Motorizing a leather patcher - V-Belt Pulley Fabrication

I picked up a cheap chinese leather patcher -- a Singer 29k clone -- for some leather work because my little entry-level sewing machine is not sufficient for leather. DIY is an illness, so I decided to add a motor to the hand crank. :)
I fabricate a v-wheel pulley on the mill (I really need a lathe!), which will be driven by a modified "hoverboard" hub motor.
Apologies for the audio levels, was having some microphone difficulties :(

Obviously, this video is both FOR entertainment purposes, and also depicts a project performed for entertainment. I enjoyed it. However, as a pure value proposition: monitor commercial equipment auctions and ebay for the many-times per year, guaranteed, clockwork bankruptcy of a medium sized leather shoe or garment or leather furniture manufacturer. Cylinder arm 1 and 2 needle machines tend to sell for lower costs because they are not as intertchangeable. If you are lucky, you might walk away with a Durkopp Adler or Juki cylinder arm for $1,000 all in (freight and fees included).

Always measure once, cut twice, still too short. I am always disheartened when not parallel, crooked or out of round or extreme lateral runout. If the horizontal mill is level to the floor and the table is locked in at “0”, then a short spirit level would tell you a lot before cutting. But we all learn from our mistakes, getting distracted when the wife is yelling about the trash goes out the same night for 23 years, my butt itches, neighbor has not return my level or my 16 year old daughter has a new “Goth” boy friend. I blame the equipment, especially when the tool cuts the power cord. At least that’s what my coworkers did. Have fun and let it go👍 ASE Master Auto Tech since 1978 / Retired

Thanks for showing warts and all. You know I make mistakes LOL. The mill was happy as a clam. Music was again very nice. Loved the milling cutter reversal to do the groove. Looked like a pro. Ha! The amazing walking parallell and the chicks did scars. You had to see mine lift as I was tapping - a lesser tap would have broken right off. _Dan_

you know you can buy aluminum evaporating cooler v-belt pulleys in just about any diameter you want for around $20 or less and all you'd have to do to make it work is find a piece of metal tubing or pipe wit the appropriate wall thickness to use a center shim, should take all of 15 minutes.......

Yep, I believe I mentioned mounting a stock pulley somewhere in the beginning, I have several of those pulleys laying around. Decided to make my own because A) the spoke pattern on those pulleys didn't quite match where I wanted bolts (and are quite thin), and B) where's the fun in that? :P If I wanted a quick job I wouldn't be messing around with this patcher to begin with, just buy a decent leather sewing machine and be done :) Sometimes the fun is in the process, not the end result :)

You can buy a motorised flywheel on eBay for these for around $120- , this includes a new extended axle to attach the flywheel while retaining the hand crank , why would you waste your time doing all this ….
