@junechris4 жыл бұрын
It was also because in 1991-1992 Saturn 1.9L engines had a factory GM Exhaust header vs a more restricted exhaust manifold that they added later due to complaints about the noise. I have a 1995 Sl2 still and bought the stock header off of the 1991 Sl from a Saturn junkyard to add more power to mine. Of course I have more added parts to mine as well to quicken it up even more but.including bigger throttle body and ported, polished intake manifold, stiffer springs, polyurethane suspension, carbon fiber seibon hood, and cold air intake.. They were a good quality car. Mine is still outliving the other 2000 SC2 that my mother has, and my father's car which is a 2006 is already having transmission problems, so the old warrior satty is still holding up to this day!

No it is not. Saturn was part of GM but when they were formed they operated separately from GM. The S-Series cars were designed on their own and are not the same as a cavalier (like the Pontiac Sunfire). S-Series cars are some of the best cars and with a competent owner can last forever. Most of them are pushing 20 years old now and still going strong, they are still everywhere. While their "more reliable" Japanese counterparts are relegated to the scrap heap due to rust. Those plastic body panels were one of the smartest and most practical innovation for the longevity of a car in that time period. Now after 2002 when they discontinued the S series you are correct, they are just a GM in differrent clothes. But the Saturn that was reviewed in this video was unique to Saturn was not a rebranded Chevy.

Those gauges are what we get nowadays, but back then they were "scarce". In the 80s and 90s you got oil pressure, battery volt, etc. Now you just get warning lights.

Tossup between the Saturn and the Storm. I bought a new Storm for my over achieving & deserving son in 1991. It was a perfect car, dead reliable 38 mpg. 238K before we let it go, saw it running around for several years afterwards. The Saturn engine never dies, they can only be destroyed by a lack of maintenance. I've seen 390K on one, went to salvage only because the frame rotted out in our Northern winters. I owned a Tercel, which is the underpinnings of the Paseo, and it was cheap & problematic. The Civics suffered from early timing belt failures which ruins the interference engine, and broken torsion bars are also common. The Saturn would still win a long term test, I think, the Storm would take an easy 2nd. I've also seen stopping distances of 134 feet for it in other road tests.

Buy - Paseo: Gotta love Toyota reliability, looks, and performance! Joyride - Saturn: Most powerful with optional ABS and great handling makes for a fun drive! Crash - Storm/NX1600: Can't go wrong with airbags. Well, unless they're your mother in law and aunt lol!

I remember driving the Saturn when they first came out. I was really impressed!! Of course after a few years GM 🤬it up by making them re-badged other GM products that weren’t great at the time. If they left the company and engineers alone to improve on what they started Saturn might still be around today. I guess GM was in trouble and had to kill off a few divisions to keep its head above water. 🙄

It’s still incredible to me the mileage returned by mid-90s tech. This was long before hybrids became mainstream.
@rodmunch692 жыл бұрын
A 1989 Geo Metro with a manual would give you 59mpg. There's nothing tech about it, it's just an ultra lightweight car with no modern safety features. But as the government mandated more and more safety features, cars got bigger and heavier, it's literally that simple. A big, heavy car takes more power to move. The tech has come in terms of how much more performance we get, but there's still a wall on gas mileage. If you could produce a new car that weights 1900lbs, you'd still get around 50-60mpg.

I hardly ever see any of these cars on the road anymore ☹️. Other than maybe a first generation Saturn . But it’s usually not the sport coupe. I had a first generation Saturn (93) wagon . I bought from A guy I use to work with . He bought it from the original owner. The odometer stopped working at 147,000. Not long after he bought it. He used it as a commuter for three years. I bought it for the same purpose and drove it another 4 years . I put a cooling fan in , change the oil regularly and a set of tires. And that’s all I did . I sold it to a college kid. I original AC still worked . She drove it back and fourth from college. It finally just quit a few months back . I saw it on the side of the interstate. I knew it was mine by the bumper sticker. RIP

I looked at a Scoupe in 1993. On the plus side: I could afford to finance it for only 3 years. Negatives?: I didn’t know if it would last that long. Everything felt exceedingly cheap including the inside door pull. My wife owned both the Saturn SC2 coupe and NX2000. Both were great cars that I miss. I’d take either one right now for a daily driver.

Had a teal '91 Storm. I shut the hatch on my Dad's GF's head while she was seated in the back. Forgot to tell her to duck until the hatch was closed. And the car would turn 4300 RPM with it's 3 speed auto on the interstate with the AC on. Still liked the little bugger, though.

For years, I have been saying every car in its segment looks the same. It's interesting to see how every car here, save the Saturn coupe, looks similar - inside and out. When you look at the features, prices, etc., nothing has changed over the last 25 years in terms of how car makers offer their products.
