Listening to your radio repairs brings back a strong sense of nostalgia. It was 1979 or 80 and I was about 12 living in Navy housing in Pearl City Hawaii. I got my first battery transistor radio from my dad off the Navy ship he was on. I remember being hunkered down in our quarters during a particularly bad storm with all the power out. I sat in my room and listened to that radio. I distinctly remember listening to "Rock With You" by Michael Jackson, "My Sharona" (The Knack), "When Your In Love With A Beautiful Woman" (Dr. Hook) and "Sailing" by Christopher Cross that night. I still have a picture of the dial in my mind. I was hunched under my blanket and I thought I was king. I know, I know....no one cares. Irrespective of that, this content really kicks nostalgia in the backside. FWIW, I was using the grey/brown monaural hard plastic ear phone that came with the radio.

Hi Shango, I have a one owner Ranger 700, my Father's. And yes, it is a DX beast. The selectivity is top drawer too. I remember listening to the AM band at night in the early 60s, the stations would just roll in. I run mine on 10 9 volt batteries and 6 AA cells. They give me about 8 hours of run time on the filament battery. Only mod was to install a 1N4007 and a 150 ohm resistor to sub for the tired selenium. I've never touched the alignment, still hot as a firecracker. Really enjoy your videos.

I worked for Motorola back in 1978 at their Business Band FM radio plant. I know some of the higher power radios went out of the factory emitting loads of spurs across the spectrum when transmitting. Happens when you overdrive a cheaply made class C RF power amp.

I have an Emerson 569, same face as the 558 but with provisions for AC power with an external rectifier can that plugs into the wall. These things are dogs to work on, I lucked out with mine and was able to get it working on both power sources. Tiny battery compartment- used 12V garage door opener batteries for the B+. For the size it’s a decent performer. Better than most coat pocket ‘40s sets. Not a whole lot of volume on the weak stations, but it holds its own.

For the battery eliminator not a lot of power is required for the B+. An audio amplifier producing a sine wave connected to a step up transformer would not produce a lot of interference from harmonics. Something like a LM380 or maybe something stronger would be good. The filament could use a linear regulator. The way to prevent interference is to use sine wave power.

one way of getting 'noise' free 90v ish would be to use a capacitor multiplier string, a 'cockroft walton' multiplier, you'd need a x10 setup, will take about 20 small electrolytics and similar number or diodes! only problem is it'd only be suitable if the 90v and 9v or whatever LT is, has common negative, you wouldnt be able to isolate them and use it on a set with a bias resistor in series with HT negative

Wish there were more on the Emerson. They just built a brand new campus outside of St. Louis. The company is located here, but the products are built in China. From their corporate page, they don't really market consumer electronics like they use to. They did have a cool looking clock radio on the page which had a phone charger on top, so you could wirelessly charge your phone up by laying the phone on the radio while you sleep. I might look for one of those tube radios. A vote for the pod creature is a vote for Obama 3.0. We now have an authoritarian monarchy in this country. Sad and scary...
