favorite dual sport was the Husqvarna FE250 and I should never have sold it. It was about 250lbs and had all the power you would ever need in a dual sport and with Michelin AC10 tires and a seat concepts seat it was pretty comfortable on the street. If you ever get your hands on one of these two bikes I would love to watch your review. I also really hope Yamaha does come out with a new 300 dual sport.

I have never tried one, maybe I will keep an eye out. The worst that could happen is I review it and sell it or it could be a bike I fall in love with. Thanks for the recommendation, I basically love all dual sports tho haha I haven't found many that didn't put a smile on my face when riding.

I got bit by the horsepower bug and sold it to get a Beta 390. Big mistake, the Beta was heavy and did not have as much power as I was expecting for a 390 engine and it was very awkward handling off road. Maybe because it was tall and felt like it carried the weight up high similar to the Yamaha WR. Sorry to ramble, I enjoy your channel and look forward to what comes next.

Great timing on this video. I am debating getting rid of my 450exc for a crf300 and was wondering how it holds up against the WR250. The CRF is a serious step backwards from the exc in the weight and power world but a step forwards in the reliability world so I am pretty torn. I have been checking out your videos though and it looks like a great little unit.

Thanks for this comparison. But you forgot one thing. That is the quality of the components. The wr has much better quality products on it. I don't know where you found all your data, but the crf300 weights 140 km and the wr250 130 kg. I think 10 kg is a difference.

It depends on you really. What kind of riding do you want to do? How tall are you? what is your experience level?

We have a place in Michigan UP where there are lots of "back roads" with 55-65 mph speed limit. Wouldn't probably do any aggressive trails. I started out on dirt bikes then rode sportbikes for 10 years so I'm not a completely new rider, probably just a little dusty on the dirt.

Good debate I have 3 motorcycles . The smallest being a DRZSM with 50/50 TKC70 rocks. But I have had a WR250 it was ok, But looking for a small cc dirt bike again the 300L is looking good. I believe my other bikes are a bit heavy for exploring areas I have never been IE: backroads trails. I have the AT T7 and the DRZ . So the 300L might be the the broom in the closet. Around Bend Oregon out on 2 wheels

My modded wr rips on single track tight climbs and ruts. I struggle a bit with loose rocky steps because of the lack of low end, but I Believe the wr needs a more skilled rider to be enjoyed fully.

the honda is just so much more advanced just by the transmission itself, it's smoother at the same given rpm as the klx300. more power and more low end torque than the klx. suspension is upgraded down the road anyway might as well trash on it in the first few years. swap out some cbr cams and stage 1 now you're flying. the rest is whatever you end up learning or dont learn

I’m now just starting to look for a crf300l I’m coming off of a gen 1 sv650s and wanting to look for more for off-road. I owned yz125 and a kx 250 before getting the sv. Now I’m just waiting on getting approved for the crf from the dealership since I have 0 credit atm🥴🥴 but I now have to look into getting a credit card here soon so I can pick one up after building some credit

Thanks for the video very good. My 300L is finally in the shop, just waiting for the changes I want, going with Dunlop D 606 rear, Pirelli M 16 front, bash plate, better handle bars and hand guards.45 tooth rear sprocket ( witch they are having trouble getting ) rad guard, double take mirrors and rear rack, also going with LED lights and heated grips. Hope it will not be to much longer, before I am out on the trails with it. Could use some info on where to get a 45 tooth sprocket for it.

Thanks for being a great resource with valuable information. I bought my 300 L about 1 month ago, and have had so much fun with it being my first bike. I have been mountain biking for 16 years, and wanted something that keeps me on 2 wheels after a morning mtb ride. In the month I've had it, I feel like it's great cross training as the 300 L is creating some strengths that mtbing alone wasn't doing, and vice versa. Just got back from Fruita, CO, and it was awesome to explore the desert in a different way!

That is an awesome story! I 100% agree mountain biking translates into dualsporting well. I used to mountain bike a ton some years bake. I had a black/white Kona Firemountain, loved that bike but I look now and the price I paid for that bike doesnt even get me into entry level good bikes now lol.

All the top athletes in both disciplines use the other as complimentary training or just time out from their regular discipline. I went from racing enduros for 10 years to racing mtbs for the same before injuries from both caught up with me, now I’m 57 and suffering from stiff arthritic joints but have just secured an as new WR250R (funny enough they don’t hold their price as much in NZ) for commuting and adventure riding with a novice friend, I can’t wait! Thanks for the great video.

Thanks for your content. After 30 years I've been reconsidering the nostalgia of Yamaha (other than YZ) for the practicality and cost to value of the Honda in this case. I'm also a shorter 5'5" rider and would use this commuting 15 minutes to work more than on the trails due to recreation vs daily work life balance. What are your thought's a year later? I'm looking to pick up a dual sport (non-adventure) used, and wondering what your suggestion is versus straight retail purchase w/this newer tech. Even KTM in the last year or two has changed compared to history of 300 bikes etc.

My family owns a dealership and we sell both. Ya can’t beat a Honda. But I can ride any bike I want and when it comes to this dual sport class the wr250r is just hands down a better bike. Of course that’s personal preference because my dad will tell you the Hondas are better. The Hondas do look better. So I break it down like this. If you want 50/50 street and trial I’d choose the Honda. But if you want slightly more trail than street I prefer the Yamaha. So basically I’d rather ride the Honda getting to the trail and the Yamaha when I get there lol Did you pull the trigger yet?

I have a WR (duh - check my username) and love it, but I ride these days almost exclusively on-road. For riding around my small town, it's fantastic. Very agile, quick enough, and so much fun to ride. I changed the horrible stock seat out for a Seat Concepts seat and that made a world of difference. I've never ridden a 4-stroke that almost seems like a 2-stroke like the WR does. It loves to rev high and has nice power on the top-end - especially for a 250. One thing I've noticed is that the WR is almost always compared to bikes of larger (in some cases much larger) displacement. That alone should tell you something about how good the WR is. I love it, including its looks - and I'm not selling it. UNLESS, maybe - Yamaha comes out with a WR350 with 40-45hp, still relatively lightweight, with long service intervals. Then I'll have to see... Nice review!

Hey MotorcyclesOffroad I know this is a bit off topic on this video but since we both ride in NJ I was curious. Has anyone from Law Enforcement given you issues with your aftermarket exhaust? I’m thinking of getting a Yoshi or FMF for my CRF450RL. Just was curious since I heard in NJ the cops will ticket you for it. Thank you.
