First hand experience : Got a new 2015sm road it hard every time I got on it. Burnt many sets of tires off and few sets of break pads, I Jumped it , Dumped it dropped it and knocked it over. Road it on the highway at 80 mph for hours . Took it off road where a SM shouldn't go, learned to drift it in a circle on grass then pavement . Learned how to go through the gears ridding a wheelie. Been over the handle bars bringing the back wheel up to high at the stop light. I put 44,000 miles on that bike in five years. I had one hell of a fun time every single mile. The ONLY thing ever done to maintain the bike besides tires and break pads was just oil change . The valves were never even adjusted. It run strong the day I sold it. (I almost cried) . Sold it for 4k got it new for 7,200.00 .... So I paid 3,200.00 for 5 years of riding that bike That means 640$ a year or just 53 dollars a month. To ride that bike. That's a pretty good deal in my book.

I have friends with DRZ400SM's. Once I got to ride them around for a day I was hooked! I ended up trading my MT-07 for the SM life. Something about a Thumper just made me excited. I've owned many Carbureted vehicles and have grown to really enjoy them and honestly enjoy how minimalist the DRZ is. It's extremely enjoyable and at the same time relaxing to ride quickly becoming my favorite motorcycle. It is heavy compared to other dual sports but if you're coming from heavier sport bikes it feels like a bicycle!

That's what puts me off many modern bikes... The weight. When manufacturers start paying attention to that they will make more 'hitters', bikes that sell off the shelf a and leave a lasting impression. Better acceleration, braking, Handling... Low weight helps in many areas favoured by the user.

If it aint broke, don't fix it. Now I wouldn't complain if Suzuki upgraded this thing, but I have a 2016 model that is all tricked out. Spent about $2500 in upgrades, and it's arguably the most fun bike I have. It's not the fastest, but you can really ring it's neck and not be going insane illegal speeds, which I like. Very fun even at lower speeds. And it handles great with a sticky set of tires. If you can get one of these used for $3-4K, and then put another grand or two in mods, you'll have one of the more fun bikes out there.

Just got a 2022. Ive had many other bikes. My last two were GSXR600 and a GSXR1000. I had a ton of fun on the sport bikes, but have to say that the DRZ is the most fun I’ve had out of the 5 bikes I’ve owned in my life time. I love the torquey engine, and it’s just a blast to ride on twisty back roads. Wish I had explored the super moto world a long time ago. I find myself trying to stay out of trouble from the desire to avoid traffic by hoping curbs, burning across a field and back out onto the road in the suburbs. This bike brings out inner kid. I don’t have any issues with it not being fuel injected or having a 6th gear. Ride it as it was intended to be ridden and you can have more fun than you can imagine. It’s a great bike!

I believe that the way the emission regulations work is that existing designs were somewhat grandfathered in. That is, they are only held to the emission requirements that were in place at the time the bike was introduced. The flipside of these regulations is that any upgrades will negate the grandfather status. Hence, this bike still has only 5 speeds and a carburetor.

Let me get this straight, the tires are smooth on the inside because Suzuki uses non tubeless wheels.The mirrors are adjustable, just like every other adjustable mirror. Yikes! I like Adam's reviews but sometimes he over complicates things..

Thanks for the review. That's some crazy street laws where you are from. Just making your own lane, I could see people getting upset with that. I couldn't do that even if it was legal hear cause of common courtesy. I guess I'm never in a rush, and can wait my turn. Thanks for letting us know about the DRZ.

I bought a 2006 brand new for $5500 out the door. Was a great bike. Put 26K miles on it. Spent way too much time and money beefing up the motor, and then dealing with the fallout from that (blown headgaskets). Ended up going out and buying a KTM 690. A way better bike in every way. Now I spend my time riding bikes, instead of working on them!

Chuck a pair of Continental Attack SM evo's on it. Stick with the OEM sizes, and pressures. Takes the heaviness out of the steering and transforms the bike into a scalpel in the twisties

@@machupikachu1085 setting for you means new springs and revalving. drz suspension sucks its to soft
@machupikachu10852 жыл бұрын
@@tougeattack123 actually, no it does not mean that at all. It means adjusting the fully adjustable suspension. There are literally hundreds of different combinations in stock form to suit your riding style and weight. You are referring to having a custom overhaul to your suspension because you think it's too soft. My buddy has jumped his stock SM consistently over 20+ feet while not bottoming out. How much more firm do you need? Are you using yours for X-Games?

Not much has changed for the old DRZ400 (SM). Question: with all the new, carbureted, & updated designs, why is the DRZ400 still sold? Interesting.
@machupikachu10852 жыл бұрын
Literally zero competition is why. Kawi and Honda just updated their anemic 250's to 300's but are still almost the same weight as the Dr.Z, with 50% less horsepower and worse suspension. On the other side, Honda's 450, and the KTM, Husky and similar entries will be maintenance queens, and cost you almost twice as much in some cases.
@sweetcostarica2 жыл бұрын
@@machupikachu1085 *_Zero competition?_* You do know that there are many, many more Honda CRF 250/300s *_sold_* than Suzuki DRZ 400s for their tons of other benefits. And again, The new-ish Honda 450 and the KTM are expensive & are high maintenance but they are much more popular & desirable. *_Zero competition??_* Maybe, maybe not. But I can predict that even the few people that live in Arizona, Nevada, Australia, the tropics, i.e. places where the DRZ400's carburetor does not "act up" and the old, very old design doesn't disappoint... They will not have a DRZ400 to buy soon (discontinued) or have a brand new modern 2024 or 2025 DRZ400FF. F = for fuel injection & the other F = new frame. Just my opinion.
@machupikachu10852 жыл бұрын
@@sweetcostarica yeah, pretty much zero competition. KLX300 - roughly 300 lbs,$5500, Dr.Z - roughly 300 lbs $7500, 50% more horsepower and torque. Honda 450 - less weight, more power, more maintenance, $10 000. KTM - best performance, $12k + So yeah, between 5 k and 10 k, there is no competition. You want an under powered bike? buy the KLX. Wanna spend over ten thousand dollars on a dirt bike? Plenty of options. Want a bike that you can convert from sumo to full dirt that can do highway, huge jumps, and canyon carve with bullet proof reliability and a cartoonishly huge accessories aftermarket for a reasonable price? Yup, me too.
