Great restoration. I restored the only Predicta known in country - I live in EU, close to Austria :) Friend wanted it, shipped it from states in 3 boxes. His was tabletop model with power transformer. Anyways, I did a full restore, replaced all paper caps, and some resistors. Electrolytics were all 100% good. Sadly the CRT was also weak (the image would even go negative if cranked up too much). That was a problem since I didn't have a tester to test the weird 2.3V CRT, as they were not used in Europe. I did find out that if I cranked up the brightness up to 3V, it produced a really good picture. Later I managed to find a Heathkit tester that actually supported that voltage. With my friend permission, I rejuvenated the CRT with that tester and it came to 100% emission. He probably ran up about 200-250 hours over the few years on that TV with no difference in brightness.

Shango, I'm one of the few younger guys who likes working on these older sets. I have a Philco Predicta mine is the table top style. Mine belonged to my late great grandmother I restored it to working order back in 2006. It's still going strong. It lives on my dresser in my bedroom and i use it as my bedroom tv. I have a Roku Hooked up to mine via a HDMI to Composite Video converter which plugs into a VCR which outputs RF into the Philco. I also have a DTV converter box hooked up so i can get over the air TV via my outdoor antenna. Heck as i write this i'm watching College Football on my Philco using my DTV converter box and my outdoor antenna. Do i ever plan on getting rid of my Philco Predicta Heck NO! It's been through a move from Michigan to Florida. Blizzards when i lived in Michigan, Severe weather when i lived in Michigan and now Florida it's been through a few hurricanes and been knocked onto whole house generator power. I can relate to what you went through in the video trying to get your Barber Pole Model working again. Mine was a similar mess like yours.

Those 21 inch sets were known for short CRT life. The 6.3v CRT replacements are far superior, but finding the short neck wide deflection version is next to impossible. The longer neck ones will work, but require a spacer on the rear to put the cover back on. If not, the CRT neck just sorta hangs out. The 17 inch versions are a little more common and had a much longer life span. I do remember the last barber pole on this channel years ago. It also had spider webs.. lol. Its not a resurrection video without some dead arachnids! 😂

Model G-4654. The toughest thing about restoring one is trying to find a good CRT for it if it is bad! Poorly designed circuit board mounted on a metal chassis frame makes things difficult to replace. The longer it was in use the more it cooks the board's components. Shango persists and comes through once again. Picture although dim isn't too bad. Two thumbs up on your restoration efforts man.

When the control grid voltage is more negative with respect to the cathode, the cathode current decreases. So it's the same whether you get the grid more negative, or the cathode more positive - the image gets darker! That's what my grandpa's books said at least..

What would it take for a black and white NTSC-M tube set like this to work on a PAL BG system? I understand that for video adjusting the vertical size and hold for 625 lines would be enough but what about audio? How would you set the 4.5 MHz carrier to work on 5.5 MHz?
@shango06617 сағат бұрын
It will Work except for the channelization issues. You can feed the pal composite into an n.T.S c modulator and it will work
@davidbeard726213 сағат бұрын
PAL BG uses negative VSB modulation for the luminance; NTSC uses positive. This will require a signal inversion somewhere in the baseband video signal chain. In addition, the AGC may need modification. As a consequence of the negative modulation PAL receivers do not require a “black level” adjustment.

Sorry if this has been asked, but for people who just want the “look” of a set like this, is it feasible to make the entire “guts” out of reliable solid state components, and use those to drive the CRT/speaker/knobs? If mass-produced, I’d bet there would be a market for such “drop in” boards that could run various CRTs(?)
@erikj.206613 сағат бұрын
There was a company that made a modern replica of the Predicta. As far as I know, they’re out of business. The boards in these are not the problem. All discrete components, and serviceable. The CRT’s OTOH are the problem with these. Not very robust, and they were product specific. CRT’s really aren’t made anymore.

A good capacitor tester doesn't require high voltage to measure for leakage. It requires sensitivity under 1uF. 1uF over Requires different engineering for electrolytic caps. Your capacitor wizard is only good for electrolytic caps. over 1uF In circuit. it runs at 100 KHz and about 100 mV so no devices wake up. over 1 Uf You're checking for impedance. Not resistance with the lower value caps. Capacitor meters that check capacitors over 1 microfarad use. Impedance to measure a capacitor.
