People forget Mitsubishi was paired up with dodge, once that partnership started they began sinking. Example: the 2000 eclipse. It was a clone of the 2dr status & Sebring models. That there, isn't a good sign

actually Mitsubishi tried cloning the Eclipse again with their 2016 Eclipse concept the thing basically looked like 2 door dodge Dart. I'm glad in a way the Eclipse brand is brand is defunct, the whole coupe market is a fad, i mean who wants to be driving around in a useless cramped up Go Cart just to get a little more house power.

These things were the SHIT back then, so sexy, everyone wanted one in my High School! How they absolutely fucked it up in the early 2000s with that god awful designed Eclipse is anyone's guess. I mean they fucked up so bad it basically killed the eclipse, no one even looks at Mitsubishi anymore, they had the Evo but fucked that up too by killing it. Mitsu might as well close its North American doors, nothing worth a flip anymore. The 90's had some of the best cars in the last few decades hands down! Loved those GSTs!

Wow. This is a real trip down memory lane for me. I bought a brand new racing green 1995 GSX. It was the first "new" car I ever bought. I LOVED that thing. In the mid-90s the Archer Brothers were racing these (the Talon, to be precise), but they were friend of mine and they hooked me up with suspension, bigger turbo, bigger rims, cold air intake, exhaust, the works. After the mods, it put out roughly 320hp, and it was the greatest sleeper car ever. In the winter, I mounted Blizzak tires and the damn thing was a snowmobile. I loved pulling out into the unplowed left lane to pass pickups, SUVs, snowplows, hell, anything! I miss that car!

Reliability is extremely varied. We've had some eclipses last years without issue, then we've had eclipses break every week. The deciding factor is modified versus stock. Stock (or at least minor mods) last so much longer, but they are all very old cars now and will have expected issues. Sorry I'm not much help.

The 90's had some of the best looking cars, and this was one of them. The smiley face grill still had a sense of aggressiveness to it and the 4G63 was/is so malleable in terms of modification. I think it could have been a better car outside of the engine had it not been paired with Chrysler. Those of you who owned a 2g DSM at one point remember the door handle snapping. the door key cylinder being pushed in, the rattling of the windows, strut tower rust, and the lower ball joint recall. A lot of those parts were shared with the Dodge Avenger/Chrysler 300 of that vintage. I loved mine when I had it, but it definitely was not a daily driver even in its stock form. It was more of a summer car, but I cannot complain as it held up on me in the two years I owned it.

Toyota made a turbo AWD car back then, and it was called the "Celica All Trac." They cost a lot more money than the Eclipse because they were built much better. As a result, few people bought them, and the car faded into obscurity.

I worked at the dealer during these years. The awd turbo manual trans is cool but the auto turbo awd really sucks... it's a tease. If you hold it in 2nd gear you can have a little fun around town but the fwd manual turbo is the best. I dislike fwd but it is so much faster feeling than the awd. My fav repair order back then was "customer states turbo is not working like it used to" So I got to go see what it would do. My feeling was the person got used to the power bc it was the best running one I had driven but I didn't make a habit out of running the piss out of customer cars. That one would break the tires every time the boost built in first gear and yeah the tires were good lol. My mentor took me for a ride in awd manual turbo tsi and turning right from a stop sign he dropped the clutch from redline 7k and it was really harsh but did break the tires loose... there was wheel hop and it was ridiculously hard on the car I'm sure... I didn't even like it or think it was cool. But that's what it would do lol He ended up smoking the syncro ring for 3rd in a 92? stealth rt tt powershifting 3rd and it ground... instead of letting off and putting it in 4th he forced it like 3 times and it never took 3rd again.

pbfloyd13 well you are (paraphrasing the Eclipse commercial), "very much mistaken," especially when Mitsu's sales have gone up nearly 25% in 2014, over the same period in 2013. The great recession is what essentially almost did Mitsu in despite the 4G Eclipse selling well prior, but they have since recovered from that. And, the all new 2016 Outlander is coming soon. As for your Mitsu dealer, it sounds to me like they need new marketing techniques, as the local Mitsu dealers we have in Houston sell like wildfire.

The comments are full of people lamenting the good 'ol days of 90s era Mitsus, how they were awesome, and how today the company sucks a bag of dicks. I would agree, but the fact is that we as auto enthusiasts make up a fraction of vehicle sales, so it's always a wise bet for companies to invest in cars that pander to the average driver. Reliable, fuel efficient transportation for the masses. That's why fun cars like these are out and why the Colt exists. Mitsubishi might not be the best company out there, but they're not stupid either. If they're entire line-up were Eclipses and Evos, they'd go bankrupt within a month. For the record, I drive an '07 Eclipse GT.
@LoyalmoonieProductions

my thoughts exactly. someday, mitsubishi will come out with a new Eclipse. for now, they need to continue rebuilding their sales in the US by selling cars that will sell well before they return to sports cars. I, too, wanted an Eclipse, but I'm perfectly fine with my 2014 Lancer ES.

I remember right around this time I "raced" a first gen Talon at a stoplight. It turned out to be a TSi (AWD turbo). I was ahead off the line but once he spooled up, damn he blew by me so fast. LOL These cars used to be everywhere. I wouldn't mind having one today, but I wouldn't want AWD, too much extra baggage that I don't need, don't want to deal with or worry about. FWD would be cool though.

I wonder what the elevation is where they test. There have also been instances where the test driver obviously wasn’t wringing the car out and these cars were hard to launch. My dad’s stock TSi hit 60 in under 6 secs according to my DashHawk.

Man what happened to the small, sporty, cheap, stylish 2 door Japanese coupe??? Seems like every manufacturer had at least a couple different "sport compact" cars back in the 90's. The 1st and 2nd gen Eclipse is one of my favorites(pre 2000 models), along with the 1992 Prelude, 1992 Civic coupe, 1994 Integra, 1990 Celica(love the pop up headlights and All-trac version). Nissan had some cool stuff in Japan that never made it here, the Silvia coupe with a turbo 4 cylinder was pretty hot stuff. Now days you have 2 to 4 cars in this segment, depending on how you define it. The Civic Coupe, Toyota GT-86, Subaru BR-Z, and maybe the Hyundia Veloster, IMO has the same soul as those old sport compacts even if the shape and door count are different.

@@conroypaw Was something like a when it was new $12,000, 100hp 1995 Honda Civic LX coupe really that expensive on insurance??? I know performance variants, like the V8 Camaros and Mustangs were stupid expensive to insure, but I doubt a base model Toyota Celica or Mazda MX-3 were any more expensive than other normal new cars back then.

The only complaint I have about any generation eclipse is that the paint fades and peels overtime. They were very rust prone as well depending on what region of the u.s people lived. Here in New England there are more rusted out ones
